Video Transcript for Peterson Square Trailer Tail Light Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Peterson stop turn and tail lights for trailer configurations. The left side, we're going to be using a 7-way, which will include the license plate light. That part number is 432400. For the right side, we'll be using the 6-way light, one that doesn't have that. This is part number 432200. You can see our light. Good, clean, sturdy looking light.

That large ring that helps to get that light out. Again, that reflective area around the outside there, and also here on the side. They don't take up a lot of space. Looks like we're going to be just at 3 inches, or just under from the face of our mounting position there to the very backside of the light. Keep that in mind in case you need those measurements. The lights will have a lens.

It's about 4 and a half inches tall by about 4 and a half inches wide. The center section, the circular part, that's going to be a pass-through lens. For when our trailer's just sitting there without light, we've got a reflective ring all the way around the outside so we don't have any wasted space. We come here to the side, we're going to have the same situation on our lens here. It's going to be about 2 and three-quarters by about 2 inches.

This is going to allow our running lights or our blinkers to pass through their really well, but still give us some reflective properties when our trailer's just sitting. If we look here on the backside, we've got our studs. These are going to be pretty standard space. They're going to be 2 inches on center here. That's the way most trailers are going to be configured. It's going to tell us here our tail light wire, just going to poke it in one of the two holes here.

Then, for stop and turn, we use one of the two holes here. The nuts themselves are going to have serrated lock washers attached to them, so we won't have to worry about washers and lock nuts. Just thread that right down on. This is actually going to create the ground, so we won't have to worry about an additional wire that could cause failure. Let's take the nuts off the back of our light for now. We need to get our wires. Now, our old light that we took off wasn't working. Actually, the colors on the wires we're appropriate. Yellow for the left side of the trailer here, and brown for our tail lights. Going to strip these back, and we really want to twist those up as solid as we can get them. The yellow wire acts as our turn signal, and also our brake signal. The brown wire acts as our tail light signal. Your wires might not correspond with that color, but they should have those signals. Really twist those up nice and solid, because the great thing about the light itself is it doesn't require the use of extra butt connectors or extra areas where we might ultimately have a source of failure. We've got the simple push-in connectors here on the back. They've got a weather resistant molded housing there. Just going to go in with our wires, slide them in. You can see now you can pull on them, and they're not going to be coming out of there. Just like that. Really easy, simple connection to make. Doesn't require any tools. You'll see there's a little pass way for those wires to tuck in, and right back into our original mounting location there. It's about as easy as it gets for installs. One socket, or one little wrench, and you'll have the job done. This is with the use of one socket or wrench, and a pair of wire strippers. You'll be able to change out your lights and have a good functioning equipment so you don't have any troubles heading down the highway. Now we can just head over to the right side of the trailer, do the same thing there. Then, we'll test them out. Now, let's test it out and make sure everything's working. Start with our blinkers, and brakes, and our running lights. With everything working properly, that completes our installation of the Peterson square trailer tail stop and turn signal. For the left hand side, part number 432400 and for the right, part number 432200.

Looks good although right around the edges of the lens there are tiny gaps, which I would think will let water in (and out). Haven't installed it yet but with the easy to use wiring connections, no soldering! 355993

Still doing good. Sealed up the gaps and havent had any problems.

After about 10 months on my little home-built trailer (using it maybe once a month for a few hours), the side reflector piece just fell off somewhere on the road. Now I have to order a new tail light. sigh. A DIFFERENT brand. 573539

I purchased these lights as replacements for my utility trailer. As with most trailers of this type, grounding is usually a problem for one reason or another. These lights should solve any grounding problems because they eliminate the grounding wire and are grounded directly to the trailer frame using the mounting bolts. Maintenance will easy, as well.....the lenses and bulbs can be replaced simply by removing 4 screws. I'll admit, I'm a little skeptical of the way the wiring to the lights are attached.....bare the wire and insert it into a hole in the back of the light where they are anchored by an onboard clip. If this works as described, that will make these lights the go-to replacements. As easy as it gets. 574032

As always, etrailer.com had lots of parts to choose from and shipped very quickly. I was able to order a part that is identical to the original. It fit and works perfectly. A little mishap with a trailer light is now forgotten like it never happened! 433956

I ordered 2 Peterson tail lights to replace the broken ones on my Kendon stand-up M/C trailer. They were exact replacements and the job was over in twenty minutes. Very easy. That was only the product. What was really exceptional was the service. When I placed the order I was expecting a two week or longer turn around as so many other online dealers take, but e=trailer shipped my order immediately and I had them on the fourth day. What great service!!!I would highly recommend this company for any of the products they sell. Thanks 207098

I replaced both lights on my small boat trailer. I had never seen this type of electrical contact before but the wires were still attached to the existing Peterson light so I copied that connection, which was very easy. I would suggest that Peterson include a simple diagram with its trailer light for those of us unfamiliar with that connection. They appear to be durable high-quality products with a reasonable price. 179118

As always, I very satisfied with my purchase from, etrailer. I have bought from them before and always get great service and products. Of course Ole George, keeps me up to date on my items and information about shipping, and even lets me know when it is delivered. I think he has a spy cam somewhere so he can watch over the items. Not sure how he does it. etrailer has to be a family owned business, as they care for the customer like family. Many thanks to all the etrailer employees for making my purchases a great experience! P S They didn't pay me to write this. 473469

I have used Peterson lights for many decades. I stick with them because they maintain a decent quality level. But, I ordered a driver side light and a passenger side light about two weeks apart in two separate orders. On both lights, 1 or both of the threads on the 1/4" X 20 mounting bolts were damaged right on the end of the bolt. This made starting the hex nut impossible. I happened to have a thread file which allowed me to clean the threads up and solve the problem. It just seemed odd to me that this issue occurred. I gave them a 5 star rating anyway because I know Peterson builds a good product and I have used these particular lights for many years without issue. 649424

Don’t much care for the way Peterson has engineered the retainers that capture the push-in wire connection on this latest production. I had to tin the leads to get a good connection thru the stiff metal. That was never a problem before. 550278

I installed the units within 30 days of receiving them and once of the units when out about 4 months ago. I thought about contacting you to complain or check warranty but never did. Thanks for your follow up as it gave me the chance to bring you up to date. If you wish to replace the one that failed I would be most pleased. Thanks 549261

Its pretty rare for a taillight to go bad within 2 months of installation. Id recommend doing a little troubleshooting. Use a circuit tester like # 40376
Circuit Tester Kit
$51.70
on the wires leading to the lamp as each lighting function is activated. If you dont have a circuit tester, you can always swap the non-functioning lamp to the other side of the trailer. If the lamp works on the other side, then its a wiring issue, not a defective lamp. Its also possible that the bulb is bad. This lamp uses a readily available 1157 bulb, which we offer as part # A1157B
Replacement Light Bulb # 1157
$1.24
. If its not a wiring issue, then the lamp is defective.

Do you have a question about this Trailer Light?

  • Troubleshooting Peterson Tail Lights on Boat Trailer That Keep Burning Out
  • It really all depends on what trailer light kit you have installed on your boat trailer. Some kits are designed to withstand submersion and other kits aren't. If you can let me know what kit is on your trailer (not just the type of bulbs you use) I can help you determine if it is submersible (granted we carry it). Another thing to note is that you need to make sure your trailer wiring is unplugged before backing the trailer into the water. Even if your lights are submersible, if you...

  • How To Install The Peterson Square Trailer Tail Light Part # 432400
  • I am assuming you are referring to the Peterson Square Trailer Tail Light part # 432400. If this is the case, on the back of the taillight assembly, there are 4 wire holes for each function located at the top of the tail light assembly. The top two holes are designed for a larger gauge wire whereas the bottom two are designed for a smaller gauge wire. In order to remove the old wires, you will first need to unhook the trailer connector from the vehicle. You can then insert a small screwdriver...

It is a replacement lens for Peterson Square Trailer Tail Light Right Hand, # 432200, and the Peterson Square Trailer Tail Light Left Hand, # 432400. The taillights do come with bulbs.

  • Replacement Light For Peterson 440 151 Trailer Light
  • The replacement lens for the 440-151 light you have is not a lens we carry. You may want to consider a replacement light. You would need part # 432200 for the right side or part # 432400 for the left side. The cost for these is not much more than a replacement lens. The Peterson 440 series lights now have screws for the lens so it looks like they have changed the design of the lights.

  • How Does Wiring Run to the Peterson Trailer Light part # 432400
  • Essentially what you said is how you run wire to the part # 432400. It's a pretty strange method I will agree, but basically you just insert the wires into the holes on the back of the light assemblies and they socket grabs the wire. If you fast-forward to the 2:30 section of the video I attached you will see our installer use this method. It's really pretty nice since you don't have to splice anything or use any soldering. If you do pull hard enough you would be able to remove the wire,...

  • Choosing and Installing a Replacement Peterson 7-Function Square Trailer Tail Light
  • The Peterson 7-Function Square Trailer Tail Light # 432400 shown in the linked photo uses press-to-release wire connectors. The arrows in the photo show the lower row of holes that need to be pressed with a pin, nail or similar item to release the wires from the upper holes. If the old light is badly corroded or if the release points do not work you can simply snip off the wires with wire cutters as close as possible to the light's housing in order to keep as much as possible of the trailer...

  • Installation of Peterson Replacement Lens # 55-15R
  • The Peterson Side Marker Replacement Lens # 55-15R that you referenced does install differently than the original part did. (The original lens had the tabs you refer to; this replacement does not.) The screw holes required for mounting this lens are beneath the original tail light side marker lens. This lens fits Peterson lights # 432200 and # 432400.

  • What Side Marker Replacement Lens Fits the Peterson Square Trailer Tail Light # 432400
  • I spoke with my contact at Peterson and the correct replacement lens for the Peterson Square Tail Light is the Peterson Replacement Side Marker # 55-15R. In the manufacturing process, when the lights are being assembled, the side lights are snapped in via machinery, however, when they need to be replaced, they do need to be screwed into place. There are actual entry points for the screws under the lens that you will see when you pop it out. Peterson does not make a snap-in replacement...
