Are you looking for a heavy duty roof rack for your car Well, we have here the Yakima HD Roof Rack system. In fact, heavy duty is part of the name with these HD Bars. Plus, this is kitted together with these TimberLine Towers that strap around your raised rail of your vehicle, creating this really sturdy, really high weight capacity system. Now, there are a lot of questions about this system since a lot of people are looking for something that allows them to carry heavy things and provides a lot of stability. So we're gonna address those questions and see what is the best fit for you and your adventures. These HD Bars are gonna be really large, but really sturdy crossbars.
So these go across your roof. They have this sturdy look to them. You have a little anchor points at the end in case you have cargo that needs strapping down. Plus, when you take out these side anchor points, you also get access to the inside of these bars for channel mounted accessories. For roofs of this style, one of my favorite options are these TimberLine Towers because not only do they provide all that support for those heavy duty crossbars, but they still look really sleek, and the strap that goes all the way around that raised rail just offers a lot of peace of mind for that stability.
On Ladderax is usually where I see these HD Bars. But did you know that the HD Bar and raised rail combo is actually really popular for those with even midsize SUVs The reason for that is because of the HD Bar capacity, and that's where there is potential for confusion. These HD Bars right here, well, they have a 500-pound weight capacity. That's a lot of weight that you can carry. So for your next road trip, if you're planning on loading up your sky box with all the gear or loading up canoes and kayaks, you're probably thinking, "Well, get the roof rack with the most weight capacity." These HD Bars are awesome, but chances are they might actually be overkill for your actual roof weight capacity.
Double check your manual real quick. Sometimes they will have a roof load limit where they'll say the maximum weight you can put on top of your roof. For example, with this Nissan Pathfinder with the factory bars that came from Nissan, your maximum capacity is either 100 or 165 pounds, way less than the 500-pound capacity of the HD Bars. So, if you add these HD Bars to your roof, you won't really increase your capacity, you'll still have the max capacity of your vehicle as your limit. And that's okay because then you can focus on not just getting the best and highest weight capacity, but you can also consider things like if you want maybe a sleeker look like you can get with the JetStream bars or maybe even different bar colors.
The HD Bar is only available in those three sizes and the single color black. So if you are looking for really sturdy, robust look and you really like the HD Bars, then great. But if you want other options, we have all them too. You do wanna be mindful of your accessory combos though, for example, with our Yakima ski carrier, because it has the more sleek clamp design, it doesn't quite fit all the way around the HD Bar. Now, there are plenty of accessories though that do have larger straps or clamps. For example, our Kuat kayak carrier here. This has a strap that very easily goes around the HD Bar and then tightens around it for a solid fit. Now, if you're not sure if the accessory you have or you want is gonna be a fit, well, we have specs and regimens here on our site, but you can always very easily call in or ask a question if you wanna double check. And don't forget, there's the option of your T-track or channel-mounted accessories that go through the end cap as long as you have that rubber strip out of the way. So when I looked through all the different reviews and listened to everyone else's stories about HD Bars and how it worked for their own adventures, a common theme I heard was that these are definitely overbuilt, and that's a big perk for those that are looking for that. If you really want that peace of mind of sturdiness and stability and ruggedness, well, HD Bars are definitely going to be the ones for you. I had a difficult time identifying whether these were the correct adapters for the rack towers that I was purchasing to fit my tracks but that has more to do with yakima doing everything a-la-cart instead of having kits that include everything you need if I hadn't already had the HD bars on my other rack and wanted to be able to transfer them to this rack I probably wouldn't have went to this expense because I think they are overpriced.AS far as etrailer is concerned I always receive great service and products and they are always well packaged and never damaged by poor delivery care and always fast delivery speed.
Really Easy to Install! Solid and Strong amount to Roof Rack.
The roof rack works well. The only problem I have is noise and while I'm carrying a ladder there is none. I figured if I take the ladder off I'll split a piece of pvc pipe and mount that on the front of it. But they work well for what I needed for work. The service from etrailer was excellant. I dealt with Carol and she did a very good job in helping me.
I choose etrailer simply because they mailed to APO. I’m a AD SM, and a lot of companies don’t shop to APO. These are a must for HD bars and the shipping was fast! I wish there was some way to know I had to get these because they are not included.
Yakima products aren't the cheapest on the market but the engineering is excellent and I'm very pleased with the finished installation. The included torque wrench insures each tower is installed uniformly.
I ordered the Yakima roof rack for a 2019 Hyundai Ioniq. I went with the heavy duty one for extra strength but it is quite a bit thicker, likely increasing wind noise. So I might have chosen the aerodynamic lighter weight one if I was to do it again. Also, I needed to get larger bolts for my kayak holder to get around the crossbar. The instructions and video on website were very helpful but they did not explain well how to adjust the toe and pitch. For the toe adjustment, you have to push the metal post with the tool before tightening. That was not obvious. For the pitch, it helped to do that once the towers are attached to crossbar. Then you can tilt tower while cross bar is laying flat (upside down). I ended up having to add tilt on both front and back crossbars for them to be flat when installed. Website said only front one would need to be pitched. I am very pleased with the look and sturdiness of the product. My Hyundai Dealer had zero options for this car.
