How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Review of Dutton-Lainson Trailer Jack - Pull Pin Easy Swivel Trailer Jack - DL22683

Hi, everyone, Steven here with etrailer.com. Today, we're looking at this pull pin, easy-swivel trailer jack with foot plate. It's a topwind-style jack with 15 inches of travel, and it's rated at 2,000 pounds capacity. So folks, again, a topwind jack, meaning the handle is on top, and this is topwound to go up or down. And the handle here, very ergonomic, it's got grooves in it to match your fingers. And it'll spin freely while you're spinning to crank it up or down.

Now, as I said earlier, it has a nice foot plate on it. The total travel is 15 inches of lift, it's rated at 2,000 pounds capacity. The overall height, so from the base to the top here is right at about 26 1/2, as far as the top piece here to the ground. And this is fully retracted, it can't go down anymore. And if I want another measurement, to the handle top, it's right about 30 from the top of the handle down.

Now, as far as from the top of this bracket to the ground, I'm right at 17 inches. From the bottom of the bracket to the ground, I'm right at about 12 1/4 inches. So that gives you some different measurements there on where this is gonna be mounting. Now, this is your weld-on bracket. It has an included snap ring back here that's already installed.

So if you're not familiar, basically, you would take this off, weld it in place on the trailer frame. And then when you pull this pin, when it's time to deploy the jack, that part would stay steady and the jack would spin. So that would be steady, the jack would spin up out of the way before moving on with your trailer camper or whatnot. So very simple design, simple concept. It's got a nice black powder coat finish with some texture on it.

I like the finish, looks pretty beefy. Again, the pull pin here is spring loaded, making it real easy to deploy the jack when need be. Well, folks, that's gonna wrap it up. I wanna thank you for your time together today with me while we take a look at this jack. I'm Steven, have a good one.

I bought a used generator trailer with 3 seized stabilizer jacks. etrailer had the dimensions on their jacks so I could find replacements, and by far the best price. The jacks came today. They are well made and a perfect fit. I'm going to grease the heck out of them so they don't seize like the last ones. They don't have zerks so I'll use motorcycle chain lube. Penetrates and protects.

I purchased the Trailer Jack (1500 Lb) as a replacement for the one on my 2005 boat trailer (800 Lb). I just finished a simulated extension to make sure of the length. ALL went well and I am glad the conversation with salesperson was done. He knew the products. I like my new Jack. Will install when cooler, 89 Deg now. Semper Fi

This is the 2nd one I bought. The 1st was from Amazon. It was obviously a previous return. It had scratches on it and small pinhead size rust
marks all over. This one had a couple small scratches and some type of
marks on the shaft. They will probably buff out. The plastic cap at the top was also damaged, but still serves the purpose. I needed a jack that had extra lift and there aren't as many of these, so I decided I'm just going to keep this one. Also, there's no grease fitting and I fail to understand why any manufacturer wouldn't put one on. A lot of the damage problem could be easily solved with better packaging. The metal mounting parts are in a plastic bag and allowed to just flop around inside the box. I just got the jack today, so it's obviously not mounted and I can't give you a review on operation. I suspect it will be okay.

Well, it hasn’t completely failed after one year, but it is getting hard to crank and has no grease fittings. I have a venture trailer, used the OEM jack for at least 5 years, that failed (became impossible to crank, grease didn’t help) so I replaced it with an Amazon Fulton jack that failed after about a year, replaced that with a West Marine jack that also only lasted a year. OK, I conclude I’m getting Chinese junk with American brand names. So I find this Dutton - Lainsin jack claiming made in USA.for 100 years etc. And it has a multi Year warranty. So I bought it last year. Not looking promising. I’m not immersing these in salt water or anything, what gives? It’s like the new Whirlpool refrigerator I bought that had two service calls in the first year! Have manufacturers forgotten how to build quality products? Or is it a better business model to sell cheap junk? Frustrating!!

Jack was shipped in manufacturer's box, which in my case was sturdy enough for the box and all contents to arrive in good shape. Jack itself appears well made and operates smoothly. (Can't comment on how corrosion resistant it will be, so 4 stars only for now. My last jack from a different mfr. allegedly similarly zinc-plated off-shore only lasted 15 mos. in fresh water usage.) Install instructions don't provide any torque loads for the bolt-on mount. There appeared to be adequate grease already on the gears. There is no grease fitting, but the top cap is easy enough to remove gently. Attached photo shows 1/4" aluminum sheet shims I used (on top & bottom of 3"W x 4.5"H trailer I-beam frame) so that 5" spacing holes on mount can be used.

I ordered this to replace the jack on my 16 year old trailer. I did not use the weld on bracket because it was an exact fit. The jack is very easy to raise and lower. I like how the handle folds closed and has a friction lock to hold in folded position. The BEST Part is MADE IN USA.

by:

Just what I was looking for!! Well built the quality is excellent, the install is simple and having dual wheels makes moving my trailer around the barn is a breeze. The shipping was speedy as well. Highly recommended! A great company to deal with.

by:

Great jack, smooth easy crank. It's installed on my 24ft boat trailer. Only sees salter water and no rust yet.

by:

This double wheel jack was the only one i could find that would replace the jack on my Ranger Bass Boat, The Ranger has a welded swivel mount and with somecareful thought it is a relacement for that jack using thr welded portion of the original.

by:

Good tongue jack for the money but nothing is built with the good old USA pride and quality that it used to be. etrailer team was spot on. Ordering was easy and got my order out right away.

by:

Just what the doctor ordered! Shipment arrived a day early and shipment notifications were top notch. Item was as advertised and an exact fit. Thank you etrailer.

by:

FYI: Received the jack and mounted it using the existing hardware. When I went to lock the jack  I discovered that the locking pin on the 1500 dual wheel jack is 1/2 inch and the pin from the old 1000 winch is much smaller. Now I have to disassemble and make the holes bigger to accept the pin. It would have been helpful if that was pointed out. Hoping the holes line up.

Purchased to replace the broken jack on a 1997 Coleman Destiny Taos pop-up I am rebuilding. I chose to use this bolt on on the opposite side of the original welded jack so I can convert the old jack into a swinging standing foot, or replace it later with an auxiliary weld o jack. Extremely easy installation for this jack. The method of attachment allows me to move the jack forward or backward on the tongue as I see fit. Crank is smooth and easy. Spring-loaded pullout bolt allows for very easy swivel. The original jack had a single wheel and was for a tongue weight of #500, while this new jack has a double wheel and allows for a tongue weight of #1500. As a result, moving the trailer by hand is like pushing butter. As always, the folks at etrailer did a great job of providing information, photos, and videos, to allow me to make the proper choice of item, and they did a great job in contacting me and shipping this to me.

by:

The overall build appears hefty.Tilt works well and stays at 90 degrees when supporting 3 snowmobiles on my dual axle trailer. My 13 year old granddaughter can one hand the crank when raising the trailer with the Jack. Not sure how well the double wheels will work when pushing the trailer in the garage to store but so far no problems. One upgrade they could do is us a better quality handle on the crank. This Jack came assembled!!Handle and wheels on.Quick install!!!

My new Dutton-Lainson Tongue Jack from erailer has eliminated the potential problem of receiving an unwanted tailgate ding. This unit is heavy duty with a 1,000 pound tongue rating - not some $35 throw-away unit that you usually get from Big Box stores.
Installation on my new Karavan Utility Trailer was easy enough, taking no more than 30 minutes, and that's without even reading the installation instructions!
The D-L tongue jack provides trailer tongue quick drop, as well as high quality worm gear internals.
Thanks etrailer! Satisfied Customer

Fits as needed
My old single wheel jack
was not enough
I have a sand car in the trailer it needed to be well made. It is. Time will be the true test.

by:

The jack works well, mounted to my trailer without issues. But on the second trip with the trailer, the cap on top fell off. I have had a difficult time finding a replacement cap and have defaulted to duct tape.

by:

Exact replacement for what I needed. Great customer service.

by:

I ordered a dual wheel 1,500 jack and received a single wheel 1,000# jack. When I notified etrailer, they made me feel like it was my fault, they didn't have mine in stock....went to Northern Tool and purchased what I needed. Still have not received my refund :-(

by:

Perfect size. Moved the trailer yesterday using the trailer jack, so much easier.

by:

The jack broke on our bear pontoon trailer. Tried looking number up on broken jack and couldn't find anything number wise to match. Called e trailer and asked them if they could cross reference the number somehow. And found a match that was verified by the manufacturer. Thanks for making it easy.

by:

Great replacement!

by:

I purchased this item to replace an original trailer jack that was a little too "lightweight" for the trailer/boat. Based on the hardware included with this jack, I was pleased to learn this jack can be installed on virtually any trailer. I was not able to use the original trailer mount from the original jack, but WAS able to mount this one directly behind the original welded mount. This jack makes any raising/lowering and moving the boat/trailer much easier than the original AND much safer.
