Sealed, Waterproof Trailer Light

The waterproof construction of this light makes it ideal for use on trailers that may be submerged, like a boat trailer. The circuit board is sealed, which means that water will not damage the diodes or circuit board.

Combination Lights for Trailers Over 80" Wide

Flatbed trailer over 80" wide with combination tail lights

If a trailer is 80" or wider at its widest point, then it requires rear clearance lights in addition to basic trailer lights. These clearance lights indicate the width of the trailer when it is viewed from the back.

To meet these requirements on a flatbed utility trailer where the bed extends past the wheels, you can install combination trailer lights that include the rear clearance function. For proper mounting, the lights must be installed at the widest points on the rear of the trailer - one on each corner.

Surface-Mount Light

Surface Mount Trailer Light Installation Diagram

Surface-mount trailer lights install using a flange or bracket with mounting holes. These lights lay flat against the trailer surface and only require a small, often pre-existing hole, for wiring. Mounting hardware is used to secure the light to the trailer.

Video Transcript for Peterson LED Light Kit Review

Jake: Hey guys. This is Jake here at etrailer. We're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install, the Peterson LED Tail Light Kit for trailers over 80" wide. Now, these new LED tail lights are going to be a good replacement for your incandescent factory lights that might come on your trailer. They're also going to be great for those boat trailers because they are fully submergible so they're going to do well in those heavy water situations. Now, you're kit is going to come included with a full set of wiring in order to wire your whole trailer up, and this license plate holder in case your old one might be broken or brittle. So the LED lights that make up this tail light are going to be brighter, and draw less power from your system. They are also going to last 50 times longer than the standard incandescent bulbs. The dimensions of this light are going to be 5-3/8" long, 4-5/8" tall and 1-13/16th deep. Now the durable service mount technology in the LED circuit board is going to withstand those shocks and sharp jarring of the trailer. The included wiring harness is going to be 25 feet long. It does include a four pull connection so if you need a longer one or a different configuration just check etrailer.com.So here you can see we have our old incandescent lights.

We're going to go ahead and replace them with these LED tail lights. Let's go ahead and get started. So we'll start by removing the nuts off the back side. As you see see we went ahead and clipped our wires. So we can set that light aside. Now we're going to want to take our new wires, and there should be a little diagram on the back here that'll tell you which one is the ground, the tail light, and the stop and turn. So, on our old light you can see that we also have a diagram labeling which wire goes where.

In the case of our trailer here we are going to have a jumper wire, which is going to be our brown wire, which is actually going to go from our tail light over to our three lights underneath signifying that our trailer is over 80" wide. So we'll have to take that brown wire and wire it in with our tail lights as it was before. So before wiring everything up you want to make sure that your bolt pattern is the same as on your trailer. So you can see that it does fit there but because of how wide our bracket is here we're going to want to get this side marker out a little bit further. So we're going to have to drill two new holes so that the light will sit like that.So as you can see we got our two new holes here. Line our bolts up, see if it fits.

Just like that. As you can see we did bring that light out a little bit more towards the edge. But it's still protected by this housing. Then you'll take your wires and feed them through. Just the black and red, though. Then we're going to take our ground wire and put it through the old bolt hole, and around on the other side.

Then we can slide our light up into place. Then we'll take your two included nuts, thread them on. Then we'll just tighten them down.Once we have one of our included nuts threaded on we're going to take our brain terminal for our ground, slide it over that. Then we can thread on our other nut. That's going to ensure a nice tight ground against that housing there.Remember not to tighten down too much because it is a plastic light on the other side so you don't want to break it.So now we're going to take our red wire and our green wire, place our butt connector on. Now we are using heat shrink butt connectors just to give that little extra protection from any rain or any elements that might get on your terminals. Then we'll take our green wire, put it in the butt connector, crimp it down. Now we're going to take our tail light wire and our jumper wire, connect it to the tail light wire from our new light. So now we'll go ahead and test our lights before we get everything wrapped up. Here's our tail lights. Our brake lights, and our turn signal. Now that we've made sure that our light works just take a heat torch, and melt that heat shrink down so our wires are safe from corrosion and any water damage. You do want to be careful not to get the wires too hot, you just want to melt the heat shrink not the wire. Now that you got everything buttoned up go ahead and tuck the wires up into your trailer. You can even throw a few zip ties on there. We got a place where we can stick them up in the frame. Now we got all that done, we'll go ahead and repeat the same process for the other side.So that's going to do it for our look at the Peterson LED Tail Light.

Since I just installed the lights yesterday, I can’t vouch for the longevity of the product, only time will tell. What I can say is that these PM lights looked and felt like high quality lights one would use in a commercial application. The lights had a little weight to them and utilized brass nuts and bolts, an excellent choice for boat trailers. The kit even came with four heat shrink electrical connections. I easily installed the lights and they look great!! Will shop at etrailer again.

Very good product. I replaced the original junk lights and associated wiring on my utility trailer with these. I didn't use the license plate holder as it mounted the plate too close to the ground. The lights continue to work perfectly after many miles on rough roads, rain and snow.

Ask the Experts about this Peterson Trailer Lights

  • Trailer Light Kit with Large Gauge Wire
Both the pigtail and the trailer harness included with the Peterson # V944 LED Taillight Kit are 18 gauge, which is typical for trailer lamps and wiring harnesses. 18 gauge wire is actually perfectly sufficient for the reduced power draw of LED lamps so a kit like this should work perfectly for you. 18 gauge wire is the industry standard for these kits, and our suppliers don't offer anything using larger gauge wire. I've linked to a product demonstration video for the Peterson # V944...

  • How To Ground Trailer Tail Lights Without a Ground Wire To a Wooden Surface
The Standard Trailer Light Kit with 25' Wire Harness part # TL29BK as I am sure you noticed grounds via the mounting hardware therefore there is not a singular ground wire. In order to attach this light to a wooden surface you will need to run a ground wire yourself up to the trailer tongue using the mounting studs on the back with ring terminals part # DW05705-1 and wire part # 12-1-1. The other option you have is to use the Peterson LED Light Kit for Trailers part # V944 which does...

  • LED Replacement Lights for Peterson M444
We do have a couple of really good options for you to replace your Peterson # # PM444L and # PM444, but you do have a keen eye because the Tail Light Kit # TLL16RK will not work with the 2-1/4" spacing you have. One of the lights would interfere because it is too long overall and the back of the light cannot be rotated. Instead, for a couple of similar options that have 2" on center spacing and the needed space for you to mount them I recommend checking out the LED Combination Tail Light...

  • Parts Needed Electric Drum Brakes To 1996 Car Hauler With Tandem Axles
I would be happy to recommend everything you will need to add electric trailer brakes and new taillights to your 1996 Tandem axle car trailer, but you will need to verify a few aspects of your trailer first. First things first you will want to make sure your axles currently have a brake mounting flange. This is located right behind the hub and will have 4 or 5 holes depending on the axle rating of your axles. If you do not have a brake mounting flange you will need to have one added...
