How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Dutton-Lainson Trailer Jack - Side Frame Mount Jack - DL22686 Review

Presenter: Today we're taking a look at a trailer jack. Now this jack mounts to your trailer frame. It offers a 2,000 pound capacity and allows you to easily raise and lower your trailer. Again, it mounts to the side of your trailer tongue, and comes with the weld on bracket and the snap ring. So both of those items are included. This bracket right here, I did take a measurement from edge to edge, and got a measurement of about four and a half inches wide.

But once installed, you can actually swivel the jack up and out of the way along the trailer frame for travel, and then swing it back down when you're ready to use it. When you're ready to do that, all you have to do is pull the pin right here, and then that basically allows the jack and the plate to swivel apart from one another. So you pull this, and then you can rotate the jack up for storage, because the plate's gonna be welded to the trailer. So that's gonna be stationary or permanent. So you pull this, rotate the jack up.

It'll lock into place in the stowed position. Pull it again to rotate the jack back down into the usable position. So the pull pin, it's nice. It's easy to use. Spring loaded design makes it very comfortable and easy to operate. The unit is made from a durable steel construction with powder coat finishing to resist rust and corrosion.

The front plate is welded onto the bottom on the inner tube. And the front plate does a great job at spreading out the applied weight, especially on softer surfaces, to prevent sinking. This front plate measures seven inches long by four inches wide. The side wind handle is comfortable. It's easy to use.

It's easy to operate. We got nice consistent up and down movement from this jack. I don't feel any kinking or binding internally. The hand grip does rotate all the way. So it allows for really nice comfortable grip when you grab onto it.Maintenance is also easy with this jack. Located right here, you have a built in greaser. So that allows you to just attach a grease gun, pump in the grease. And that's gonna allow you to lubricate the internal components.A few measurements I wanna mention for you real quick. I did take a measurement of the overall height in the fully retracted position. So from the ground to the top of the jack is 18 inches tall. From the ground to the center of the bracket measure 11 and a half inches with it in the fully retracted position. So we can put a ruler up to that and you can see where we get that 11 and a half inch measurement from, right there at the center of the bracket. With it fully extended, that measurement increases to 21 and a half inches. So this jack gives us a lift or travel measurement of 10 inches. Again, it has a 2000 pound capacity, and this jack is made in the U.S.A.That's gonna do it for today's look a the 2000 pound trailer jack.

by:

This product met all of my expectations

FYI: Received the jack and mounted it using the existing hardware. When I went to lock the jack  I discovered that the locking pin on the 1500 dual wheel jack is 1/2 inch and the pin from the old 1000 winch is much smaller. Now I have to disassemble and make the holes bigger to accept the pin. It would have been helpful if that was pointed out. Hoping the holes line up.

The overall build appears hefty.Tilt works well and stays at 90 degrees when supporting 3 snowmobiles on my dual axle trailer. My 13 year old granddaughter can one hand the crank when raising the trailer with the Jack. Not sure how well the double wheels will work when pushing the trailer in the garage to store but so far no problems. One upgrade they could do is us a better quality handle on the crank. This Jack came assembled!!Handle and wheels on.Quick install!!!

The jack works well, mounted to my trailer without issues. But on the second trip with the trailer, the cap on top fell off. I have had a difficult time finding a replacement cap and have defaulted to duct tape.

Purchased to replace the broken jack on a 1997 Coleman Destiny Taos pop-up I am rebuilding. I chose to use this bolt on on the opposite side of the original welded jack so I can convert the old jack into a swinging standing foot, or replace it later with an auxiliary weld o jack. Extremely easy installation for this jack. The method of attachment allows me to move the jack forward or backward on the tongue as I see fit. Crank is smooth and easy. Spring-loaded pullout bolt allows for very easy swivel. The original jack had a single wheel and was for a tongue weight of #500, while this new jack has a double wheel and allows for a tongue weight of #1500. As a result, moving the trailer by hand is like pushing butter. As always, the folks at etrailer did a great job of providing information, photos, and videos, to allow me to make the proper choice of item, and they did a great job in contacting me and shipping this to me.

I ordered a dual wheel 1,500 jack and received a single wheel 1,000# jack. When I notified etrailer, they made me feel like it was my fault, they didn't have mine in stock....went to Northern Tool and purchased what I needed. Still have not received my refund :-(

by:

The jack broke on our bear pontoon trailer. Tried looking number up on broken jack and couldn't find anything number wise to match. Called e trailer and asked them if they could cross reference the number somehow. And found a match that was verified by the manufacturer. Thanks for making it easy.

by:

I ordered this to replace the jack on my 16 year old trailer. I did not use the weld on bracket because it was an exact fit. The jack is very easy to raise and lower. I like how the handle folds closed and has a friction lock to hold in folded position. The BEST Part is MADE IN USA.

by:

Sturdy and well-made, easy to bolt on, made in the USA.

by:

2nd jack, handle breaks within 2 months, don't waste your time. Go Fulton.

by:

My new Dutton-Lainson Tongue Jack from erailer has eliminated the potential problem of receiving an unwanted tailgate ding. This unit is heavy duty with a 1,000 pound tongue rating - not some $35 throw-away unit that you usually get from Big Box stores.
Installation on my new Karavan Utility Trailer was easy enough, taking no more than 30 minutes, and that's without even reading the installation instructions!
The D-L tongue jack provides trailer tongue quick drop, as well as high quality worm gear internals.
Thanks etrailer! Satisfied Customer

by:

awesome service, speedy delivery!!
Thank
you!

by:

Great service and kept me up to date on the status of my owder

by:

Fits as needed
My old single wheel jack
was not enough
I have a sand car in the trailer it needed to be well made. It is. Time will be the true test.

by:

Great product. Stronger and better made than the jack that came with my Mew trailer.

by:

Very happy with quality of the product. Would highly recommend this product. Made better than the original that came on my trailer
. Made in USA

by:

The double wheel design is much more stable than the original single wheel we had on the boat trailer. Very easy to use great quality!

by:

First of all, despite the typical delays we're all experiencing these days the people at Etrailer sent updates. Communication is a good thing! I installed the jack on my Shorelander trailer and had to drill out the holes for the lock pin to accomodate the larger diameter pin as I had to use the factory mount on the trailer. Other than that, it mounted nicely and sure makes it easy to move the boat around. Well built jack, no more creaking and flexing!

by:

Fit is good on my trailer. Wish the install diagram was a little clearer

by:

This was the specified swivel jack for my Aluma MC10 motorcycle trailer. It was spec'd by the manufacturer, by etrailer, I ordered it, it arrived and...no way it's going to fit my trailer! The jack is much longer than the tongue/hitch. So, after everyone's recommendations I have to send it back and I'm out $18 or so in freight. You decide how many stars. The service was expedient but why is it costing me $$$ for their errors?

by:

Amazing service! and great people to work with!
