How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Working smoothly and the added grease fitting was great addition!

by:

This is an excellent jack the only problem I had is finding it, these are put on Lund boat trailers and the mount is welded on to the trailer. Fulton changed the name of the jack from a magnum series to fxp15w

Heavy duty unit.

Jack fit the welded base fine. Just a minor adjustment to the hole size and alignment was required. Item was shipped promptly and arrived in good condition. The new jack has a grease fitting however no instructions were provided on how much grease to use or how often it would require grease.

According to my contacts at Fulton the FXP15W should be greased once a year. The grease fitting serves the gears for the handle of this jack only. This information can be found in the maintenance section of the instructions.

Perfect fit... Works flawless. So happy with purchase... Thanks for your help

by:

Your web site was easy to navigate, the product I needed was right in front of me. It was delivered when I expected it, it was exactly what I ordered. It fit to perfection and I am very very happy! I will order from you in the future for sure!

by:

Easy install, and works great. This jack was a direct replacement for the one that was factory installed on my boat trailer and I should have replaced it years ago. The original jack had become difficult to crank due to rust on the jack screw and finally it stripped out to the point that it would no longer lift the tongue off the ball of the truck hitch. Literally a 10 minute replacement and now everything moves smoothly on and off the hitch. Well worth the investment in my case.

by:

Delivery was really fast.

Excellent customer service, got product the very next day!!!

by:

A great replacement for my old Fulton Magnum 1500 jack. Bolted right on my welded plate, operates smoothly, and gives me more vertical lift to clear the hitch ball. I bought from etrailer because they published good information about what I should buy to replace the old jack.

by:

Etrailer had exactly what I needed. The Jack I needed to replace and been replaced with a new model, and they called the manufacturer to make sure I got the right thing. Great service.

by:

A great replacement for my Fulton Magnum trailer jack. Has a grease zerk for the gears and a beefier wheel. One nut to remove and replace the jack using my existing bracket.

by:

We love this company! We have used it twice and they process the order quickly and the product arrived a day early this time. We purchased this trailer jack to replace the previous one that fell apart on the extremely rough highway from West Virginia to Central PA.
My husband has called in the past for help and gets a live person who is very helpful.
Wonderful of them to follow up after the product is delivered as well. Thank you so much it seems it is harder and harder to find a company that cares.

by:

My old part was worn out and felt a new versus rebuilt was the way to go. This bolted on in a few minutes and worked perfectly on my boat trailer. Much easier and not that much more expensive than rebuilding the old one. Has been in service for a year and a half with it operating flawlessly when used.

by:

I am very happy with my new Fulton Bolt-thru Swivel Marine Jack. The trailer I have had one on it and it was abused. This was an extremely easy installation and it works great. etrailer.com web site was extremely easy to use and made my purchase even better. Thank you

by:

Just wanted to thank Bob Gisi at etrailer in Wentzville for the great help and fast service. Got my 1500# Fulton trailer jack the next day, Fit perfect and installed with ease. Thanks Bob, you treat me like family ! I will ordering again soon.

by:

I wasn't certain if this was the jack I needed. I spoke to a customer service rep from etrailer and they assured me it was. It arrived quickly, attached quickly, works perfectly.

by:

My experience was great from start to finish. Product is well built and is exactly what I ordered. I would recommend dealing with Etrailer for any of your trailer needs. I'm an actual customer that is pleased with the service I received.

Thanks,

Fit perfectly as a replacement for the original jack. Easy to install only had to take off the large retaining nut. Wheel is much larger than the old one which makes it perfect moving around a little when needed. Very happy with this purchase.

Still looks like new. Works great have no issues with it at all.

Although sending a brand new product, I'm still amazed at ETrailer and their wonderful attitude. I drove all day looking for a part, never found it, spent 5 minutes browsing their site, and in 10 was waiting for it to arrive on my doorstep. I was contacted 3 times to notify me not only of my placement of the order, but that the order was packaged, and that they would be upgrading my shipping for free since I was a first time customer, THANK YOU ETRAILER.COM

by:

Appears to be well-constructed. Entire change out with the existing jack was about 5 minutes. I really like the larger wheel and ease of cranking. We'll see how it performs after a few trips to the bay...

  • What is the Measurement of Fulton Marine Jack from the Floor to the Bottom of the Bracket?
I think you are on the right track. The Fulton Bolt-Thru Swivel Marine Jack you mentioned, part # F1411300301, is rated at 1500 lb. With the jack fully retracted, the distance from the bottom of the mounting bracket to the floor is 12.5". I think that part # FXP15W is the one you are looking for. It measures 11" from the floor to the bottom of the mounting bracket. On our website, we provide the bracket height for most jacks by measuring from the floor to the center of the bracket instead...
