Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, Part Number PW20286. These cable chains are designed to fit tires from 15 all the way up to 20 inches and offer a 35 mile an hour maximum speed. These chains are great for occasional use. They've got a sturdy steel wire construction around the outside, as well as on the cross cables. They've got hardened springs that cover the cross cable. It's going to provide that traction we need.

They'll move freely back and forth and really get embedded there, so we can get good grip on that ice and snow. They've designed it with a nice, low, profile design to help keep and maintain a smooth ride. Also, these are going to work great on both front wheel drive and rear wheel drive vehicles. The ladder design on these chains is going to meet all Department of Transportation requirements in all states. We're here on the passenger side of the vehicle. We spread our chain out here, just to make sure we don't have any kinks or any tangles that we need to work out before we get started. We're working with a tire size of 275-55R20, but again, many different sizes available with these Glacier chains, so you'll have a wide variety of sizes that these are going to fit. The first thing you want to look for is the is yellow, triangle shape tag.

This is going to say right hand side, or left hand side, and give you the indication of which way the tires should be rotating. That arrow will be facing towards the front of the car. We'll now move that arrow and that yellow tag down, around to the front side of our tire there. We'll want the first rung of our ladder to be tucked nicely right underneath the front side of our wheel, there. Give it as much slack as it needs. Get it tucked in there, just like that.

When we roll forward, we'll be able to gather that up right along the rear here. Maybe up here in the top somewhere, so we can get it connected. We'll now pull back and get as much slack as we can out of the front side of our chains, here. Then we can bring our rear up. On the back side here on the rear, we'll bring the cable right through that, and we'll have to rotate up right into that catch point. We'll then bring our rest of our slack out here to the front side. Just like on the rear side there, we've got another catch here.

We'll want to choose one of the mounting locations here. We've got 7 to pick from. On the rear, we use the second. That means those here on the front, we need to use the first, the second, or the third. Once we have that in place and in that set location, we'll use the large lever. Take up some of that slack. See if you can't get that last one. There we go. We'll pull that down. That's going to give us all the tension we'll need. The leverage is designed to come down and hook on to the cable. Depending on where you'll be positioning your cable, your tag end may be a little bit longer. They've got two nice catches designed right in here. You can simply clip it into there and hold it. Keep it from flopping around on you. WE've got our rubber adjuster, here. This is Part Number PW99. It's got 5 hooks on it. We're just going to find 5 locations around our cable chain, here. We're going to hook these in all the way around, 5 different locations facing out away from our sidewall. We don't want to run any risks of getting them up there and having any damage occur. You just want to put some tension on there to stiffen that up a little bit. We're going to drive forward a few car lengths. We'll double check it just to be sure we don't have any extra slack in there that we need to get out or any issues to deal with. With our chain secure, that's going to complete today's look at the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains, Part Number PW2028C. .

First, I'll note that I rated the product as "Excellent" based on the visual quality of the cable chains as well as the east of installation. I haven't driven on them yet so I will reserve my final opinion. I ordered express delivery and received the shipment yesterday as expected. I read the installation instructions last night and fitted the chains today. I put both on in 10 minutes and could probably have saved a bit of time because I was trying to get the hooks exactly the same (inside and out) but could not make it work. So, I settled for 2 in - 3 out on one tire and 3 in - 2 out on the other. I also bought tension rings but I did not install them today. So, with tension ring installation, say 15 minutes maximum to install chains on two front tires. 721832

I bought the tire snow cables and tensioners together. They arrived quickly, were packaged very well, and although I haven't put them on yet, they appear to be very good quality. 340019

I was amazed at the speediness of the shipping and delivery! I am so excited about using the chains. It has been a snowy and icy season this year and I will be more confident knowing I have these for my vehicle. I work at a hospital, which as you know, does not close when conditions are bad. Now that I have these I have more confidence in my ability to get to work in extreme wintry weather. Also these were about half the price that the A???Z??? Retailer priced a set at last week. Thanks for having reasonable prices that won't break the bank. 176751

Ordered 3 things late on Sunday. Got a call early on Monday, not an email, a call. From a very nice young(my assumption) lady to inform me that one of the items I ordered was discontiued and they just ran out of their stock - before my order of course. But, this was no big deal, they had two other solutions. I opted to just take my other two items. Paid a mere $7.50 for 3-5 day shipping, well, yeah, its Tuesday, and I got it early this afternoon. Thats a total of less than 44 hours, with a repackage due to the order change and I had the exact items I bought in my hand. Only thing I'd suggest - make the website more iPad friendly. Some of the picture/text boxes were stacked on top of one another. Other than a website that could use a little cleaning up, the company experience was fantastic. I am a first time orderer,er,er and will do it again once I can get permission from the boss(wife). 109043

The chains arrived sooner than expected and were easy to install on my 2015 Subaru Forester. Because of the clearance between tire and wheelwell this chain was recommended. The video, which shows them being installed on a 2015 Subaru Foresters rear wheels, contradicts the owners manual which tells you to install them on the front wheels. The price was very reasonable. The multi arm adjusters I feel are a necessity and should be included with the chains at an additional cost. Finally, I have not tried them out yet but am confident they will give me additional traction in snow. erailer is a very reputable company and I highly recommend them. 411322

Per the Subaru technical manual, while tire chains are not recommended, if needed S style spring chains can be used on the front tires only (2017 Technical Manual, section 8-12). While I hope to never require them, I live in Washington State. When the roads are severe enough, chains can be mandatory. This is especially true for National Parks such as Hurricane Ridge where weather conditions can change rapidly. After watching the etrailer video for installation of chains on a 2015 Forester, I purchased a set of PW1038 Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains and PW105 Multi Arm Truck Tire Chain Adjusters. I have test fit the chains with adjusters on my front tire and they appear to be a good fit. I turned the tires hard right and hard left and checked my clearances and found no interference with the fit. Unfortunately, there is no snow for me to do a test run at this time. Please note the etrailer video test fits the chains on the rear tires and the Glacier instructions specify installation on the rear tires for all wheel drive vehicles. This information is inconsistant with the 2017 Subaru Forester Technical Manual for front tire installation only. 455011

Quality product. It fits. It got here right when they said it would. Perfect. I ordered the PW1038 low-profile S Chains for my 2014 Subaru Outback. They fit, using the 2nd from last locking link from the end. They do not rub the shock absorber. Great. etrailer gave an estimated delivery date, and they arrived exactly on that date. Tip: They ship using UPS, but then hand it off to USPS, meaning it arrived in my US Mail Box, not on the front porch. More secure. I doubt I will every have to use them in a snow-chain Level 3 condition (in which ALL vehicles, 4WD or not, have to chain up), but in CA, NV, and OR, you have to be able to show the police that you HAVE the chains in your vehicle, even though you are not using them on the tires. I recommend this solution for my fellow Subaru owners. 484709

Always excellent customer service with etrailer.co My first set of cable chains arrived quickly and fit perfectly. Be sure to order the rubber adjusters. They are very convenient, worth every penny. This is my second set of cable chains, the first for a front wheel drive Venture, the 2nd for an AWD Safari. Even though it's AWD, the cable chains on the rear really improve traction. Be sure to always follow the manufacturer's "speed limits" when using this product to prevent catastrophic failure! Read all info supplied and enjoy your enhanced mobility! 28082

At this point all i can say is they fit. i've tried them on but haven't used them yet. it took about one week to get them from the time i ordered them. if you've never used chains before, don't be fooled by how easy it appears to be to put them on from watching the videos. they do it in summer weather and put the car up. in reality, you'll be laying in the snow trying to get to the inside of the tire and make the connection, not an easy or fun task when it is cold and miserable outside. 165562

No question that these cables get the job done. Saved Christmas, went 30 miles in AWD Pacifica with all 4 wheels in cables. Handles snow pack perfectly. Also returned home to 12" powder on steep driveway(15 degree with hairpin turns) and unloaded all passengers in the garage!! Nothing less than amazing, assuming the driver has experience with snow conditions. I now have similar cables for both other vehicles. Don't forget the rubber tensioners, keeps everything secure and quiet. 6352

I received my order quickly and will be teaching myself how to install these snow tire chains this evening when I get home. These are the same snow tire chains selling in our area but for a much better price. We are taking a trip up to the mountains this weekend and our area mountains have received hundreds of inches of snow. I wouldn't think of heading up without high quality chains for our car. Thanks so much for the fantastic turn around time I would definitely purchase items from this retailer in the future! Thank you etrailer! 338276

Well, I believe they are still sitting in my garage. We took a trip to the snow last year and the highway required chains. At the last minute we decided to take my husbands truck rather than my passenger vehicle, so we never did have to use them. Hopefully someday, someone will need them and we will be able to use them :- I appreciate the follow up. I remember everything being great with this purchase and I would purchase from you again in the future.

Bought these with the hope of never having to use them on our Forester but required to have for visits to National Parks during winter. They lived, unused, in the back of the car until major February snowstorm hit. We have a short but steep hill to traverse to get out to plowed roads. These chains did the trick. They were easy to put on and take off for the five minutes they were needed to get the car up or down the hill. 610117

Good news. The order arrived on the 6th day. To be sure they fit I did a test installation. I installed the Glacier PW1038 snow cable/chains on our 2016 Subaru Forester (225 -60R-17). The chains fit perfectly and on the 2nd notch. (See attached pix). nice fit: away from the rim and other body parts. The PW105s also helped greatly to snug the package. Cris T 467430

I purchased the PW1038 cable chains for a winter trip from our home in Texas to Yellowstone National Park. I was concerned that the road conditions we anticipated during our trip would dictate the use of traction devices or risk time lost waiting for improving road conditions. As it turned out we did not need the devices. Therefore, I am unable to comment on how effective they were in providing any additional traction for our vehicle. However, since I never like to use something for the first time under less than ideal conditions, such as cold temperatures and blowing snow, I decided to not only fit test the devices but to also test my ability to install them in a minimal amount of time and therefore personal exposure to the elements. I am happy to report that following a little struggle to fit the first one, I was able to quickly and efficiently install the second. After removing both, I reinstalled one to verify I had learned the process. I am confident that had I encountered the need to use these traction devices I would have had no problem getting them on and off. 594559

So far everything has worked great, I used them last year at Sequoia and Yosemite around New Years, was a bit snowy and a good part of the parks were closed because of it, but for being my first time driving in the snow everything went smooth, after that I recommend your products and service to a couple of friends heading to big bear after helping me out deciding what product and why I should get certain type of chainscables for my car.

I needed some light chains for emergencies. These fit my Acura and were easy to install. The cables come in a small bag that keeps them compact. Be sure to get the chain adjusters. They are necessary to tighten the cables around the tires. The installation videos were very helpful. I have not used them yet, so I cannot report how well they might perform on the road. 459134

I was able to use the etrailer website to quickly select the right tire chains for my car and tire size. The price was good and the delivery fee was reasonable. Do you have a question about this Tire Chain?

  • Recommended Tire Chains for 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek
  • Tire chains do come in several varieties and some need more space within the wheel wells than others in order to operate safely. There are actual chains like # PWPLC1142 and also the "spring chain" or cable type such as # PW1038 which require far less space. Both of these chain products fit the 225/55R17 tires on your Crosstrek and you can see these and others for your tire size on the linked page. • Recommended Traction Device for a 2017 Subaru Forester with 225/60-17 Tires
  • According to the owner's manual for your 2017 Subaru Forester, tire chains cannot be used because of the lack of clearance between the tires and vehicle body. However, other types of traction devices like snow sock can be used so long as they are class S compliant. For the 225/60-17 tires on your Forester, I recommend using the ISSE Hybrid Snow Socks part # TCH70. The snow socks will be an excellent option for you that will provide traction on both snowy and icy roads. They are very...

  • Tire Chain Recommendations for a 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek
  • According to the owner's manual for the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek you cannot use tire chains on the vehicle. The problem with is that chains are required by law in some areas. This is the Tire Chain Paradox or Reno's Law. The bottom line though is that neither a vehicle manufacturer nor dealership can make you break the law. If chains are required by law the law wins out over everything else. What I recommend are chains or traction devices that require the least amount of clearance. If...

  • Do Tire Chains or Tire Cables Provide Better Traction
  • When the auto maker permits their use tire chains will generally work better than tire cables since they have more surface that can bite into snow and ice. We do offer tire chains for your tire size P215/50-R17 that are shown on the linked page. All of these are the special low-profile type which are called S-Class chains and they include both cables like # PW1038 and chains like diamond pattern Konig chains # TH00023095. The P215/50-R17 size tires you have are not one of the stock...

These chains are confirmed to fit the tire size on your vehicle and will do a nice job of providing traction during snowy and icy conditions. I took a look at the owner's manual for your 2013 Subaru Outback, and it does indeed state that the use of tire chains is not recommended. However, it goes on to say that alternative types of traction devices, such as spring chains,...

However, I understand there are certain situations in which they must be used therefore I suggest placing them on all four tires. The reason for this is because your vehicle is all-wheel drive and generally speaking tire chains need to be placed on the drive axle. The Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains part # PW1038 that you referenced...

This would allow you to use cable style chains such as Glacier Cable Tire Chains # PW1042 which will fit your Subaru if it has 225/55-18 tires, or Glacier Cable Tire Chains # PW1038, which are a fit for your vehicle has 225/60-17 tires. If you are going to use these off-road you will need chains that are rated for that and I recommend the Konig Standard Snow Tire Chains # TH01571265 because their D-shape is designed for off-road use, they are easy to install, and they are made of durable manganese nickel alloy steel. They do require you have 16mm (just under 1/4 inch) of clearance...
