Class S Designation

SAE Class S tire chains are designed for use on vehicles with restricted wheel-well clearance. Certain newer cars, vans and small trucks, especially those with large, aftermarket tires, may require Class S chains.

SAE Class S Clearance Diagram

These chains will fit your tires provided there is both:

  • A - a minimum of 1.46" (37 mm) between the top of the tire tread and the wheel well
  • B - at least 0.59" (15 mm) between the tire's sidewall and the vehicle

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

I sincerely wish I had known about these sooner. I used these for the few bad snows last year and this year and they have gotten me home safely while other motorist were stranded due to icy or snow covered roadways. A true life saver! 467320

Still going strong. Just used them to get home safely during a snow this past Sunday.

Great quality, easy to install and remove with a little practice 457970

So far everything has worked great, I used them last year at Sequoia and Yosemite around New Years, was a bit snowy and a good part of the parks were closed because of it, but for being my first time driving in the snow everything went smooth, after that I recommend your products and service to a couple of friends heading to big bear after helping me out deciding what product and why I should get certain type of chainscables for my car.

I received my order quickly and will be teaching myself how to install these snow tire chains this evening when I get home. These are the same snow tire chains selling in our area but for a much better price. We are taking a trip up to the mountains this weekend and our area mountains have received hundreds of inches of snow. I wouldn't think of heading up without high quality chains for our car. Thanks so much for the fantastic turn around time I would definitely purchase items from this retailer in the future! Thank you etrailer! 338276

Well, I believe they are still sitting in my garage. We took a trip to the snow last year and the highway required chains. At the last minute we decided to take my husbands truck rather than my passenger vehicle, so we never did have to use them. Hopefully someday, someone will need them and we will be able to use them :- I appreciate the follow up. I remember everything being great with this purchase and I would purchase from you again in the future.

I purchased the PW1038 cable chains for a winter trip from our home in Texas to Yellowstone National Park. I was concerned that the road conditions we anticipated during our trip would dictate the use of traction devices or risk time lost waiting for improving road conditions. As it turned out we did not need the devices. Therefore, I am unable to comment on how effective they were in providing any additional traction for our vehicle. However, since I never like to use something for the first time under less than ideal conditions, such as cold temperatures and blowing snow, I decided to not only fit test the devices but to also test my ability to install them in a minimal amount of time and therefore personal exposure to the elements. I am happy to report that following a little struggle to fit the first one, I was able to quickly and efficiently install the second. After removing both, I reinstalled one to verify I had learned the process. I am confident that had I encountered the need to use these traction devices I would have had no problem getting them on and off. 594559

Such a great place to buy chains and hitches for your car. The service is amazing and my products were promptly handled with incredible speed. I’ve now bought two trailer hitches and a set of chains for my car. The products and installation instructions were perfect. Thanks so much for wonderful products. 730983

Always excellent customer service with etrailer.co My first set of cable chains arrived quickly and fit perfectly. Be sure to order the rubber adjusters. They are very convenient, worth every penny. This is my second set of cable chains, the first for a front wheel drive Venture, the 2nd for an AWD Safari. Even though it's AWD, the cable chains on the rear really improve traction. Be sure to always follow the manufacturer's "speed limits" when using this product to prevent catastrophic failure! Read all info supplied and enjoy your enhanced mobility! 28082

Quality product. It fits. It got here right when they said it would. Perfect. I ordered the PW1038 low-profile S Chains for my 2014 Subaru Outback. They fit, using the 2nd from last locking link from the end. They do not rub the shock absorber. Great. etrailer gave an estimated delivery date, and they arrived exactly on that date. Tip: They ship using UPS, but then hand it off to USPS, meaning it arrived in my US Mail Box, not on the front porch. More secure. I doubt I will every have to use them in a snow-chain Level 3 condition (in which ALL vehicles, 4WD or not, have to chain up), but in CA, NV, and OR, you have to be able to show the police that you HAVE the chains in your vehicle, even though you are not using them on the tires. I recommend this solution for my fellow Subaru owners. 484709

First, I'll note that I rated the product as "Excellent" based on the visual quality of the cable chains as well as the east of installation. I haven't driven on them yet so I will reserve my final opinion. I ordered express delivery and received the shipment yesterday as expected. I read the installation instructions last night and fitted the chains today. I put both on in 10 minutes and could probably have saved a bit of time because I was trying to get the hooks exactly the same (inside and out) but could not make it work. So, I settled for 2 in - 3 out on one tire and 3 in - 2 out on the other. I also bought tension rings but I did not install them today. So, with tension ring installation, say 15 minutes maximum to install chains on two front tires. 721832

Good news. The order arrived on the 6th day. To be sure they fit I did a test installation. I installed the Glacier PW1038 snow cable/chains on our 2016 Subaru Forester (225 -60R-17). The chains fit perfectly and on the 2nd notch. (See attached pix). nice fit: away from the rim and other body parts. The PW105s also helped greatly to snug the package. Cris T 467430

I was amazed at the speediness of the shipping and delivery! I am so excited about using the chains. It has been a snowy and icy season this year and I will be more confident knowing I have these for my vehicle. I work at a hospital, which as you know, does not close when conditions are bad. Now that I have these I have more confidence in my ability to get to work in extreme wintry weather. Also these were about half the price that the A???Z??? Retailer priced a set at last week. Thanks for having reasonable prices that won't break the bank. 176751

Ordered 3 things late on Sunday. Got a call early on Monday, not an email, a call. From a very nice young(my assumption) lady to inform me that one of the items I ordered was discontiued and they just ran out of their stock - before my order of course. But, this was no big deal, they had two other solutions. I opted to just take my other two items. Paid a mere $7.50 for 3-5 day shipping, well, yeah, its Tuesday, and I got it early this afternoon. Thats a total of less than 44 hours, with a repackage due to the order change and I had the exact items I bought in my hand. Only thing I'd suggest - make the website more iPad friendly. Some of the picture/text boxes were stacked on top of one another. Other than a website that could use a little cleaning up, the company experience was fantastic. I am a first time orderer,er,er and will do it again once I can get permission from the boss(wife). 109043

2017 Subaru Forester

Per the Subaru technical manual, while tire chains are not recommended, if needed S style spring chains can be used on the front tires only (2017 Technical Manual, section 8-12). While I hope to never require them, I live in Washington State. When the roads are severe enough, chains can be mandatory. This is especially true for National Parks such as Hurricane Ridge where weather conditions can change rapidly. After watching the etrailer video for installation of chains on a 2015 Forester, I purchased a set of PW1038 Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains and PW105 Multi Arm Truck Tire Chain Adjusters. I have test fit the chains with adjusters on my front tire and they appear to be a good fit. I turned the tires hard right and hard left and checked my clearances and found no interference with the fit. Unfortunately, there is no snow for me to do a test run at this time. Please note the etrailer video test fits the chains on the rear tires and the Glacier instructions specify installation on the rear tires for all wheel drive vehicles. This information is inconsistant with the 2017 Subaru Forester Technical Manual for front tire installation only. 455011

No question that these cables get the job done. Saved Christmas, went 30 miles in AWD Pacifica with all 4 wheels in cables. Handles snow pack perfectly. Also returned home to 12" powder on steep driveway(15 degree with hairpin turns) and unloaded all passengers in the garage!! Nothing less than amazing, assuming the driver has experience with snow conditions. I now have similar cables for both other vehicles. Don't forget the rubber tensioners, keeps everything secure and quiet. 6352

I couldn't get '5 star' excited over a set of traction devices because I haven't used them yet, but until that moment I'm very satisfied. The price was right, the shipping was fast and the installation?? well, they're tire chains...but after a couple of practice runs, they seem to be as easy as any to install. Here's to hoping the roads are smooth and dry and I never have to use them. They now have a happy home in the trunk of my car. 683211

2015 Subaru Forester

The chains arrived sooner than expected and were easy to install on my 2015 Subaru Forester. Because of the clearance between tire and wheelwell this chain was recommended. The video, which shows them being installed on a 2015 Subaru Foresters rear wheels, contradicts the owners manual which tells you to install them on the front wheels. The price was very reasonable. The multi arm adjusters I feel are a necessity and should be included with the chains at an additional cost. Finally, I have not tried them out yet but am confident they will give me additional traction in snow. erailer is a very reputable company and I highly recommend them. 411322

  • Where to Install Tire Chains/Cables on a 2016 Subaru Forester
According to the owner's manual for a 2016 Subaru Forester, tire chains cannot be used because of the lack of clearance between the tires and vehicle body. However, I understand there are certain situations in which they must be used therefore I suggest placing them on all four tires. The reason for this is because your vehicle is all-wheel drive and generally speaking tire chains need to be placed on the drive axle. If you are going to use these off-road you will need chains that are rated for that and I recommend the Konig Standard Snow Tire Chains # TH01571265 because their D-shape is designed for off-road use, they are easy to install, and they are made of durable manganese nickel alloy steel. According to the owner's manual for your 2017 Subaru Forester, "tire chains cannot be used on your vehicle because of the lack of clearance between the tires and vehicle body." However, we certainly understand certain states and conditions require the use of tire chains therefore, the choice is ultimately up to you whether or not you want to use them. If you do decide to use tire chains on your Forester, the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains part # PW1038 would be the correct size for your...

  • Tire Chains to Fit 2016 Subaru STi with 245/40R18 Sized Tires
The Glacier Chains Snow Tire Chains # PW1038 are confirmed to fit the 245/40 R18 sized tires on your 2014 Subara STi. These are constructed of wire cross cables with spring rollers wrapped around them so they are considered spring style chains. They're also SAE Class S so they're designed for vehicles with little clearance for tire chains. For rubber adjusters to make installation easier use #

  • Tire Chains Recommendation for 2014 Subaru Outback
I took a look at the owner's manual of your 2014 Subaru Outback and it stated that while you cannot use tire chains because there is not enough clearance, another traction device can be used so long as it is Class S compatible (which means they are smaller for more clearance) and put on the front wheels only. For your 225/60-17 tires there is a solution available, the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains # PW1038. These are cables and not actual chains and are also Class S compatible so they...

  • How to Determine Which Axle of AWD Vehicle Should have Tire Chains Installed
In your owners manual there will be a detailed section on which axles should be used for snow chains. Ideally you would put them on all axles, but if only one set is available you want to put them on the primary drive axle. Most likely it will be the rear axle but the owners manual will clarify this.

  • Tire Chains for a 2017 Mazda 3 with 215/45-18 Tires
According to the owner's manual for your 2017 Mazda 3, tire chains can only be installed on the front two wheels. Therefore, as long as you install the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains part # PW1038 on the front two wheels of your Mazda 3 then they will fit your 215/45-18 tires. Please note that while using the above set of tire chains, a set of rubber adjuster like the Glacier Multi-Arm Rubber Adjusters part # PW105 is recommended in order to ensure a snug and secure fit. I have attached...

  • Which Glacier Tire Cables Fit Tire Size 225/60-17
The correct tire cable you would need for your tire size of 225/60-17 is actually the part # PW1038 and not the number you listed. These do satisfy all DOT requirements for tire chains. You will want to check your owners manual for any tire chain restrictions as well.

  • Should Snow Chains on a 2012 Subaru Outback fit Front and Rear Axles
We always recommend that you follow the snow tire guidelines of the vehicle as listed in the owners manual but we found that in a lot of situations customers choose to not follow them so we are in an odd situation where we want to be helpful to the "real customers" and what they are choosing to do with their vehicles and our products, but also not get them in trouble with their vehicle manufacturer. We found that the Glacier Cables part # PW1038 does fit on the front and rear tire of...

  • Differences Between Titan Snow Cables and Glacier Snow Cables 2009 Toyota Sienna
According to your owner's manual, tire chains/cables are only to be used on the front two wheels and must be Class S compatible. For your 2009 Toyota Sienna we have both Titan part # TC1038 and Glacier part # PW1038 cable options. Both cables are similar in design with a few key differences. The Glacier cables have an included 90 day warranty whereas, the Titan cables only have a 30 day warranty. I recommend going with the Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains part # PW1038 for this reasons....

  • Why Would Snow Cables Cause Inner Tire Clearance Issues on a 2008 Scion tC
First thing you need to do is check the owners manual for your 2008 Scion tC to determine if cables/chains are okay to use on your vehicle. For some vehicles there just isn't enough inner tire clearance to use cables/chains. For your vehicle the only tire size info we have is 215/45-17 which calls for the # PW1034 Glacier cables. You may be trying to use a set of cables that are just too big and that is why there is the fit issue. For an option that does not put any portion of the...

  • Can Tire Chains Be Used On 2012 Chevrolet Volt
I did some research and read in the owner's manual on page 10-58 that tire chains are not to be used. We do run into this problem with customers wanting to take their vehicle where chains are required by law. The owner's manual says not to use them so it can be very confusing. Due to the clearance around the tire that is required when using tir chains, you may be able to use a Class S chain that has a much lower profile than standard chains. We have tire cables that many customers use...
