Question:

Do you have options for using Yakima CoreBar Crossbar - Steel - Black - 80 Long - Qty 1 Part Number: 8880656 with Rhino Rack legs or Malone towers mounted on a 2015 Toyota Sienna? Thanks!

Good morning, and thanks for reaching out. Yes, we do have an option for using the 80" Yakima CoreBars on a 2015 Toyota Sienna with the factory raised rails.

First, I would like to note that the 80" crossbars are super long for a Sienna. Yakima recommends a 50" CoreBar for the 2015 Sienna. We have a 2013 Sienna XLE with 41" OEM crossbars that are flush with the raised rails on the roof. The 80" bars are almost twice that length, so they are going to stick out like 20" past the raised rails on each side. Usually, a bar this long is not recommended. Not only will it look funny but if you go fast enough you might take flight LOL. Anyway, if you want to go for it here are the parts needed:

- Yakima CoreBar Crossbar - Steel - Black - 80" Long - Qty 1 # 8880656

- TimberLine Towers for Yakima Crossbars - Raised, Factory Side Rails - Qty 4 # Y33TR

Keep in mind the 80" CoreBars are sold individually so you will need to order two. The TimberLine towers are sold in a 4 pack which is all you need. Feel free to reach out and comment below if you have any questions.

Thanks for the quick reply Jesse! Although the 80" CoreBars will extend roughly 40" beyond the width of the factory raised rails, they will only extend about 14" past the width of the roof on either side of the aircraft. I'm still working out the additional airfoil width needed to add to the CoreBar ends to achieve the required lift coefficient. However, my question is more about Yakima CoreBar compatibility with Rhino Rack Legs and/or Malone Towers than flight characteristics of the 2015 Toyota Sienna with raised rails. Can you tell me which (if any) of the other manufacturer's legs/towers are compatible with the Yakima CoreBars?

@Supergare Ha! Good one! So, there is not any other brand of towers that will work with the Yakima CoreBars. If the CoreBars had a bottom channel you could technically attach them to the Rhino or Malone towers, but they don't. It really isn't recommended to mix and match brands with towers and crossbars anyway. There is no guarantee of things lining up correctly and you would void any warranty. The CoreBar has kind of a unique mechanism for attaching to the towers so you would only want to use them with Yakima towers. For an 80" crossbar the only option will be to use the Yakima TimberLine Towers. Can I ask why you want to use them with Malone or Rhino towers? Do you already own a set of towers and you want to re-use them? Just curious to know because I might have an alternative solution depending on what parts you have. Let me know.

@JesseM Nope, I'm starting from scratch. The Rhino legs have a more streamlined appearance, and also look like they'd be simpler and quicker to install or remove. As you've already inferred, 80" bars could be problematic in use, but also I have to be mindful of limited hangar space... The Malone towers don't look bad, have similar attachment features, and of course cost a lot less. I'm trying to accommodate two 17' canoes. They're both about 37" wide at the gunwale. Both are a little fatter around the middle of the hull, but I'm not judging. If we assume that both canoes were still young, virile, and at fighting weight (with no spare tire), together they'd need at least 79" (to allow a few inches on either side of the pair). Since we know they are both a bit pudgy in the middle, I'm not even sure that 80" bars will be enough. Married guys will understand this: Both canoes are suspended upside down from the garage ceiling, so I have to wait for just the right moment to try and get the wife to climb up there and take measurements at their widest point. This may require some relatively expensive wine, which I of course will have to use the utmost in self-discipline to not drink so much that I might say something about "pudgy in the middle", "fatter around the middle", or "spare tire".

@Supergare Gotcha thanks for elaborating. This is cracking me up! Again, there is physically no way to attach a Rhino or Malone tower to the CoreBar. Both of those towers attach to a bottom channel on the crossbar which the CoreBars do not have. If it is any reassurance, I do consider the Yakima towers to be better quality than the Rhino or Malone. The Malone are a solid budget option if you are trying to save money but they are not known for being super robust. The Rhino towers are better quality than Malone, but they can be a hassle to deal with and usually take several tries to get everything good and tight. The CoreBar attachments will be easier to set up. Rhino does make a 79" aero bar but there would be no way to use this on a Sienna. The bars are just too long and the mounting channel would be too wide to match up with the towers. The Yakima truly is the only option for a longer crossbar. As far as carrying canoes, my favorite canoe carrier by far is the LockRack Series-X # LR24VR. These can mount to the 80" bars and can easily hold a canoe up to about 42" wide. I like this carrier specifically because it does not require any additional straps so you spend a lot less time loading the canoes (or arguing with your wife) and more time on the water. That or you could do a more simple Foam block system like part # MAL25VR which is a lot more adjustable but can be more of a pain to get set up. The LockRack carrier is what I would use. Just keep in mind the crossbars have a 220 lb dynamic capacity so you will want to make sure the weight of both kayaks and whatever carrier you choose does not exceed this. I know how stout those Siennas are so I have no doubt the van could handle it. Also that size crossbar is going to generate some road noise that will definitely be noticeable from the cockpit.
