Video Transcript for In-Depth Review of the Glacier Multi-Arm Tire Chain Tensioners for 16" to 19" Rims

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at these Glacier Rubber Multi-Arm Tire Chain Tensioners for 16 inch to 19 inch diameter wheels, and this is for one pair. Now, basically, these will allow you to fit and tension your snow chains quickly and easily around your tires. These do hook onto the side chains of your tire chains for installation, and just to give you an idea, popping up an insert that will show you these tensioners on the chains on your tire, give you an idea of how they hook up. They do provide a nice, tight, secure fit and constant tension, and they use these multiple rubber arms to ensure the tension even if one of the arms does break. But you can see on each end of a rubber arm, you have the hooks right here, and these are hooked to the side links on your tire chains.

Now, these are made for use with cable, twist-link, V-bar, or square-link chains, and they are constructed of a durable, flexible rubber material. And when you do receive these, they will be all closed in just like that and sent to you, and you can even store them this way when they're not being used, and then when you go to use them, just fold out your rubber tensioners, all six of them, and just like that, you're all ready to go to hook up. Few specs on this, the application, these will fit tire chains that install on 16 inch to 19 inch diameter wheels, and this is for a quantity of two adjusters, which will work for one pair of chains. Now, they also come in other sizes, we have them to fit smaller wheels like 12 inch to 16 inch size wheels, that's a part number PW107, and then we also have these to fit larger heavy-duty wheels, they'll fit 19 inch up to 24 1/2 inch diameter wheels, and they're part number PW103. But that should do it for the review on the Glacier Rubber Multi-Arm Tire Chain Tensioners for 16 inch to 19 inch wheels..

These made my tire cables look much more secure

Great product and excellent super-fast service. I needed chains on very short notice and the folks at etrailer got the job done, while also keeping me up to date.

by:

These chains are for my 2017 Mercedes Sprinter 3500 4x4. They work as advertised. You will want to practice installing these BEFORE you have to use them. I got these right before leaving on a trip, and was required to chain up, and had to learn on the fly on the side of the road in the driving snow. The instructions were great though, so by the time I got to the 4 wheel I had it down. Duallies only get the outside wheel, and that was a bit of a challenge, but learned it and got it done. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because (And lucky I did) you NEED to get extra Rubber Band kits for each wheel. The single Rubber Band (1) is not enough to put good tension on the chains, and (2) is only a single point of keeping your chains on the vehicle. If the single Band fails, there go your chains. etrailer may have recommended the extra kit, I don't remember, but I bought a set of spider bands and some extra singles for each wheel. I ended up using the spider bands to each segment of the chains and they snugged everything down nice, for good tension, and good piece of mind. Great Product, just make sure to back yourself up with extra band kits...

Bought the Glacier v-bar chains for the rear tires in extreme conditions and the Titan cable chains for lighter duty, also to be installed on the rear tires. Videos show that the cable-chains can be installed on the front tires of a 2020 or greater Toyota Tacoma, though not recommended by the owner’s manual. These cables are S-class compatible so they should work on the front tires, however caution should be taken as appropriate. I would recommend only installing on the front tires after the v-bar chains have been installed on the rear tires and extra traction is deemed worthy.

Both the Glacier and Titan multi-arm adjusters were ordered in support of the chains.

Parts arrived as ordered in a timely fashion.

Have not installed or used these products at the time of review.

I ordered the snow cables for my Subaru 2018 Outback and received them in 3 days! Your customer service is outstanding! I reordered a second set and received them in 4 days. I just had a chance to use them in Atlanta when we had ice and snow. I used only one set on the front and they worked perfectly. i watched the etrailer installation video for a Subaru and it made the easy to install. It took me less then 5 minutes in my garage. (Outside in the snow and ice might take longer). I drove around Atlanta in the ice and snow and the cables performed flawlessly. I plan to buy a set for my daughter. Thanks again!

by:

Good news. The order arrived on the 6th day. To be sure they fit I did a test installation. I installed the Glacier PW1038 snow cable/chains on our 2016 Subaru Forester (225 -60R-17). The chains fit perfectly and on the 2nd notch. (See attached pic). the tighteners were easy to put on and really snugged it down (PW105).

Bad news. I put the chains away and attempted to close the bag. The zipper on the black bag broke on first pull. Ouch!!

love the fit, off the rim, close to the tire and away from other parts of the vehicle.

very nice! Hope I don't need them!

The product is easy to install they're easy to use. the only issue I had as you can see in the photo. The first time I went to use them one of the bungees broke off in my hand.this however didn't stop me from using them since there are six bungees total and they work good keep in my tire chains tight.
Disclaimer, I never tried to return the bungees and I never called the company to complain I just use them as they were because they still function well

by:

The chains arrived sooner than expected and were easy to install on my 2015 Subaru Forester. Because of the clearance between tire and wheelwell this chain was recommended. The video, which shows them being installed on a 2015 Subaru Foresters rear wheels, contradicts the owners manual which tells you to install them on the front wheels. The price was very reasonable. The multi arm adjusters I feel are a necessity and should be included with the chains at an additional cost. Finally, I have not tried them out yet but am confident they will give me additional traction in snow. etrailer is a very reputable company and I highly recommend them.

I have a 2012 Ram 1500 4x4 with 265 70r17 all terrain tires (general grabber atx). These chains are heavily built, and came conveniently packaged. I bought them as insurance for an upcoming elk hunt where I will be in the mountains during potential snow. Fit them in my driveway yesterday, and hope to not need them for the real thing, but feel better knowing they are there.

by:

They work great. Much more convenient than running several bungee cords.

by:

Rock solid design it will hold up for quite a while

by:

Very high quality rubber. I really had to work installing them on 16 inch chevy truck tire. I would think twice before putting this on 19 or 20 inch

These snubers seem to be unbreakable and will last much longer than rubber.I am very pleased with them.

by:

Excellent product support, videos, literature. I recommend etrailer highly. 2016 Toyota 4Runner.

by:

I like the chains; I think they look very well-built. I had to cut some links out because they did not fit my tires. (too long)

by:

The chain tensioners work well. I will take them off when winter ends to protect them from the sun and heat. Great product. So much easier to install than he standard metal spring tensioners.

by:

So far, these chains look like they will deliver. I wanted something better than a cable chain that only lasts one storm. In my local, we typically get freezing rain with temperatures in the 30's. These should be good on ice. Installation was fairly easy and the cam tensioners pulled the chains tight. I also ordered the chain tensioning bungie.

I'd purchased some other "chains" that were supposed to have plenty of clearance for my Subaru, but they didn't. In fact, they wouldn't work at all on the front wheels, which is where Subaru said that they should be used. And then I came upon the etrailer site and there was a video of a woman installing the PW1042 (or similar) "chains" on a Subaru. Based on the pictures, and the video, these "chains" looked like they really would fit my Subaru Outback, so I sent back the first "chains" I'd order from brand "A" and ordered "chains" and these star-shaped rubber "adjusters" from etrailer. With normal (cheapest) shipping, they arrived in a few days and I tried them on, on my car. (I have a carpeted garage, and I know, "weird," but that's the way the garage was when I bought it, so, well, I have a carpeted garage -- doesn't make me feel bad about trying on things like "chains" and then sending them back, since all they would have run over is carpet.) Anyway, the pw1042 "chains," not being split like the ones I'd previously ordered from brand "A" were harder to put on, but they weren't THAT hard. And the pw105 "adjusters" did a good job of tightening everything up. It looks like a good setup for occasional (more or less emergency in my case) use. The six-armed adjusters don't offer the single point of failure like the circular rubber adjuster that came with brand "A's" "chains." I assume that's a good thing, though I'll admit that the one thick circular rubber adjuster with multiple clips does look sturdier than the six-armed pw105 "adjusters." I worry about the pw105 adjusters having the rubber break at the center ring and/or at the outer metal hooks. I haven't used the "chains" yet, and hopefully I won't find out if this is a real weakness, or just a perceived one. But, like I wrote, there are six independent arms, and if one breaks, it would be easy to stop and cut it off and then continue with the remaining arms. I think as few as four, maybe only three arms would be sufficient to keep the "chains" snug and secure.

No snow or ice in a year havent used them but did put them on again, just to make sure I could still install them when if the time comes. Im still a happy customer.

by:

I was always getting stuck on driveways and side roads. Having these in my van have saved me from a few situations already this past winter. They go on and off easily. It was helpful to have a matt to lay on so I didn't get wet or muddy. I would, however, recommend a dry run first.

by:

I hope I don't have occasion to use the product ( tire chains ) but if I do........
I have several round trips across the Rocky Mountains pulling a trailer during this winter.
The chains appear to be excellent quality.
The delivery and customer service has been Fantastic and I will definitely look here first whenever I need truck and trailer stuff.

Had trouble getting out to get wood, a good amount of snow and ice underneath. Put on the chains and the old truck walked right through. We'll see how they hold up but I am very satisfied.

Both chains and rubber adjusters have arrived ahead of time and those were easy to install.

Thanks for reaching out. I like the product. It is easy to install and resistant.

Great chains, used them last year at Lake Tahoe during an epic week of snow and ice. Best combination of strong chains that'll last and easy on/off.

by:

Per the Subaru technical manual, while tire chains are not recommended, if needed S style spring chains can be used on the front tires only (2017 Technical Manual, section 8-12). While I hope to never require them, I live in Washington State. When the roads are severe enough, chains are required to be carried for at least two drive tires. This is especially true for National Parks such as Hurricane Ridge where weather conditions can change rapidly. National Parks require chains be carried for such conditions during winter months.

After watching the etrailer video for installation of chains on a 2015 Forester, I purchased a set of PW1038 Glacier Cable Snow Tire Chains and PW105 Multi Arm Truck Tire Chain Adjusters. I have test fit the chains with adjusters on my front tire and they appear to be a good fit. I turned the tires hard right and hard left and checked my clearances and found no interference with the fit. Unfortunately, there is no snow for me to do a test run at this time.

Please note the etrailer video test fits the chains on the rear tires and the Glacier instructions specify installation on the rear tires for all wheel drive vehicles. This information is inconsistant with the 2017 Subaru Forester Technical Manual for front tire installation only.

by:

eTrailer has asked me to review this product, which I purchased last year.

Unfortunately, I have been fortunate and have not found myself in road conditions requiring the use of chains or this product, and therefore I cannot attest to its quality or performance at this time.

I keep them in a toolbag in the truck, along with the Tire Chains I also purchased.

I rate 5 star because they are still in new condition and show no signs of deterioration.

by:

Well, the surest way to avoid the worst of storms is to buy some snow chains. I purchased some, installed in my driveway to be prepared for a roadside install and since carrying these chains have yet to encounter the need in many a winter trip across the plains and into the Rockies.
While the chains are great these tensioner make me confident that the chains will stay in place so I needn't worry about damage to my vehicle.
I'm confident this setup will work well should a storm ever challenge them. Bring it on!
