Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Recommended 10 Inch Wheels For Custom Trailer Application
If you are using axles like the Dexter Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs - 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern - 72" Long - 2,000 lbs # 20440I-ST-72, you can use 10 inch wheels like the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range E # AM3H460. When building a trailer you want to make sure that you have the capacity you need for your load compatible with the lowest/weakest component in your system. For 10 inch wheels you are looking at 2000 lb axles, so you may want a tandem...

  • Determining Which Replacement Axle Fits 2000ish Trailstar Trailer
I would be happy to help you determine the correct replacement axle for your 2000 Bass Tracker Pro Team 175 and Trailstar trailer but the axle length is actually measured hub face to hub face so you will want to put your hubs back on temporarily and measure from there. In addition you will need to measure from spring center to spring center, and determine the axle rating of your axle. If the axle tag is still on the center of the axle it will have your axle rating on it, or if not you...

  • Availability of Complete 72-Inch Axle Kit with Electric Brakes and 4-on-4 Hubs
We do offer some complete axle/hub/brake kits such as # 35545E-ST-89 from Dexter, but we do not have a complete kit with the exact combination of features you require. We do offer 72-inch axles with 58-inch spring seats and idler hubs in your 4-on-4 bolt pattern. Part # 20440I-EZ-72 is rated at 2000-lbs and features EZ-Lube spindles. Part # 20440I-ST-72 is also rated at 2000-lbs and has standard spindles. Both kits will work with 12-inch wheels and both come complete with bearings, races...

  • Can Leaf Springs be Mounted Below Trailer Axle # 20440I-ST-72
All you have to do to mount the leaf springs to the bottom of trailer axle # 20440I-ST-72 is to weld on new spring seats to the bottom of the axle. This axle has a 1-3/4 inch outer diameter so you would need 2 of spring seat # TRSS175. Welding should be done by a professional welder. Trailer suspension needs about 3 inches of space to travel so if there is not enough space then you would also have to use taller hangers. Dexter does not recommend using the over/under conversion kits with...

  • How To Find The Right Axle/Axle Options For Pop-Up Campers
There are some measurements that you need to take to find out what kind of axle will work with your 1966 Apache Eagle Camp trailer. First measure from one hub face to the other. This is your hub face measurement. The hub face is where the wheel and the hub meet when bolted down. Then measure from the center of one spring hanger to the next. Try to find the axle capacity, usually it is somewhere on the axle but since it is so old, it may be worn off by now. If that is the case get an idea...

  • Replacement 4 on 4.5 Bolt Pattern Trailer Rim and Radial Tire
The tire size ST175/80R13 is pretty standard, so we can definitely get you replacements for the tires. I suggest going with the Taskmaster Provider ST175/80R13 Radial Tire # TTWTRTM1758013C. These are rated up to 1,360 pounds at 50 psi and also has an M speed rating, which means it is rated up to 81 miles per hour. On the other hand, the wheels are proving to be more difficult. The 4 on 4.5 bolt pattern was used on older vehicles and wasn't really ever used for trailers. At least that...

  • Recommended Trailer Axle Kit for Fabricating Off-Road Utility Trailer
If you are building your own firewood hauling trailer you might want to consider one of our Timbren axle-less suspension kits. These are available with idler hubs and some also have lifted spindles that can give you better ground clearance (for use in the woods when gathering your firewood). We do have standard beam axle kits too but the Timbrens can be the ideal way to go for fabricators that want an effective but simple installation of their trailer suspension. • Are Washers Always Needed Between Spindle Nut and Outer Bearing
Spindle washers aren't always used. We actually sell complete axles with hubs like the # 20440I-ST-72 which does not come with washers. Typically if a washer is needed it will be on a higher capacity hub/axle.

Yes, spindle washers are to be used except in a rare occasion where they will not fit. However, the Dexter Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # 20440I-ST-72 does not come with washer. You will need part # SW1000.

  • Recommendation For Replacement 2000-Lb Trailer Axle
The best way to find an axle that will match your trailer is to measure the spring-center-to-spring-center distance and the hub-face-to-hub-face distance of the axle you have on your trailer currently. I have attached a drawing that shows where these dimensions are taken. It may be easier to replace the axle with an axle that has the hubs already included. If you find you need a 72-inch axle and your wheels have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern I recommend part # 20545I-ST-72-15. This comes...

If you have longer axles with the hub face to hub face measuring 72 inches with spring centers at 58 inches, then you will want # 20440I-ST-72 for 4 bolt hubs.
