Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans, and small trucks - especially those with large, aftermarket tires - may require Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearances

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle itself.

Installation Step 1

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the side chain with the lever is on the outside. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

Installation Step 2

2. Reach around behind the tire and fasten the ends of the chain together.

Installation Step 3

3. Move back to the front of the tire and fasten the ends of the chain together using the built-in lever.

Installation Step 4

4. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed by moving the hook to the next link.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chains, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

2010 Toyota Camry

I have an ‘07 toyota camry tire size 215/60/16 and was able to install the chains on both of the drive tires in less than 7 mins by myself. I could've bought snow cables but based on my research, the camry is not low profile, plus the snow chains have more “bite” traction vs the cables! Etrailer is my go to place for auto accessories!!!!! Thanks!!!!!! Id give a 10 star, but 5 star was the max, extremely pleased with my experience with the purchase.

Worked well

- TC1138

I have been happy with the use of this product. It fits right with the extra purchased suspenders. Only had to use them once but it was a good use. I pulled these out a few days ago looked them over and I was happy there wasn't any evidence of rust or serious flaw. After a year --I can honestly say that these chains did the job. I never review a product quickly unless I get a decent amount of use but after a year these are still like new. Sometimes chains go bad after one use, these did not, they are still good to go if needed.

2006 Chevrolet Silverado

Haven't had to use the tire chains I bought yet. The only problem I had when I got the order was the plastic container that the trailer chains were in was broken. Hope to use them soon. Thank you for asking,

- TC1138

Sorry this is not a product review, as we haven't had snow since I got the chains. But it is comforting to know they are in my trunk. I did want to say that I had excellent experience with etrailer. The communication and support was stellar, and the product arrived very well packed on the day that was quoted.

- TC1138

Exactly what I was expecting. Each set of chains even has it's own storage box.

- TC1138

Planning on a trip very soon. I found that I should have snow chains for our safety. I checked etrailer.com and not ony found what I need, but at a very good price. I ordered and hoped it would arrive in time. Low and behold, not only was it a quick delivery, but was way faster than I thought it would take. etrailer.com has never let me down anytime I have needed them. I highly recommend them.

2009 Suzuki SX4

I have not actually had the opportunity to put on and use my new snow chains yet. But, I am happy with the shipping process, although they had arrived one day later than the date that was suggested by UPS. I'm sure that my snow chains will work just fine when I need to use them for the first time. No ice on our local area roads right now...

- TC1138

They fit well and were easy to install. The instructions were easy to follow. A good value.

Review from a similar Twist Link Ladder in Tire Chains

I've had very positive experience with this company. Last winter I ordered cable-chains from another provider. They weren't up to the task I needed and one set broke pretty quickly. I then ordered a single set (two tires) of chains from etailer to replace the cable-chain that snapped. The purchasing process was seamless, they arrived quickly and they were of very high quality. They took me through the rest of a challenging winter season. With another winter now approaching, I just ordered a 2nd set so I can install them on all four tires. I won't bother to try to use the cable-chains. Good company, good product.

Review from a similar Twist Link Ladder in Tire Chains

Good chains, but were a bit too long for my 2017 Lexus GX, so a few links of chain had to be cut with a bolt cutter. Even with the chain cut, there is a little extra length that needs to be tied up so that it isn’t clunking as you drive. I’ve had plenty of experience installing chains (both cable and regular) and these were the most difficult ones I’ve ever put on. Hopefully this gets a bit easier with practice!

Review from a similar Twist Link Ladder in Tire Chains

Delivered fast, popped these on to get gamiliare with them and actyally tested them out on a road that was snow packed solid ice, my truck would not spin... i tried to make it, but the chains would not allow it in my situation. Yes chains ride rough.. real rough to be honest, but its better than not making it to your destination. They are heavy ( a big pro) feel like excellent quality and would recommend them to anyone who lives in a state that allows them.

I have only used them twice since i bought these, how ever they have held up great in storage, not a single spot of rust, or anything. They are still in brand new condition

Review from a similar Twist Link Ladder in Tire Chains

Chains seem to be made top quality. Only test fit them so far with perfect fit on a 35x12.5 r18 tire. Hopefully I dont have to use them but the security of having them and knowing the quality and fit is great is worth it.

Review from a similar Twist Link Ladder in Tire Chains

Needed these chains for a snowboarding trio this December. Installed them in my yard to make sure they fit, and figure out which link worked best. Now that i know what link to use, next time it should only take sbout 10 min to put them on. I really like how they stay away from my wheels so should not scrstch them. My yard was very soft from recent rain and you can see how well the chains dig into the mud. Should be really good on snow/ice.

Ask the Experts about this Titan Chain Tire Chains

  • How Fast Can you Go with Tire Chains Installed
With the Titan Chains like the # TC1138 installed we typically recommend a speed rating of between 30-35 miles per hour as the maximum speed. There are no chains that will allow you to travel faster than that. Also, if you are in snowy enough conditions to call for chains you probably shouldn't be going faster than 30-35 MPH even with the extra traction that chains provide.

  • Tire Chain Availability for Tire Sizes 245/40R18 and 255/60/R17
Yes we can help you get setup with tire chains for both vehicles but the sizes of the tires are different enough that one set isn't going to fit both. For the 245/40R18 the # TC1138 that you referenced is a fit and would work well. For a similar set that fits the 255/60R17 we have the part # TC3010 which is a confirmed fit. Be sure to check the owners manual of both vehicles to determine if there are any tire chain restrictions.

  • Class S Tire Chains For 2009 Subaru Outback Wagon
I did some research on your 2009 Subaru Outback Wagon and found that only Class S tire chains are to be used, and they are only to be used on the front tires. Tire chains are size specific so you will want to know the tire size before choosing tire chains for your Outback. From our fit guide I found that there are 3 typical tire sizes on the Outback so I will give a recommendation based on that. The tire sizes are 205/50-17, 225/55-17, and 225/60-16. If you have a tire size that...

  • Are Tensioners Recommended For Titan Tire Chains
We sure do. The tensioners will help keep the chains tight to the tire and centered. They're pretty inexpensive and easy to used, so there's really no good reason not to use them. For the # TC1138 Twist Link chains, I'd recommend using the # TCMA2 tensioners which fit 14-24 inch rims. The owner's manual for your 2006 Toyota Sienna recommends class S chains like the # TC1138, and goes on to recommend they be installed on the front wheels only. I've linked to product videos for the...

  • Can Snow Tire Chains for 2004 Chevy Venture be Used to Get Out of Mud
You can use any method you like to get you out of mud though there are a couple of things to note. The first is that you will need chains that have an off-road designation and the other is that you need to follow the guidelines for using chains that is in the owner's manual of your 2004 Venture which states you should use Class S chains on the front tires only. There is one chain that fits the bill on the size 215/70-15 or 215/70-15 tires that are common to '04 Ventures, the Titan Chain...

Yes it means a pair or 2 tire chains. Like with the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains part # TC1138, which is designed to fit two (215/60-16 and 215/55-17) of the three tires sizes available on your 2015 Nissan Altima, you will have two chains for the front drive axle. If you have the 215/75-15 size tires on your 1998 Chevrolet Astro then I recommend using the Pewag Snox Pro Self-Tensioning Snow Tire Chains # PWSXP570 because they are easy to install and feature square links in a diamond pattern for great traction. For a more cost-effective option I recommend the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains # TC1138 which uses twist links in a ladder pattern. These aren't quite as easy to install but they will get the job done. Attached is a review video of the...

Titan Tire Chain Sets # TC1254 and # TC1138 differ in certain construction features and in the tire sizes they will fit. Chain set # TC1254 has links that are 5.3mm thick and that fit 14- to 16-inch tires. Chain set # TC1138 uses thinner 4.5mm links that make it suitable on vehicles with 14- to 19-inch tires that require this special low-profile S-Class type chain. • Tire Chains that Will Fit 225/60-16 and 225/60-17 Tires on a 2000 and 2013 Subaru Outback
The Thule tire chains will not fit both tire sizes but you could use the Glacier chains # PWPLC1138. They do fit 225/60-16 and 225/60-17 tires. You can also use Titan chains # TC1138. For these chains I recommend adding the rubber adjusters, # TCMA2. Be sure to consult the vehicle owners manuals for specific information on the use of tire chains. • Do I Need Snow Tire Chains For All 4 Tires On My Front Wheel Drive 2007 Toyota Avalon?
You could certainly just add chains to the front tires since that would provide you with driving traction. But ideally you would want all four tires to have chains regardless of which axles drive the vehicle, as this would be the most effective and safest approach. That being said, I did check the owner's manual for your 2007 Toyota Avalon and it appears that Toyota recommends chains only be installed on the front tires. It looks like the two most common tire sizes on a 2007 Toyota Avalon...
