Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large, aftermarket tires - may require Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearances

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself.

Installation Step 1

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the side chain with the lever is on the outside. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

Installation Step 2

2. Reach around behind the tire and fasten the ends of the chain together.

Installation Step 3

3. Move back to the front of the tire and fasten the ends of the chain together using the built-in lever.

Installation Step 4

4. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed by moving the hook to the next link.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Purchased for our early 60’s snow plow. These chains worked well the whole season- 3 months here. Never threw a chain or got stuck

These tire chains fit my JLG Boom Lift tires, size 25x7-12, perfectly after I removed two cross links. They were longer than I needed, but worked perfectly fine after I made the adjustments, which was very easy to do! The advice provided by Andrew was perfect! Thank you Andrew and Also, I received the chains 2 days after I ordered them - super fast shipment!!! Great company to deal with. I would buy from them again!

2015 Dodge Grand Caravan

Bought for my 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. It is now unstoppable. My Vermont private road is too steep to be classified as a town road, and it went up through 6 inches of snow with icy spots without ever flinching.

I bought the chains after one winter morning when I could not get up a hill near my home. Living in Colorado one day can be a blizzard and the next sunny with snow melt off in a few days. Since my purchase I have not had the need to put on the chains but I know that they will fit and I am prepared. I gave an average rating for that reason.

As with everything I get from etrailer my new snow chains arrived in an extremely timely manner. Had a few questions during the ordering process which were answered with a single, helpful, friendly, concise phone call. My vehicle is equipped with oversized tires so I had to use the tire size calculator to get the correct fit for the tires I am using. The tire calculator was right on. Perfect fit. Perfect wheel well clearance when mounted on front or back. I needed type S chains for my commuter vehicle to make the 5 mile trip to the main road on those 12" snow/ freezing rain mornings not only comfortable, and possible, but also as safe as possible. Long story short if you need snow chains of any size or style etrailer is you store.

Chains were easy to put on and with the rubber tensioners these chains are snug. Haven't used these on the road but my driveway was covered with snow and ice and it handled it great

I bought these chains after the 1st storm in Atlanta. Had them on for the second storm. Drove all night, didnt slip once. The 1st chain took me about 15minutes to get on, the second only took 5 minutes. They went on easy, and came off easy. Driving in the snow with these chains made the driving boring. Excellent product.

We are glad to know the chains did the job and were not to difficult to install.

2014 Dodge Grand Caravan

Got on time, packed nice, made in China, and have not used yet. Going to use these on Dodge Caravan FWD when towing travel trailer out of steep camp sites were road surface is poor. Hoping it does work out.

Excellent fit and worked very well. Only issue so far is that we had one link break, but I am guessing that this happens on occasion. We have them on again for this winter's plowing, but have not had to use them yet (thankfully!).

2011 Honda CR-V

Website is useful, ordering is easy, prices are reasonable, shipping is fast.
Will be back when will try chains during Christmas trip.

Easy to install. Did not have chance to use yet.

2014 Jeep Compass

Awesome product, although truth be told I havent used them whatsoever yet - havent had that much icy roads. But it looks sturdy and in good shape.

Great product! Very easy to install on my crown Victoria! I can’t wait to use in the snow!

installed in about 10 mins ; have not used in snow yet ; able to drive at about 30 mph on hard surface road with no problems , just to make sure they would hold up ... NO COMPLAINTS . GOOD PRODUCT!

here again, thank you

Review from a similar Twist Link Ladder in Tire Chains

I know iron. 17 yrs trucking, mostly doubles across Montana into the Dakotas. Chained up a lot.
Pictures show what you get with this set I bought for my 2005 Tahoe. Heavy gauge chains w/triple cam locks w/long wrench for excellent leverage to get cams tight. Tight cams mean links don't "slap" pavement which causes increased wear. They arrived today so not used yet. However, for my application they will last a lot longer than those cheaper; light gauge, "disposable" chains, use once and throw away after you pay a tow bill.

Review from a similar Twist Link Ladder in Tire Chains

Chains seem to be made top quality. Only test fit them so far with perfect fit on a 35x12.5 r18 tire. Hopefully I dont have to use them but the security of having them and knowing the quality and fit is great is worth it.

Review from a similar Twist Link Ladder in Tire Chains

Needed these chains for a snowboarding trio this December. Installed them in my yard to make sure they fit, and figure out which link worked best. Now that i know what link to use, next time it should only take sbout 10 min to put them on. I really like how they stay away from my wheels so should not scrstch them. My yard was very soft from recent rain and you can see how well the chains dig into the mud. Should be really good on snow/ice.

  • Snow Chain, # PWH2435S, Recommendation for a Motorhome Built on a Ford E450 with Duals
Yes, these Glacier Mud Service Snow Tire Chains - 1 Pair, part # TC1142, would be a good choice for your Ford E450. From the research I conducted I was able to determine that putting a snow chain that is constructed of all chain on the outside tire of the duals seems to be the most efficient way to get around in a dually truck in the snow.

There is a top speed rating when driving with tire chains. It is 30 miles per hour maximum unless the vehicle owners manual states that it should be lower, then you must go by the lower speed. We have numerous chain options for a 2006 Dodge Sprinter. I have included a link to the main page for your vehicle. Just click on the correct tire size. I checked out the owner's manual for your 2013 Audi A6 and it does mention chains not be thicker than 0.4 inches though it also mentions only using chains on "certain tire sizes" so I recommend making a quick call to your local Audi dealer just to ensure your 255/35/20 tires will be able to use chains. If so I recommend checking out the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains # TC1142 which fit your tires and are just 0.21 inches thick.

The Glacier Tire Chains, # TC2229CAM, are listed as a fit for a 2005 Honda Odyssey with 235/65R16 tires. However, you will want to check a couple of things first before installing any chains. Start by turning the wheels to either all the way right or all the way left. Then measure the distance from the inside of the sidewall of the tire to the nearest part of the van on both sides. This is clearance that you cannot exceed with chains. You will also need to check the owners manual of the...

The Titan Tire chains part # TC1142 are a fit for your tire size of 225/75-16 and can be used on your motorhome but due that extra weight they would wear out quicker than if it was a lighter vehicle. If you wanted a set of chains that use a harder metal that wouldn't wear out as quickly we have the Konig chains part # TH01571245 which would work great and install a little easier as well. Also has built in tensioners.

For the tire size you listed of 225/75R15 the correct size Glacier Twist Link chains are part # TC1142. Twist links chains are great as they offer a smoother ride quality. They don't do quite as well in deep snow when compare to square link or on ice like the V-bars. For a trailer though I would recommend going with a diamond pattern like the part # TC1553 as they offer better side to side traction over ladder style chains. With a trailer you don't want to end up locking up the tires and...

As you mentioned in your question, the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains # TC2216 are a confirmed fit for your 225/75R15 winter tires but not for the slightly larger 235/75R15 size tires. The difference in the two sizes is definitely minimal but I spoke with my contact at Titan and he says he thinks this slight difference could cause some trouble with fitment, as the 225/75R15 is at the large end of what that chain will work on.
