Video Transcript for Peterson Square Trailer Tail Light Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Peterson stop turn and tail lights for trailer configurations. The left side, we're going to be using a 7-way, which will include the license plate light. That part number is 432400. For the right side, we'll be using the 6-way light, one that doesn't have that. This is part number 432200. You can see our light. Good, clean, sturdy looking light.

That large ring that helps to get that light out. Again, that reflective area around the outside there, and also here on the side. They don't take up a lot of space. Looks like we're going to be just at 3 inches, or just under from the face of our mounting position there to the very backside of the light. Keep that in mind in case you need those measurements. The lights will have a lens.

It's about 4 and a half inches tall by about 4 and a half inches wide. The center section, the circular part, that's going to be a pass-through lens. For when our trailer's just sitting there without light, we've got a reflective ring all the way around the outside so we don't have any wasted space. We come here to the side, we're going to have the same situation on our lens here. It's going to be about 2 and three-quarters by about 2 inches.

This is going to allow our running lights or our blinkers to pass through their really well, but still give us some reflective properties when our trailer's just sitting. If we look here on the backside, we've got our studs. These are going to be pretty standard space. They're going to be 2 inches on center here. That's the way most trailers are going to be configured. It's going to tell us here our tail light wire, just going to poke it in one of the two holes here.

Then, for stop and turn, we use one of the two holes here. The nuts themselves are going to have serrated lock washers attached to them, so we won't have to worry about washers and lock nuts. Just thread that right down on. This is actually going to create the ground, so we won't have to worry about an additional wire that could cause failure. Let's take the nuts off the back of our light for now. We need to get our wires. Now, our old light that we took off wasn't working. Actually, the colors on the wires we're appropriate. Yellow for the left side of the trailer here, and brown for our tail lights. Going to strip these back, and we really want to twist those up as solid as we can get them. The yellow wire acts as our turn signal, and also our brake signal. The brown wire acts as our tail light signal. Your wires might not correspond with that color, but they should have those signals. Really twist those up nice and solid, because the great thing about the light itself is it doesn't require the use of extra butt connectors or extra areas where we might ultimately have a source of failure. We've got the simple push-in connectors here on the back. They've got a weather resistant molded housing there. Just going to go in with our wires, slide them in. You can see now you can pull on them, and they're not going to be coming out of there. Just like that. Really easy, simple connection to make. Doesn't require any tools. You'll see there's a little pass way for those wires to tuck in, and right back into our original mounting location there. It's about as easy as it gets for installs. One socket, or one little wrench, and you'll have the job done. This is with the use of one socket or wrench, and a pair of wire strippers. You'll be able to change out your lights and have a good functioning equipment so you don't have any troubles heading down the highway. Now we can just head over to the right side of the trailer, do the same thing there. Then, we'll test them out. Now, let's test it out and make sure everything's working. Start with our blinkers, and brakes, and our running lights. With everything working properly, that completes our installation of the Peterson square trailer tail stop and turn signal. For the left hand side, part number 432400 and for the right, part number 432200.

This trailer tail light is designed to install with the trailer light wiring routed directly into the back of the light. I have attached a review video that shows that wire installation around the 3 minute mark.

I have used Peterson lights for many decades. I stick with them because they maintain a decent quality level. But, I ordered a driver side light and a passenger side light about two weeks apart in two separate orders. On both lights, 1 or both of the threads on the 1/4" X 20 mounting bolts were damaged right on the end of the bolt. This made starting the hex nut impossible. I happened to have a thread file which allowed me to clean the threads up and solve the problem. It just seemed odd to me that this issue occurred. I gave them a 5 star rating anyway because I know Peterson builds a good product and I have used these particular lights for many years without issue. 649424

Ask the Experts about this Peterson Trailer Lights

  • Single Wire ID Light Bar for a Boat Trailer Over 80 Inches Wide
Your old ID bar must have grounded through its mounting hardware since it only had the one wire. ID bar # MCL97RB also has just one wire and grounds through the mounting hardware. This is an LED light so it will draw much less power than incandescent lights. If your boat trailer is aluminum though a jumper ground wire should be attached between the frame and mounting hardware and attached to a steel surface or the main trailer connector ground. A ground issue is why the other light was...

  • How To Install The Peterson Square Trailer Tail Light Part # 432400
I am assuming you are referring to the Peterson Square Trailer Tail Light part # 432400. If this is the case, on the back of the taillight assembly, there are 4 wire holes for each function located at the top of the tail light assembly. The top two holes are designed for a larger gauge wire whereas the bottom two are designed for a smaller gauge wire. In order to remove the old wires, you will first need to unhook the trailer connector from the vehicle. You can then insert a small screwdriver...

  • Replacing Bulb on Peterson Square Trailer Tail Light # 432400
To change the bulbs in Peterson trailer tail light # 432400 you will first remove the main lens which is held on by 4 screws. The main bulb can be removed by pushing down and rotating the bulb counterclockwise. There is a diagram on the inside of the case that explains this and it says turn it 30 degrees then pull up. I had to turn it several more times when I played with the light so it probably varies slightly. To install a new 1157 bulb # 30-90-157 you will line up the lower nub...

  • How Does Wiring Run to the Peterson Trailer Light part # 432400
Essentially what you said is how you run wire to the part # 432400. It's a pretty strange method I will agree, but basically you just insert the wires into the holes on the back of the light assemblies and they socket grabs the wire. If you fast-forward to the 2:30 section of the video I attached you will see our installer use this method. It's really pretty nice since you don't have to splice anything or use any soldering. If you do pull hard enough you would be able to remove the wire,...

  • How to Wire a Trailer Light with 1 Wire
It sounds like the light on your trailer is either missing a wire or it was only designated for one tail light function. If the light does not look old or damaged, I would guess that it is just a clearance light and should be connected to the running light circuit. If this is the case, it should not function as a brake light as well because it was not designed to do so. The brake lights and tail lights run on different circuits and they were not designed to connect to the same wire on a...
