Question:
Can I use this with a single axle trailer that weighs about 6,500 lbs? drum brakes

Moira, that’s right in this actuator’s sweet spot since the Demco DA86 Drum Brake Actuator # DM78CV is rated for 8,600lbs. As long as you're running hydraulic drum brakes and your tongue fits the 3 inch wide channel, the # DM78CV will handle it like a champ.
Bonus: the included solenoid helps lockout the brakes when you are reversing. Surge brakes by nature engage the brakes when reversing if you don't use a lockout. Manual lockout is also included if you don't want to mess with wiring stuff. :)
What trailer do you have and what do you normally haul with it?
