This Dexter zinc-plated brake actuator is built to keep heavy trailers under control. With an 8,000-lb capacity and 800-lb maximum tongue weight, it uses a hydraulic surge system to synchronize trailer braking with your tow vehicle. As you decelerate, the actuator telescopes and applies pressure to its master cylinder, sending consistent hydraulic force to the drum brakes. The result is steady, predictable braking without extra electronics or setup.
Built for long-term use around water or road salt, the steel housing is fully zinc plated for corrosion resistance. This makes it a dependable pick for boat trailers or any setup exposed to harsh conditions. The sturdy construction also holds up when backing tight or jackknifing into position—no bending or twisting under load.
Inside the actuator, a unique roller design keeps the inner slide moving smoothly in a straight line with less resistance. That means less clunking or jerking when braking or starting again. The motion stays true and quiet even after repeated use, giving a more solid feel every time you tow.
Installation is straightforward with its bolt-on mounting to a standard 3” wide channel tongue. The integrated 2-5/16” heavy-duty coupler fits common hitch balls and provides a secure latch every time. Once it’s bolted up, you’re ready to bleed the lines and hit the road—no welding or fabrication needed.
A complete breakaway system is already in place to stop the trailer if it ever disconnects from the tow vehicle. It’s a simple but crucial safeguard that helps keep everything under control when the unexpected happens.
(Note: This model does not include a reverse lockout; using free-backing brakes is recommended for reversing without engaging the trailer brakes.)

Just installed my new 8,000LB surge tongue, shipping was fast and installation was easy, great product and works just like its suppose to, would be nice if it had a reverse lock out but because of its design it was easy to make my own lock out.

Ordered on Sunday early afternoon and received a notice that same day in late afternoon that the brake actuator had shipped. Don’t see that too often. Item was delivered in a few days and tracking the item was detailed. Brake actuator was a perfect fit in replacing an old worn out titan model 6 7500 lb with a titan 8000 lb. Easy to change out. Took maybe 20 min. Great service.

After 36,000 miles on my boat trailer, my previous Dexter Brake Actuator was looking pretty worn. A replacement was needed. Easy to install - just two bolts, filling the brake fluid reservoir and connecting the brake line.
Awesome shipping on time. New unit bolted right on to replace old.
I regret buying this brake actuator for my boat trailer. This is the exact same actuator that was on the trailer when I got it, but the original was 25 years old and neglected. I decided to buy a new actuator, same as original and also replace the brake lines, baking plate and I even got the drums turned.
Well I go to fill the master cylinder up with brake fluid, open the bleeder screw and try to bleed this unit. It is the most difficult process. This is the absolute worst choice in hydraulic brake actuators for drum brakes on a boat trailer. The ONLY way you can actuate the brakes is to either use a long fulcrum (long piece of angle iron) or chock the wheels and hook it to your truck and back up. This is extremely difficult, cumbersome and just plain antiquated with today's technology. This actuator could certainly be updated with modern design/engineering and make this process much easier.
DO NOT BUY THIS ACTUATOR!

If you use a longer 2 by 4 it is much easier to get leverage to move the coupler. Another way that you can bleed the brakes more efficiently is with a Hand Vacuum Pump Brake Bleeder item # PTW87030.

The replacement actuator works like a dream. I sometimes forget I am towing a surge brake trailer as there isnt the thunk feeling when I start up again after braking.
