Yakima 8002445 HoldUp Bike Rack In Use

The Yakima HoldUp is a premium, tray-style bike rack that lets you carry 2 bikes using your vehicle's hitch. This rack is specifically designed to carry bikes with big tires and wide handlebars, but it will carry just about any bike, including those with wheels from 20" to 29", carbon frames, disc brakes, thru axles, or full suspensions.

Wheel-Mount Design for Easy Bike Loading

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Large Front Wheel Holders

The HoldUp is easy to load, even if your bikes have monster wheels. The deep, contoured front wheel cradles accommodate just about any wheel out there, and the pivoting arms with StrongArm technology ensure that your bikes are held firmly in place.

Yakima 8002445 HoldUp Bike Rack Ratcheting Arm

To load a bike, simply place your front wheel in the holder, rotate the pivoting arm up and over the wheel, and press down firmly on the ratcheting hook. To release the hook, simply press the built-in red button and slide the hook up and off your wheel.

Yakima 8002445 HoldUp Bike Rack Adjustable Rear Wheel Cradles

Large rear wheel holders allow the HoldUp to accommodate a wide variety of bike wheelbases. These wheel holders pivot front to back, adjusting automatically to your wheel size - no need for sliding and tightening. Secure the wheels in place with the ratcheting straps built into each holder.

Yakima HoldUp Ratcheting Arm No Frame Contact

Mounting bikes by the wheels helps prevent any scratches or scuffs to the paint. The ratcheting hooks are padded, however, so they won't mark your wheels. And the pivot mechanisms in the arms are overbuilt to ensure they keep functioning smoothly over a lifetime of hard use.

Fully Adjustability Bike Trays

Yakima 8002445 HoldUp Adjustable Bike Trays

The wheel trays on the HoldUp are fully adjustable to ensure that you have all the space you need when mounting bikes with mammoth handlebars, such as a 29er. To adjust a wheel tray, loosen the 4 bolts where the tray attaches to the rack base and slide the tray left or right to achieve the desired spacing. Retighten the bolts and you're ready to roll with optimum handlebar clearance and no fear of bike-to-bike contact during transport.

Complete Security

Yakima 8002443 HoldUp Bike Rack Built-in Cable Locks

The HoldUp has a cable lock built into the end of each pivoting arm. These cables loop through your bike frames and attach to posts on the bike rack arms to secure your bikes in place. The cables store in the arms when not in use.

Yakima 8002445 HoldUp Bike Rack Locking Hitch Pin

The rack also has a HitchLock hitch pin that allows you to lock the rack to your vehicle. The threaded pin also works as an anti-rattle device to reduce noise and movement of the rack when it's mounted in your trailer hitch receiver.

The cable locks and HitchLock hitch pin include keyed-alike Same Key System (SKS) lock cores. These cores can be swapped out to make all your Yakima products keyed alike.

Tilting Design and Compact Storage

Yakima 8002445 HoldUp Bike Rack Folded for Storage

The HoldUp stores more compactly than similar platform-style racks, and features a spring-loaded pin at the base that lets you fold the rack up against the rear of your vehicle when it's not in use. First rotate the front wheel holders inward and tilt the rear wheel holders inward, then rotate the pivot arms down and use the ratcheting hooks to secure the arms to the rear wheel holders. Once the arms are in place, pull the pin and fold the rack up against your vehicle.

Yakima 8002445 HoldUp Bike Rack Tilted for Rear Cargo Access

The same pin tilts the rack down, while fully loaded, so you can gain access to your vehicle's rear cargo area without having to unload your bikes.

I just installed this on Friday and we used it for a short trip to the bike shop. So far, it is not bad. I had to laugh; Yakima applied their logo upside-down! I read the directions at least 3x to be sure I didn't have them reversed...I did it right. The directions also show a logo on both, upper & lower rack. I guess they wanted to save some $$ ? Assembly was easy with just three steps. The hitch has a lock to lock it to the car, which is great, but the cover won't stay on. It takes 2 hands, one to hold the lock in place and the other to try to put the cover over the lock. It just pops off the second you release pressure. I will try again in warmer weather, then tape it on so hopefully it will mold to the lock and eventually stay put without the tape.
I am not convinced of the stability of the bikes, really. Going over bumps they do shake. For safety, we are going to add straps from the luggage rack and through the bikes, just in case.
I really like the cable locks to secure the bikes to the rack. With our old rack there really wasn't a way to lock the bikes to the rack, and I always worried when we were traveling and stopped for food.

From looking at your photos, you installed the top wheel tray assembly opposite of the instructions. The wheel strap is to your right, and pivot arm is to your left when it comes to the bottom wheel tray assembly. The sticker belongs on the bottom wheel tray when it is in the upright position as shown in our installed photos above. Also, stabilizing straps are recommended with this rack. You can purchase something like item # 18050.

Best bike rack ever! Solidly built, reliable, sturdy. Plus the customer service of this company is outstanding. They are knowledgeable, keep you informed, respond to emails quickly and satisfactorily. Definitely will continue being my go to company!

by:

As etrailer reminded me, I have had this thing for a year and it is awesome. I did a lot of research before buying and am certainly glad it steered me towards this product. My hatch just clears the rack when it is in the stowed (up) position and it just clears my handlebars in the tilted (down) position. Fits like a glove!

The bolt fits snugly and makes for a very quiet ride. I love the anti-theft bolt-end but I make sure to pull on it after installing because it is hard to tell for sure if it is on. Mine was not and I drove away, losing it. They're not super expensive, but are super back-ordered rn so I had to find one from MasterLock that fits. I actually take mine on and off a fair amount because I'm hauling stuff around and loading/unloading is much easier without the rack in place even with it all folded into the stowed position.

I've taken this rack across the country a few times (with and without bikes) and it has been great. I try not to exceed 90mph with a bike in the rack...

Two things to know:
1. When you are only carrying one bike you have to make certain that the other spot's ratcheting arm is as ratcheted-down as possible. I once had it slip and it was dragging in the roadway before someone started flashing lights at me and I caught it.
2. I use a Voile strap (elastic cargo strap) to hold my front tire down. See attached photo. If you don't, it is possible for the front wheel to roll back a little bit and loosen the fit. I don't know why Yakima hasn't made this change themselves but it's simple and makes your bike WAY more secure especially on winding roads.

by:

Solid and sturdy and holds up (pun intended) to a lot of abuse. I believe I've already had this product almost a year if not more and it is showing some signs of minor rust and I lost one of the red end caps but no issues. The locking mechanism works flawlessly... My only gripe with is that it's advertised to hold up to a 3" diameter tire without issue but my bike is a 29er with 2.5" tires and you really have to push down hard the locking arms to secure the bike properly. Also, it does fit 18" kid bikes as well.

by:

Great sweep of the attachment for lowered cars and can run as a one by system if one is all you need

This is the best rack. I have owned. Can’t recommend it more highly.

Took 5 1/2 months to receive the rack fuel to Covid 19. One of the rear cradle mounts had a broken strap mount, but Tiffany jumped right on the problem and I got a replacement within a week. Tiffany was awesome !!
Rack is great. I've used it a couple of times and love it. Bikes (mountain & road) are super secure and ride very well.
Very pleased with my purchase

Great customer service!

The 1st Yakama roof mounted bike rack I purchased lasted well over 15 years. I gave it up because the model didn't fit my new ride. This review is for a rear, hitch mounted, 2 bike system. Right out of the box the rack looked great. Making sure my bikes aren’t stolen when I travel is a big issue for me. So I made sure the rack locks into the hitch receiver and the bikes lock into the upright securely, all with the same key. Tilting the rack out of the way is easy, even with a load. Assembly was straightforward. All the tools required for assembly were provided in the package. It may have taken ½ an hour to put everything together. It folds up compactly when not in use. I did have to adjust the rear view reverse camera on my car a little to get the best picture. I look forward to years of use. I recommend this product.

by:

I m very happy with our Yakima bike carrier. Very easy to install, it only took me 15 min. Instructions are simple and it looks great. I tried our bikes on and off and it is fast, also feels great not needed to lift them up to the roof of the car as our previous carrier. The only reason for me to give 4 stars is that I have 29er mtb with in a large frame (19.5') and rocks a bit back and forth as its frame seems almost to big for the rack, I will use and extra strap (not included with the carrier) on the front wheel to solve the problem. Easy. Can't wait for our next bike trip!
As per the team at etrailer: they deserve a full 5 stars! Extremely well organised with excellent communication. I will definitely look them up again for my next buy and recommend them with no hesitation. Good job guys.

by:

I purchased the used installation model demo'd in the videos. Amazing deal! I could not find a better price for a used Yakima Holdup 2 hitch rack outside of etrailer.com. Arrived in excellent working condition, other than the normal wear that you would expect from a demo rack (this was listed in the description). Shipping was fast. The hitch rack installed perfectly on my 1.25" hitch. I could not be happier.

by:

Rack performs to expectation. Use it to carry two e-bikes (relatively heavy). The rear tire cup and strap could be more heavy duty- get's the job done, but I had to replace one of the cap/strap units because the spring clasp broke. I was quickly sent a replacement, at no cost, so I can confirm they stand behind the product. I would purchase again.

by:

This experience was fantastic!!! I received tracking information, confirmation of my order immediately and the product was delivered on time just as described. This is during a pandemic... where other retailers are taking much longer.
Absolutely first class service!!! 10 stars!!

THANK YOU FOR BEING AWESOME ETRAILER!!!

by:

I carry two heavy E-bikes on a Subaru Outback and this rack has worked great.

by:

Easy to assemble and looks great. Top quality , super fast shipping and fits the need for my bikes.

by:

Easy on/off rack to car and bike to rack

by:

Great bike rack. Easy to install and keeps the bikes stable on the back of the veicle.

by:

Took quite a while to receive. When I did, a small plastic piece that secures the wheel was broken. Did not notice this until loading bike for the first time. I emailed, but received no response. So I've had to use a bunji cord since day 1

  • Can I Purchase a Larger Bike Saddle for My Fat Tire Electric Bikes on My Yakima HoldUp # Y02445?
I have a solution for you. Unfortunately, I confirmed with my contact at Yakima that they do not make fat-tire cradles for the Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" Hitches # Y02445. The only other option for transporting your fat bikes is to purchase a rack that has cradles that are wide enough to fit your 4-1/2 inch wide tires. While this information may be understandable frustrating to hear, we do have some great bike racks that can carry 2 electric fat-tire bikes. For a great...

  • Can Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack with 1-1/4" Shank Be Used for 4-Bike Rack
Thanks for reaching out, Ray! The Yakima HoldUp Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # Y02445 isn't compatible with the 2-Bike Add-On because is has the 1-1/4" shank that isn't strong enough for a 4-bik setup. Yakima discontinued the HoldUp line of bike racks so the only way for you to use the Add-On is if you swap out the spine with the Replacement Spine # 8890277 so it fits with a 2" hitch that's more capable.

I recommend looking at the Yakima HoldUp 2 Bike Rack # Y02445. This is a great platform-style carrier that will allow you to transport up to 2 bikes at 60 pounds each. It features a wheel-mount design for easy loading and unloading and the rack can be tilted down for easy rear cargo access on your vehicle. It is compatible with Class II, 1-1/4 inch hitch receivers. I have an answer for you. Technically, we cannot recommend any bike rack to be used over the per-bike weight capacity or the combined weight capacity. The reason why is because the additional weight does have the potential to either damage the rack, the hitch receiver, or the vehicle itself. With the Thule T2 Pro XTS Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 1-1/4" Hitches, even though the per-bike weight capacity is 60 pounds, the overall weight capacity rating is 100 pounds total.
