Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

The trailer hitch receiver arrived as scheduled, a mere 3 days after I ordered it. The equipment was just as advertised and fit well on our 2018 Subaru Forester. Installation was straightforward and I look forward to using to transport our bikes around!

The trailer hitch continues to work well. We have used it to carry our two E-bikes which weight about 70 lbs each all over the land, including a 1,000+ mile trek to the West Coast from Texas. No complaints.

Fit like a glove on my 2015 Forester, excellent instructions. Shipping box was destroyed in transit but no parts were missing. Total install time using a lift was 40 minutes.

@John Great to hear. Thank you for the kind words.

Hitch was well built and super solid! If you don’t have a lift, working under the car can be tedious and time consuming. For me, I had to remove the heat shield above the muffler to get access to the frame holes. Please make sure you have the necessary tools to widen the access holes. I ended up using a dremel to slowly grind away until the nuts and bolt could feed through smoothly. A bigger file or drill bit would have worked faster. Overall, it took me roughly 2.5 hours with less than ideal tools and rusted out bolts. Please set aside at least 3 hours to install this even if it says 45mins.

Although the hitch was great and the instructions were clear, the packaging could have been much better. No foam or bubble wrap protecting the hardware and it was so bad that the box was damaged and opened during shipping process as there was no foam supporting a 45lbs piece of metal. No blame towards the shipping carrier, almost all goes to e-trailer. I had to go to a UPS facility to pick it up because they did not want to send it out on their trucks. I hope e-trailer can start using some sort of filler in packing, at least some paper or bubble wrap. Also a thicker cardboard would probably help as well!

TLDR: Hardware is great! Super clean and lines up perfectly. Instructions are clear and concise. Was not packaged adequately causing damage to the box, luckily no hardware damage.

The trailer hitch receiver was delivered timely and it is stout. Looking forward to using it. It went on as shown in the very helpful instructional video. It came with all the parts wisely taped to it because the box was trashed in transportation. The one other issue was that one of the rectangular metal washers was stamped/punched off center so it’s open on one side. Hopefully with everything else intact and solidly put together it shouldn’t be a problem.

Actually the square spacer will need to be replaced. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you to take care of it.

by:
2018 Subaru Forester

Hitch itself is solid and great quality. Clean finish and extremely durable. Definitely make sure you have the right tools to complete the DIY install. Took about 3-4 hours to do on my own. Easy enough to do if you have the tools and time.

Negative: the hitch on my 2018 Subaru Forester places any attachments (cargo hauler, bike rike, etc) in direct alignment with the muffler exhaust. Did not realize that at first and melted several boxes on a long car trip. So will need an attachment to raise the carriers as looked into altering the direction of the muffler and most places told me it was not possible

site won't let me upload some pics but not that important. Watch the videos first, trust me! Took about 1 1/2 hours, installation was easy with the right drill bit and a few sockets and wrenches. Whoever thought up the bolt feedthrough wires is a genius, made this simple and easy!

Best trailer Ive ever owned, been across the country on some really iffy highways and State roads. Handles like a dream, you have to look to reassure yourself it is still back there! Our All Wheel Drive Subaru cant be towed so purchased this trailer specifically for it. Thank you for the high quality construction of the Bed, drive axleswheels &amp Tires! The built in Braking system gives an extra sense of safety.

Super easy to install. With two guys and less than an hour it was practically plug and play. It’s held up strong and hasn’t caused any concern as I’ve pulled quite a bit with it. Would highly recommend, save the money and install yourself.

by:
2016 Subaru Forester

I actually received it yesterday, 3 days ahead of when they said it would be here. I installed it yesterday. Took me a couple of hours. The person that devised the "fish wire system" needs to be congratulated. It worked so slick. The hitch is well made. I have absolutely zero complaints.

It is just fine. I remember putting it on was easy due to the fish wires on the bolts that were inside the frame. Your Company bailed me out when I could not find wheel hub bearing covers that were the correct size. In the future I will not hesitate to go to your website to get what I need.

Product fits very well. Armature installation was more like 4 hours mostly because of difficulty on the muffler side. Your packaging is almost worthless, it broke thru the box in 4 places, but the product is tough enough to survive without bending.

by:
2014 Subaru Forester

The hitch and wire harness arrived on time and undamaged and exactly s ordered. My son and I installed the hitch today, took about an hour and fifteen minutes once we gathered up the necessary tools and laid out the parts and backed the car onto ramps. We beforehand watched the video and followed the procedure as shown. Very helpful. They did not mention, however that the third exhaust hanger is on the tail pipe behind the rear axle, not on the muffler itself. Dropping and supporting the muffler allowed easy access to the mounting area. We also modified the heat shield to fit around the hitch mounts rather than discard it. Installed the wire harness later, again after watching the video. Again, the video very helpful and exact. Took about a half hour. The hitch fit perfectly and looks great. Thank you etrailer.

My original review stands. Still a great way to hitch up.

by:
2017 Subaru Forester

Packaging was a bit underwhelming—the box it was in was pretty destroyed. However, the product itself was only a little scuffed up and all the parts were present. The install took around 3 hours with two people but could have been done faster with more focused work and without needing to run out for a part for a tool. We drilled out holes for the heat shield and put it back in above the hitch receiver since that made me feel more confident, as did adding a bit of blue threadlocker to the bolts. From other reviews, I don’t think these are necessary steps, but it was for my peace of mind. Additionally, we used a step bit to drill out the holes which was a fine solution, though the burr method might be cleaner or better for another reason (I’m not sure). Also, be aware that there is a correct orientation for the square washers—one side fits better with the square of the bolt and will torque down correctly but the other is less secure. This is not mentioned in the instructions and I don’t think it is in the video. However all the rest went pretty smoothly, especially the fishwire—that was really well done!

by:

Pleasantly surprised. Worked well. Put heat shield back up after install with only 3 of 4 screws, cut it just around the frame hitch bolts.

by:
2015 Subaru Forester

Relatively easy install, with more effort spent removing exhaust than anything else. Note you will have to cut/drill to expand a hole as detailed in the instruction video. This wasn't a big deal but a step I didn't notice.

by:
2017 Subaru Forester

Easy install! Didn't need to widen any frame holes, either, as I was able to reach all existing holes with fish wires from rear of channel.

by:

Great quality hitch, easy step by step installation instructions, I'm extremely satisfied with this purchase!

by:

Very well made item was padded in box with hardware taped to hitch. Shipping box was trashed UPS driver says it is always like that but that contents are fine.

by:

Prompt delivery & fit just like advertised. Easy install. Since I don’t have a lift (who does?) I found it easier to remove the muffler (single exhaust) rather than letting the exhaust system hang low. You can reuse the heat shield if you cut out a section with snips but do not forget to throw out the one sheet metal screw that ends up under the hitch mounting plate.

by:

Easy to install with hardware supplied with kit

by:
2018 Subaru Forester

The hitch shipped quickly and arrived in good condition.
It's ruggedly built and fit perfectly on my 2018 Forester.
The installation videos were great and helped a lot. I knew just what to expect and the installation went well.
I'm very happy with the product and the company.

by:
2018 Subaru Forester

The trailer hitch was in good shape upon arrival (box not so much). The bolts and backing plates to attach the hitch were too large for the factory insert hole in the frame of a Subaru Forester (2018) and required some modification to get the bolts in place. Other than that the install went fairly well.

by:

  • Can 2017 Subaru Forester XT Be Used to Carry 290 lb Dirt Bike
For max tongue weight you will need to stay under the least rated component so even though the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98839 has a 525 lb tongue weight rating, I looked in the online owner's manual for your 2017 Subaru Forester XT and it looks like the max tongue weight they list for a trailer is 200 lbs so I can't recommend using anything where the carrier and cargo exceed that limit. I do however recommend going with a 2" option like the # e98839 though so that you can tow a wider range of accessories. • Will Removing Heat Shield & Leaving it Off to Install e98839 on 2014 Subaru Forester Cause Problems
Actually, removing and leaving off the heat shields won't present a problem. Instead of the thin metal of the heat shields, there's now a hitch installed which will provide much better heat shielding than the factory heat shields did. Plus, if they were left in place, the shield would be sandwiched between the hitch and the vehicle frame rail and it wouldn't be possible to torque down the fasteners correctly. This is shown in the linked installation video.
