Features to know about

Fully Sealed and Corrosion Resistant

This Demco DA86 actuator is built for life at the boat ramp. Its zinc-plated body resists corrosion when exposed to saltwater, and the master cylinder is sealed with a diaphragm cap and a booted push rod to keep moisture out, so you can use it in coastal or brackish water environments.

EZ Latch Coupler

The EZ Latch coupler drops onto a 2" hitch ball and clicks shut on its own, even if the latch is already closed. You don't need to hold the handle while you work the jack or line up the ball. That keeps fingers out of the pinch zone and makes it faster to hook up by yourself. After it clicks, give it a firm tug to confirm the catch, then add a coupler lock (sold separately) to help deter theft while you're away.

Breakaway Status at a Glance

The color coded decal on the emergency lever shows red when the breakaway is engaged and green when it's released, so you can spot a tripped system before you tow. Bear in mind, this isn't a parking brake. If you're on a slope, use wheel chocks and your truck's parking brake to keep your trailer from rolling.

Smooth, Controlled Braking

Inside the actuator, a spring-loaded push rod controls line pressure while an integrated dampener reduces impact shock. That gives you more predictable braking even when your load shifts or weight fluctuates.

Reverse Lockout Solenoid

The electric reverse lockout ties into the tow vehicle reverse light circuit. When you shift into reverse, the solenoid blocks brake pressure so you can back up without the brakes engaging. If wiring is not available, use the manual lockout tab as a backup.

Well made, and rugged. Was skeptical about the ball hitch just dropping on and securing to the trailer ball but works great. Installation was easy. Mounting holes aligned perfectly. I did have to drill two holes for the two cable attachments but went smoothly. However, the only complaint would be that the Grade 8 mounting bolts were not supplied. Would still highly recommend this actuator for towing a #5k+ load.

Exactly what I needed. Just bolt on and fill with DOT 3

  • Can Demco DM78CV Brake Actuator Fit A Big Tex 70TV Tandem Axle Trailer?
Hey Mario, it might work. That Big Tex trailer seems to have electric drum brakes from the factory, and the coupler seems to be channel mount and not a standard tongue mount. If you swapped to hydraulic brakes and you have a 3" wide tongue, then yes you can install the Demco Drum Brake Actuator # DM78CV. You'll just need to doublecheck what I mentioned previously. This actuator is rated for 8,600 lbs and works great with tandem axle hydraulic drum brake setups. One last thing to do...

  • Replacement Trailer Brake Actuator For 6,500lb Trailer With Hydraulic Drum Brakes
Moira, that’s right in this actuator’s sweet spot since the Demco DA86 Drum Brake Actuator # DM78CV is rated for 8,600lbs. As long as you're running hydraulic drum brakes and your tongue fits the 3 inch wide channel, the # DM78CV will handle it like a champ. Bonus: the included solenoid helps lockout the brakes when you are reversing. Surge brakes by nature engage the brakes when reversing if you don't use a lockout. Manual lockout is also included if you don't want to mess with wiring...

  • Do Demco Brake Actuators Ship Pre-Bled And Ready To Go, Or Do They Need Fluid?
Trevor, all of the brake actuators, including the Demco Drum Brake Actuator 8,600lbs # DM78CV, ship dry to prevent fluid leaks during transport. You’ll need to fill it with DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid and bleed the system once installed. It’s a quick job if you have a buddy and a brake bleeder. I attached a demonstration video along with a help article that covers this topic. If you need any assistance or have any other concerns, feel free to drop a comment on this page! :)

  • Are Demco DA86 Brake Actuators Made In The USA?
Yes it is, Carter! Demco builds these actuators in the USA with high-quality components. It’s one of the reasons their brake systems are so popular with commercial and marine trailers. I see you were looking at the Demco DA86 Brake Actuator # DM78CV which is rated for 8,600lbs and is for drum brakes. It's coated in zinc which is nice for boat trailers or other trailers often exposed to less than ideal conditions. A nice feature is the built-in solenoid lockout that stops the brakes from...

  • How To Activate Manual Lockout Or Electric Lockout On DA86 Demco When Reversing Trailer In Gravel?
Janet, it’s simple. There’s a small tab on the Demco 8600lb Drum Brake actuator # DM78CV that you swing into place and pin (this prevents the inner slide from pushing in during reverse). Its a great backup even if your solenoid fails or your tow vehicle isn’t wired for reverse power. If you actually want to wire it up electronically, which is what I recommend, I can help you out with that too. You just run a solenoid wire to the reverse wire on the back of your tow vehicle (or the trailer...

  • Does DA86 Demco Drum Brake Actuator 8,600lbs Include Bolts To Install?
Great question, Sheila; mounting hardware isn’t included in the Demco 8,600lb drum brake actuator # DM78CV, but you’ll need four 1/2" x 4-1/2" Grade 5 bolts to install it to a standard 3" wide trailer tongue. Be sure to use lock nuts and washers, and torque the bolts properly for a secure and safe fit. As you can see in the attached image, Demco recommends 75 ft lbs of torque. Was your old one welded or bolted on?

  • Can I Use Demco DM78CV 2" Brake Actuator With 2-5/16" Ball?
Not with this unit, Clint. The DA86 Demco Drum Brake Actuator # DM78CV is designed strictly for a 2” ball. If you need to use a 2-5/16”, you’ll want to look at the DA91 or a heavier-duty actuator that’s built for that coupler size. You could look into the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Drop - Drum - Zinc - 2-5/16" Ball - 8,000 lbs # DM8759411 and see if it'll work for you. It seems to match what you are needing. Let me know if you need any more help selecting the correct one for your...

  • Trailer Hydrualic Drum Brake Actuator That Won't Slam Brakes On When Backing Trailer Into Barn
Yes, Shane! The DA86 Demco Drum Brake Actuator # DM78CV comes with a reverse lockout solenoid and a manual lockout tab, so you’re covered no matter what. Whether your trailer’s wires are easy to tap into, or you just want to manually pin it, you’ll be able to back up without your brakes locking up. What do you currently have? There's a chance you can buy a lock out kit for it instead of replacing the actuator.

  • How Long Is The Warranty On Demco Brake Actuators?
Dennis, Demco backs the # DM78CV Drum Brake Actuator with a 1-year warranty. But between the zinc coating, protected internals, and reinforced coupler, these actuators typically last many years with regular maintenance. Did you have bad luck with your old actuator, or why are you replacing it?

  • Does Demco DM78CV Drum Brake Actuator Have Steel Or Plastic Housing?
Camille, you’ve got a sharp eye! The Demco # DM78CV actuator body is all heavy-duty zinc-plated steel, but this version includes a plastic cover over the master cylinder and wiring for added protection. It’s especially handy for saltwater or muddy job sites. Does your trailer have a welded or bolted on actuator? This one can do both, but I recommend bolting since it's easier and less trouble down the road if you need to replace it some day.
