Question:

Will two Hobie Lynxs fit on two Thule Hullivators on Subarus 2026 Outback Wilderness? The 36 inch width of the Lynx is absolute max for the Hullivators. The Outback Wilderness roof appears to be strong enough. If so, what crossbars would you recommend?

Hi Robert! Sweet kayaks!

Using two of the Thule Hullavators # TH898 on the roof of your 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness is looking like it may be a no-go. With them being 36" wide, you would need to have at least 68" of useable crossbar length. You could technically get this with the Yakima CoreBar Crossbars - Steel - Black - 70" Long - Qty 2 # Y00423 and the TimberLine Towers for Yakima Crossbars - Raised, Factory Side Rails # Y33TR, but you would have a lot of overhang. With the Hullavator, you want 4" to 8" of overhang and it looks like going this way will give you a lot more than that, which will be far too much to safely use.

So with that said, I have two other options that I think would be more suitable for your vehicle.

First would be to use the Evo Raised Rail Feet for Thule Crossbars - Factory Raised Rails - Qty 4 # TH710401 and Thule WingBar Evo Crossbars - Aluminum - Black - 50" Long - Qty 2 # TH711320 and then two of the MOS UpLift Kayak Roof Rack and Lift Assist w/ Tie-Downs # MR89ZV. You can strap your kayaks directly to the MOS UpLift, or you could get something like the Thule Hull-A-Port Aero Kayak Roof Rack w/ Tie-Downs - J-Style - Folding - Channel Mount # TH849000 (or another J-Style carrier) to complete this set up. Keep in mind you will need two as you will need one per side.

Second would be something like the Yakima LowRider Kayak Trailer - 12" Wheels - 20' Boat - 750 lbs # Y82QD with the Yakima SweetRoll Kayak Roof Rack w/ Tie-Downs - Saddle Style - Clamp On # Y04074. Definitely not the same as a roof mounted option, but it would be very easy to load.

Hi Robert, what did you end up going with for your Outback—did you try the MOS UpLift setup or go with the Yakima trailer instead? Your results could really help others trying to carry wider kayaks like the Lynx.

@LazerS Just planning. Haven't bought the Outback Wilderness ... built in Japan, dealers still awaiting delivery. Sorry ... no useful info.

@RobertD Hey no worries! I am also a fan of planning ahead and typically follow the 6 Ps of Success (Proper Previous Planning Prevents Poor Performance). And good call getting the Japanese made one. They are just better. Are you getting a manual transmission? My brother is currently looking at one as well.
