Note: This dual-arm rack reduces the need for a bike frame adapter bar (sold separately) to mount a children's, women's, or alternative frame bicycle. However, to mount certain bikes or to keep your bike level on the rack, a bike adapter bar may be required. Most step-through bikes, dual-suspension bikes, and small children's bikes will require a bike adapter bar.

The sturdy, hitch-mounted Yakima BackRoad lets you transport 4 bikes on the back of your vehicle. The rack has dual arms that offer excellent bike support and anti-sway cradles with ZipStrip ratcheting cradle straps for quick and easy bike loading. The mast tilts away from your vehicle for cargo area access. And installation is simple with an included anti-rattle pin that secures the rack to your vehicle.

Folding Dual Support Arms with Quick-Release Lever

Yakima 8002702 BackRoad Dual Folding Arms

The BackRoad has dual arms that provide your bikes with excellent support and ground clearance during transport.

Yakima 8002702 BackRoad Folding Arms

The arms fold flat against the mast for parking clearance and compact storage. To fold them down, pull the grey quick-release lever on top of the mast. When you're ready to load bikes again, simply lift the arms back up until they lock into place with an audible click.

Anti-Sway Cradles with Ratcheting ZipStrip Straps

Yakima 8002702 BackRoad Anti-Sway Cradles

The BackRoad has anti-sway cradles that grip your bike frame at 3 different points - twice along the top bar and once along the downward bar, such as a seat post. This third point of contact helps to prevent sway and bike-to-bike contact.

Yakima 8002702 BackRoad ZipStrip Ratcheting Straps

Ratcheting ZipStrips let you quickly and easily secure your bikes in the cradles. These straps require none of the tugging and stretching that conventional straps require. Simply insert the strap into the buckles on the cradle and push it down until it's snug around your bike frame. The ZipStrips can be removed quickly by pressing the release levers on the side of each anti-sway cradle.

A layer of TPE padding on each cradle absorbs road shock and minimized vibrations

Tilting Rack with Spring Pin

Yakima 8002702 BackRoad Tilt for Rear Cargo Access

The rack tilts for easy access to your vehicle's rear cargo area. Just pull the spring pin at the base of the mast, and lower the rack into position. When you're ready to go, lift the rack up until it snaps into place with an audible click.

Easy Installation with Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin

The BackRoad easily installs with a threaded, anti-rattle hitch pin. Simply slide the shank in your hitch receiver, insert the threaded hitch pin, and tighten it down with the included tool. This not only secures the rack to your vehicle but also reduces noise and movement of the rack in your hitch. Available hitchlock (sold separately) allows you to lock the rack to your vehicle.

The rack works with both 1-1/4" and 2" hitches. To use it in a 1-1/4" hitch, simply remove the hitch adapter with the included Allen key.

Bike Security

The BackRoad includes a lock to secure your bikes to the rack. The integrated cable lock extends from the front of the left arm, wraps around your bikes, and secures to a post built into the arm.

SKS cores can be swapped out if you own other Yakima products and want to use the same key to lock them all.

Integrated Bottle Opener

Yakima 8002702 BackRoad Built-in Bottle Openers

The BackRoad includes a built-in, machined-steel bottle opener in case your beverage of choice doesn't have a twist-off cap.

Honestly, I just received this item so my rating is a bit premature. But it arrived sooner than expected and in good condition so until I actually unbox it and figure it out? Etrailer gets 5 stars for customer service at this point. 882033

Set up was simple and easy, super excited to start using this rack. Getting three diverse bikes on the rack was no problem, bikes with odd frames pose a little more of a challenge but it worked out fine. Looking forward to adding the adaptor to be able to carry skis this winter! 880546

Overall a pretty good product, my only complaint is that is too heavy, should be made of materials that are strong yet lighter. 860397

Ask the Experts about this Yakima Hitch Bike Racks

  • 4-Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2014 Honda Odyssey with 1-1/4 Hitch
I really like the Yakima BackRoad 4 Bike Rack # YA44FR because it's a quality bike rack that is easy to use, cost-effective, and features 7" between the cradles (center to center) for a much easier loading experience of your bikes. The BackRoad comes with a cable lock for the bikes but if you want to add a lock to the bike rack itself then you can use part # Y07235. You'll likely need to use the Adapter Bar # Y02531 for your kid's bikes so that they will fit properly, and I also recommend...

  • Recommended 4-Bike Hanging Rack With Adjustable Cradles For Adult and Kids Bikes
The Yakima BackRoad 4 Bike Rack part # YA44FR does not have adjustable cradles so they are locked in at the 7 inch mark. Although 7" between cradles is a lot more than the the standard amount of distance between cradles compared to the other bike racks, the cradles do not move. I recommend to use the Yakima FullSwing 4 Bike Rack part # Y02465 to get the adjustability that you are looking for. Adjusting the cradles back and forth on the support bar makes it easier to load the different...

  • Can Yakima BackRoad 4-Bike Rack Carry Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike
Yes, a dual-suspension mountain bike is absolutely compatible with the Yakima BackRoad 4-Bike Rack # YA44FR. As for the adapter bar, it is pretty likely that a dual-suspension mountain bike is going to need it. The reason being that many of them have frames which are at a downward angle, or have an otherwise unconventional shape; the tube top adapter bar is going to give these bikes a perfectly horizontal mounting point between the seat post and handlebars. The correct adapter is the...

  • Four Bike Rack Tilting Ability on 2020 Subaru Forester
The Yakima BackRoad 4 Bike Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting # YA44FR is not designed for tilting when bikes are loaded on any vehicle. The anti-sway cradles are not designed to hold the bike weight at that angle on any hanging style rack. If you have a 2 inch receiver, I recommend adding the swing away # Y02483 or you can instead use a platform style carrier which can be tilted like the Hollywood Racks Destination 4 Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # HR4000.

  • Is Bike Adapter Bar Needed for Hotrock 20 and 24 Bikes on the Yakima BackRoad
Thank you for telling me exactly what bikes you plan on transporting with the Yakima BackRoad 4 Bike Rack # YA44FR! When I looked at the design of your Hotrock bikes I'm pretty sure you're going to need to use an adapter bar for 2 reasons; I don't think you have enough room for the arm to fit in the smaller section of the upper tube, and even if you did both bikes would be sitting at an angle which will take away some ground clearance. To make things easier I recommend grabbing an...

  • Best Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2017 Jeep Wrangler JKU Unlimited w/ Large Spare Tire for Bike Rack
The best trailer hitch receiver for your 2017 Jeep Wrangler JKU Unlimited to use with a bike rack like your Yakima BackRoad 4-Bike Rack # YA44FR is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76104. The reason is when we test-fit hitches on a '17 Wrangler Unlimited, the Draw-Tite was the hitch that had the most ground and bumper clearance. The face of the receiver sits about 5 inches past the bumper, while the BackRoad's mast will be about 12 inches past that. So as long as your spare tire...

Because you have step thru style frames, I recommend the RockyMounts WestSlope 2 Bike Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting - Wheel Mount # RKY10222. Then I recommend the Cable Locks and Hitch Lock for RockyMounts WestSlope Bike Racks # RKY10224.

  • Comparing Yakima BackRoad and RidgeBack 4-Bike Hitch Bike Racks
Both the Yakima BackRoad # YA44FR and the Yakima RidgeBack # Y02458 are excellent bike racks but I think I'd choose the BackRoad over the RidgeBack to be honest. The RidgeBack has an easier installation method with the snap pin and tool-free anti-rattle, but the BackRoad is a newer model from Yakima and uses the new 7" spacing between the cradles. While this might not seem like a big deal, I've loaded up 4 bikes on the RidgeBack before and it was almost like putting a puzzle together. The...

  • Best Bike Rack for 4 Bikes on 2020 Toyota Highlander Hitch
Yes the factory Toyota hitches have issues with Thule bike racks but I have a couple options that will work. The Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack # Y02443-2 fits your 2020 Toyota Highlander. This is a well built wheel mount bike rack which means no frame contact on your bikes. Compared to a frame mount or hanging design it can more easily accommodate women's, kids and alternative style frames. You can tilt the bike rack away from the vehicle with bikes loaded to gain access to your hatch....

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a Bike Rack on a 2017 Jeep Patriot
I recommend using the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98836 for your 2017 Jeep Patriot because it gives you a 2" hitch receiver which means you have access to a wider variety of accessories (like bike racks) plus it has a matte black finish which looks more rugged and actually hides dents and scratches from road debris much better than the classic glossy black finish that comes on other hitches. If you don't already have a bike rack then I recommend going with the Yakima BackRoad...

  • Choosing Between Yakima Y02458 Ridgeback or YA44FR Backroad on 2017 BMW X3
The racks share many similarities as far as capacities and design goes, but in a nutshell I'd consider the # Y02458 RidgeBack to be an upgraded version of the # YA44FR BackRoad. The RidgeBack has several upgrades that make it easier to use, such as the speed knob anti rattle system which provides a locking knob at the front of the rack that takes all the slack out of the hitch/rack connection versus the threaded hitch pin on the BackRoad that you'll need to use a wrench to install/remove....

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and 4 Bike Rack for 2019 Honda Odyssey
We have exactly what you need to set your new Honda Odyssey up for adventures on the trails! Starting with the trailer hitch I strongly recommend the Draw-Tite Class III # 76170 because of its hidden-crosstube design that allows only the 2 inch receiver to be seen from the rear. This lets you maintain a sleek OEM appearance on your brand new van while also improving ground clearance for a bike rack (see attached image). The hitch has more than enough capacity for a loaded bike rack and...

  • How Heavy is the Curt Hitch for 2015 Nissan Xterra?
The Curt Hitch # 13514 is a great hitch for carrying bikes! The actual weight of the hitch itself is 28 lbs. Its shipping weight (with the box and the packaging) is 33 lbs. It has a tongue weight of 400 lbs which is more than enough for your bikes. I attached the install video if you want to check out how easy it is to install. If you're still looking for some 4-bike racks, I have some recommendations. For a platform-style rack, which I prefer since it's easier to mount/dismount bikes...

  • Recommended Yakima 4-Bike Rack to Clear Spare Tire on 2004 Toyota RAV4
When we installed the Draw-Tite # 75125 on a 2004 Toyota RAV4, we found that the rearward clearance distance between the hitch pin hole and the rear face of the spare tire was 10 inches. This means that you'd need a bike rack with a shank that has a hitch pin hole to closest portion of the rack upright distance greater than 10 inches. The Yakima RidgeBack # Y02458 shank is 11-1/2 inches from the pin hole to the upright, while the Yakima BackRoad, part # YA44FR offers 13-1/2 inches to...

We have a few options for you to consider, though the Yakima BackRoad 4-Bike Rack # YA44FR is not compatible with any type of hitch extender, per Yakima, and that includes the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483. The BackSwing is also only able to accept bike racks with a 2" shank, and not one like the BackRoad which has a 1-1/4" shank and uses an adapter for a 2" hitch.
