Does Anyone Make a SUP Carrier That Holds the Board Vertical

Updated 08/13/2024 | Published 08/10/2024

Question:

Does anyone make a roof carrier for a SUP that attaches to either the cross bars or roof rails and allows the SUP to be near vertical? Trying to have enough room for both a Thule roof pod and the SUP. Going on a 2021 Toyota Sienna

Hey Richard, thanks for reaching out!

It would be great if SUPs could be carried upright, but standard SUP carriers are only made to hold the boards flat because they are more liable to get damaged from crosswinds if carried upright due to how they are secured. The Front Runner Vertical Surfboard or SUP Carrier # FR46ZV you were looking at does give you this ability because of how much support the uprights offer with this configuration, but you'd need the Front Runner roof basket for this kit and they don't have a setup for your Sienna.

For your application I recommend getting the Yakima 60" JetStream Crossbars # Y00426 since they are the next size up from what Yakima recommends - which means you're getting a little more real estate. The bars mount to the raised rails on your 2021 Sienna with the TimberLine Towers # Y33TR for a pretty simple installation.

Then for a SUP carrier I recommend the Thule Compass # TH890000 because it has a smaller mounting profile on the crossbars so you can offset it a little more than a standard carrier. You'll want to mock up how much crossbar spacing you need by placing your SUP and box next to each other and measuring how much width they take up together.
