T2 Classic for 1-1/4" Hitches

The Thule T2 Classic platform-style bike rack lets you carry 2 bikes using your vehicle's hitch. The rack is designed to carry bicycles of varying sizes and styles, and it can hold bikes with fat tires up to 5" wide. The bike trays adjust to optimize bike spacing and reduce bike-to-bike contact. The ratcheting arms and wheel trays secure your bikes by the wheels so there's no frame contact. The rack tilts down with bikes loaded so you can access your vehicle's rear cargo area, and it folds up when not in use.

Wheel-Mount Design for Easy Bike Loading

Ratcheting Wheel Hook

The rack allows you to quickly and easily load and carry 2 bicycles on the back of your vehicle. The ratcheting arms and front wheel cradles securely hold your bikes by the front wheels so there's no frame contact. Simply set your bike on the rack and pivot the upright arm up and over the front wheel. Then just ratchet the hook down so it firmly grips your wheel.

Wheel Hook Lock Core

The arms can also be locked in place with Thule One-Key System lock cylinders (TH512 - sold separately). One-Key System cylinders can be swapped out to make all of your Thule gear keyed alike.

Sliding Rear-Wheel Cradle

The sliding rear-wheel cradles allow the rack to accommodate bikes with wheelbases up to 48" long, and they accommodate tires up to 5" wide. The cradles include ratcheting, rubber straps to hold your bikes' rear wheels securely in place on the tray.

Regular Strap Length

For road bikes and mountain bikes insert the strap into the hole at the bottom of the cradle. Then run the strap along the side and over the top of the cradle.

Fat Tire Strap Length

For fat tire bikes insert the strap under the bracket on the side of the cradle. Then simply run the strap over the top of the cradle.

Fully Adjustable Bike Trays

Adjustable Bike Trays

The front and rear bike trays are fully adjustable to ensure you have enough space when mounting your bikes. Just loosen the 4 bolts where the tray attaches to the rack base, slide the tray front to back and side to side to achieve the desired spacing, and then tighten the bolts. This will prevent your bikes' handlebars from becoming tangled, and it eliminates the fear of bike-to-bike contact during transport.

Tilting and Folding Design

HitchSwitch Lever

The integrated HitchSwitch lever allows the T2 Classic to easily tilt. The rack tilts down with or without bikes loaded for convenient rear cargo area access.

Rack Tilts Up for Storage

It also folds up for storage when you're not transporting a bike. This is great for parking in places where space is limited such as a parking garage.

Hitch Lock and Anti-Rattle Device

Snug Tite Hitch Lock

The rack includes a SnugTite hitch lock and anti-rattle device. The hitch lock secures the rack to your hitch with the included One-Key System lock cylinder. And the threaded hitch pin eliminates movement and rattle in the hitch.

This bike rack has worked out perfectly for my husbands recumbent bike. Easy on and easy off compared to all the hassle of his previous one, makes a big difference when you get back from a long ride and are tired and all you want is to load the bikes and go!! The seller is easy to work with and responded to my questions and concerns promptly...would definitely recommend ordering from them. And the quality of their products are spot on. 255388

Once again, etrailer has done an awesome job. I’ve bought a few trailer hitches for my vehicles from them and they have all been awesome. From the start of the process to the follow up after delivery, I have no doubt that they really care that you are 100% satisfied with the product and the service. As far as the Thule bike carrier goes, NICE! Built very well and delivered on the day promised with no damage. Quality product, great price. THANKS!!!! 473823

Overall this is a really good bike rack. I installed it on a 2010 Volkwsagen EOS. The best part about the rack is how easy it is to get bikes on and off, literally 20 seconds per bike once you've done it a couple of times. Unfortunately I can't fold the rack into the upright position with my car, probably because my trailer hitch is installed quite far back from the bumper. I'm not terribly concerned about that though. If you're an EOS owner you know that the trunk lid opens backwards when you operate the roof. I found that there is JUST ENOUGH room to do this with bikes on the rack if you tilt the rack down AND make sure that the pedal on the inside bike is at the 6 o'clock position. Of course you should test it with your own installation to make sure. Installing and removing the rack isn't terribly easy, I found that I had to pretty much lay down on the ground under my car to reach the bolt. 257778

It's a good solid bike rack overall. The biggest negative issue is the release mechanism for raising and lowering the rack. It's difficult to get it to fully disengage. Makes raising and lowering frustrating. Perhaps that's why this model was discontinued. 373471

Comments

George, this rack has not been discontinued, but replaces TH917XTR. If you are having a problem with raising and lowering your rack, please give us a call at 1-800-298-8924. We would love to help!

Description is confusing...three locks are included which secure the bikes. Two more locks are required, to provide extra security but the to pack lock keys will not match. A set of six extra locks are required to make the hitch a on key system. 32012

Comments

I bought 2 additional locks that matched my existing locks

Thanks for the response Glenn, you are correct if you have an existing Thule key number we can usually match additional lock cores to minimize the need for additional keys.

Great product. We just got a new convertible and I could not use the roof mount or trunk mount. Using the bikes was important. Taking care of the bikes is important too. This bike rack is really the best I have ever had. It is extremely easy to use. I like that it has built in locks. I can use the hard top convertible on the VW Eos if I only have one bike positioned outward. It also works with no bikes installed. I could not be happier with this product and the incredible price, fast shipping and overall value from etrailer.com. 27662

Would give it a 5 star, but the clearance on the wheel holder would not let me get it into place with my Wendego 2.0 because of the quick release clamp. Since I can't swap sides with it the work around is to remove the quick release axle, raise the tire holder, put the axle back in and tighten then lock the wheel in place. On the positive side, don't have to lock it since they won't be able to figure it out very fast. Overall, great workmanship. Heavy duty with good clear directions. 546431

I have to get a trailer hitch extension in order for the bike rack to fold up when not in use. Definitely will go through etrailer for this item. 403771

Thanks for your review, Mike. Please note that using a hitch extender for your bike rack will reduce the hitch tongue weight by 50 percent.

The rack is excellent, very easy to use. Two things any buyer should know, it is designed to be left on your car all the time. I take it on and off rather than just flipping it up because of garage space requirements. Not a huge deal, but you can tell it's designed to be flipped up and left on. The other things worth noting is you need to be careful if you've got a flat tire, the bike will be very loose if the tire is deflating in the rack. Again, not a huge deal, just something to be aware of. Overall I love this rack and would recommend highly for the ease of use (easy on, easy off with the bike) and clear quality of the design/build 584911

Unfortunately I didn't think about the fact that our bikes have fenders on them and this carrier is a wheel clamp design. I had to return the rack as there is no real option to use when the bikes have fenders. The Rack itself seemed fantastic. I just did not get it for the right bike design 424116

We were very impressed with he solid construction of this bike rack. I have an unusual reclining bike and this allows me to cinch down the tires securely. Also LOVE the additional cable lock. Make sure you match all the locks so you only need one key. Very easy to tilt the rack down for access to the trunk of my vehicle. This was an expensive purchase but worth every penny because of the quality of the rack. 218133

The staff (Michael) at etrailer.com took the time to help research the different hitch style bike racks to see which one would fit my Jeep correctly, since with the rear tire most wouldn't, he took the time to send me video's of each on how they work. It fits perfect with the adaptor and I couldn't be happier. Thank you etrailer.com for your help and patience in getting me the correct item. 96044

I am 23 and was able to put this all together by myself. I put it on a 2013 Honda CRV. When the bars for the bikes were put on according to the directions, the drivers side wheel well could not clear my bumper without rubbing it. Therefore, I measured the distance between the two bars and moved them down away from the vehicle. This worked well and fixed the problem. I can take this off and put it on all by myself and put it on all by myself. 78492

Great product, reliable and safe. Easy to operate and the locking system is effective. The installation instructions were a little awkward in that the mfg. reverses some of the parts in order to fit all the pieces into the delivery box. So read instructions carefully before dismantling. Be careful when "dropping" the carrier in order to open trunk door - the weight of the bicycles quickly drops the carrier into the final locked position. Make sure to tighten the bolt connecting the carrier to the hitch - reduces any vibration while driving 59990

Got to assemble it on a vehicle. The only brain dead moment I had was with the Keys. There IS a blank key, an Installation Key to put the key cylinders in place. At the END of the instructions, they show you the two keys. Oh, and the exploded, list of items shows the two keys. I'm an engineer... so when i doubt... go read the instructions carefully. 42056

Got this rack after finding out Yakima didn't make one to fit my hitch....overall seems good but heavy. What else would you expect from a Thule product? Easy to assemble and ready to use! For the price I paid, Thule should have included the locks for the lockdown bars! I am very pleased with the product! We’ll built and designed to last! Went by local bike shop today to pick up two bikes being serviced. Bike repair person saw the Thule platform rack and said “couldn’t have bought a better bike rack than a Thule product! 551460

Installed the Thule T2 Classic onto a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. I am a data analyst, so all I do all day is work on a computer and have no real experience with tools, but the installation was easy. Before installing the bike rack, I would load two bikes into the back of the SUV, and it was becoming annoying. With the bike rack, I am able to quickly load and unload bikes. 388692

After looking at several bike racks and doing comparisons we chose the Thule t2. We loved the versatility and ease of operation as well as the built in locks. My wife can operate it with ease even when I am not there. She has even been known to install it on the car herself when I am not home. We bought the two bike version but it is easy to make it a four bike with the purchase of the add on which it is already made for without any modification. For us it was the best one regardless of the cost. I also love that it doesn't clamp down on any part of the frame. 378692

Review from a similar Thule T2 Classic in Hitch Bike Racks

Was pretty easy to assemble, but when putting on the plastic wheel cups, the pre-punched holes in the square tubing where you mount them were not punched correctly. There are two slightly different sized holes and ours were punched backwards. We had to use a punch to widen the one hole slightly to allow the cups to be mounted in correct orientation. Not a big deal, but certainly not a step that should have had to be done. If you don't pay attention to the pictures, and your holes are punched incorrectly, you will end up installing your wheel cups backwards simply because that is the only way they will fit in the holes. Also, fat tire bikes will fit in the wheel cups, but the strap to hold the back wheel down is not long enough to go through the wheel and be strapped in. Either the air needs taken out of the back wheel (maybe, we haven't actually tried that yet), or some other tie-down strap would need to be used. Fit the road bikes perfectly - very sturdy. In addition, the mechanism for folding up the rack when not in use is hard to operate. The lever doesn't completely free the "pegs" from the slots to allow folding without some jerking. However, we are pleased with the rack so far and will be using it on its maiden voyage this weekend. 429337

Review from a similar Thule T2 Classic in Hitch Bike Racks

I really have no complaints about this rack. What I can say is you get what you pay for. I first tried out a less expensive rack from etrailer and it did not fit my girls bikes well and the construction I was disappointed in. But etrailer took back the old one and I upgraded and spend about an additional $350 more and got the Thule - which I have always been very satisfied with. I tried to save a little money for which it only created additional down time and disappointment. With this rack you wont make that mistake. My only complaint is it helps to have two people fit this rack into your receiver. It is like a Sherman Tank - which is great for feeling confident in keep your bikes in tack - but lifting out of garage and onto the back of my trailer can be a little bit of work if doing it by yourself. Thanks etrailer for your great Customer Service and help with the replacement! 395868

My order was handled in a timely manner. I ordered the product one evening, the product was shipped the next morning, and the product was received the next day. The product ordered was a Thule bike carrier (I also ordered a trailer hitch the same evening and also received it the same day as the carrier). Both products were as advertised and fit my car and functioned properly. This was my first experience with etrailer and, if needed, would use them again. I am very satisfied. 385661

Review from a similar Thule T2 Classic in Hitch Bike Racks

Overall I really like the bike hitch. If there was any down side I would possibly point to the locking bar that engages when you change positions. It doesn't always engage fully unless you play with the rack some either by lifting or shaking it side to side. Not a major problem though. Unless I am missing something, I would like to see some locking device that locks the add on to the front two bike section. It bolts on with two bolts that could be unscrewed and the whole back section removed. Just an added note, one of those 12mm hex head bolts were missing from my hardware packet. It looked as if the package had been opened and the bolt possibly taken out sometime before shipment. I did call customer service and have another bolt coming in the mail. Once the weather warms up I hope to send pics of the rack installed with bikes loaded. Thanks for a great product! I hope to get years of enjoyment out of it. 498127

Review from a similar Thule T2 Classic in Hitch Bike Racks

Thule makes a very sturdy bike carrier. I do have a couple of minor issues, however. First when assembling the product, if you follow the instructions and slide the cross bars over the main bar with the clamps already attached loosely,, it scrapes up the Thule logo on the main bar (which is just stick on vinyl). You really need to position the cross bars on the main bar where you want them, then attach their mounting clamps. The second issue was a little more serious. Pulling up on the unlocking lever to fold the rack down, the “ear” on the back side of the right side locking notch was too high. The square locking pin could not pulled up high enough to release it from the notch on that one side, no matter how firmly you pulled in the unlocking lever. The solution was to grind down the top of that ear just a few thousanths of an inch so the locking pin would clear. The only problem now is the top of that ear now has a small rust spot on it where I had to grind down the metal and remove their super tough powder coat finish. 555193

Review from a similar Thule T2 Classic in Hitch Bike Racks

Good solid rack for carrying mountain bikes with fat tires and or unique frame configurations. My Kuat hanging rack work for my Farley 5 but did not fit my wife's new Fuel 8 Ex frame angle. E- Trailer had a Classic T2 that was lightly used-installation only, for a nice discount. 1. Installation. Never a fan of Thule instructions. Find an install video and don't waste your time with Thule's. All in all assembly and installation is not too bad. 2. Bikes. Holds my Farley with 26" x 4. tires and the Fuel EX with 27.5plus x 2.80" tires. You will need to figure out how to reinsert rear wheel strap to fit. If the instructions show this then they do not explain the need. Both of these wheel sizes need to the strap in the "upper" slot to fit. makes sense once you see it. 3. Rack Function. Tilts easily though the Pro is more civilized in this function. The rear hatch on my 2012 Sante Fe easily clears. I like that you can slide the bike position to the left or right with just loosening some hex bolts. This helps having the bikes pedal to pedal and touching at that point. Its a very solid rack and is heavy but that is OK as it's not like you should expect to be installing this type of rack with every use then remove the rack when done. Etrailer as usual provided great service and delivery. 331485

  • Trailer Hitch and Tilting Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta
  • Yes, you can put a hitch on your 2017 Volkswagen Jetta. You can use # 24926. This is a Class I hitch, which is all that is available for the Jetta, which means you are limited to a maximum of 2 bikes on a bike rack that is rated for use on a Class I hitch. The only Thule bike racks that will work with a Class I hitch and that can tilt down with bikes loaded are the T2 Pro, # TH9035XT or # TH9035XTS, or T2 Classic # TH9045. If it doesn't have to be a Thule bike rack you could use the...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon with Maximum Bumper Clearance
  • If you have the Thule T2 Classic 2 Bike Platform Rack part # TH9044 with the 2" receiver then you will want to use the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13206. If you have the Thule T2 Classic 2 Bike Platform Rack part # TH9045 with the 1-1/4" receiver then you will want to use the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C12136. None of the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receivers we have for your Outback Wagon will provide enough clearance for the Thule T2 to clear the rear bumper in their upright...

  • Can 1-1/4" Shank on Thule T2 Classic 2 Bike Rack be Converted to 2" Shank
  • Since all of the parts for the 1-1/4" Thule T2 Classic # TH9045 and the 2" Classic # TH9044 are all the same except for the hitch and backbone assembly, you can use the Replacement Shank # 753-3581 with the 1-1/4" Classic that you have to convert it over to the 2" version. I confirmed this with my contact at Thule. The current pricing is listed on the product page.

  • Thule T2 Bike Rack with 1-1/4 Inch Shank Compatibility with 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver
  • You are correct that a 2 inch hitch receiver is a better option when available for your vehicle. The ability to use a wider variety of accessories is one of the biggest draws but they are normally rated for higher capacities as well when compared to a 1-1/4 inch receiver. Your Thule T2 with 1-1/4 inch shank similar to the newer T2 Classic # TH9045 will be able to use your 2 inch receiver. Most racks that are designed for use with both 2 inch and 1-1/4 inch hitch receivers will use...

  • Compatibility of Thule T2 Bike Rack with 2016 Toyota Prius
  • For your 2016 Toyota Prius, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24944. The distance from the hitch pin hole to outer most part of the bumper is about 3 inches. The Thule T2 Classic 2 Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" Hitches - Tilting # TH9045 when folded for storage will only give you about 1/2 inch of clearance. The Thule T2 Pro XTS 2 Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" Hitches - Tilting - Silver # TH9035XTS is also compatible and will give...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Adapter Compatible with Thule T2 9045 Bike Rack and 2 Inch Receiver
  • For your Thule T2 Classic 2 Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" Hitches # TH9045 there is not a an adapter compatible for a 2 inch hitch from Thule and they also don't have the replaceable shank to upgrade to the 2 inch receiver. The best adapter to fit your truck is the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter - 2" to 1-1/4" - 4" Long # C45770. This will allow you to use the hitch lock that came with your bike rack and then you will use a separate hitch lock like # 63232 to secure and lock the...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2015 Lexus IS 250 for a Bike Rack and Light Trailer
  • I recommend the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver, part # 24923, for your 2015 Lexus IS 250. It's confirmed to fit both the sedan or convertible models. The hitch is a Class I, 1-1/4 inch receiver so you need to make sure the bike rack you use fits the Class I. The bike rack I recommend is the very popular Thule T2, part # TH9045. The T2 is a platfrom rack that carries up to 2 bikes at 50 pounds each. it can be folded up out of the way when you're not using it as well as tilted away...

I've included a video of our demo team installing the Curt Class III hitch onto a 2017 Lexus RX350, and then installing a Thule T2 Classic on the same vehicle and performing all of the T2 Classic's features and uses on the vehicle. • Recommended Bike Rack for 2016 VW Beetle Convertible
  • The best way to transport a bike with your 2016 VW Beetle Convertible is with a trailer hitch and hitch-mounted rack. There is actually not a trunk-mounted carrier available that is designed to work on your convertible model Beetle but even if there was I would still recommend the hitch-mounted solution. A hitch-mounted carrier eliminates any concern for scratches or scuffs that a trunk-mounted rack might leave behind since nothing will actually be touching the Beetle. A trunk-mounted...

  • Will the Thule T2 Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Fit a 2013 Toyota Sienna
  • Yes, you can use the Thule T2 Classic bike rack, # TH9045, on your 2013 Toyota Sienna. This particular rack fits in a Class I or II trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch hitch. If you have a 2 inch hitch, Class III or higher, on your Sienna then you would use # TH9044 which is the same rack only for 2 inch hitches.

  • If the trailer hitch on your Prius C was manufactured by Curt, their warranty policy requires that a strap like the # 18050 be used for all non trailer loads like bike racks or cargo carriers.Draw-Tite hitches have so such stipulation. The support strap would use a hook to attach to the vehicle at the seam between the top of the rear hatch and the roof. If you click the provided link, you can see how the strap is installed. • I called my contact at Thule and they said there is no adapter available for your T2 Classic bike carrier. I asked about replacing the stinger for a 2-inch and they said that is not available for the T2 either. I wish I had better news but unfortunately there is not anything available to fit the T2 to a 2-inch receiver. • Can Thule T1 1-Bike Platform Rack be Tilted Away From Vehicle
  • The Thule T1 1-Bike Platform Rack # TH9041 referenced in your question cannot actually be tilted away from the vehicle to allow for easy rear cargo access. The carrier can be folded up against the vehicle for storage when not in use, but not back from its flat position. For a similar carrier that can be tilted away from the vehicle, I recommend looking at the Thule T2 Classic 2-Bike Platform Rack # TH9045 for 1-1/4 inch receivers or # TH9044 for 2 inch receivers. • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for a Toyota Prius to allow Cargo Area Access

And then for a bike rack that will allow you to have access to the rear of your vehicle I would recommend you get a Thule T2 Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier # TH9045. • Comparison of Thule T2 Bike Rack and Swagman Semi 2.0
  • The Thule T2 Bike Rack part # TH9045 and the Swagman Semi 2.0 # S64686 are very similar. Both only contact the bikes loaded on them by the wheel and both are platform racks. The biggest difference is that the Semi is a little bit lighter in weight and comes with the ability to be used in either a 1-1/4 inch or 2 inch hitch. Either would work well but I would recommend the Swagman as it is lighter, works on both hitch sizes, comes with hitch locks, and costs less. I attached a couple...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2007 Toyota Matrix and Converting 2 inch T2 Bike Rack to 1-1/4 inch
  • The thing about hitch adapters/extenders like the part # MT70355 that you referenced is that they reduce the capacity of the hitch they are used on by 50 percent. The hitch you referenced part # 24812 has a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs so it would only have a 100 lb capacity with that extension. The T2 part # TH9044 that you referenced weighs 60 lbs so you would only have 40 lbs of capacity for bikes with the setup you referenced. Your best solution would be to convert your Thule...

  • Bike Rack Cover Recommendation for a Thule T2 for Fat Bikes
  • The bike cover part # B01571 would work well as a bike cover for your Thule T2 for Fatbikes part # TH9045. Normally we only recommend using bike covers with larger vehicles since a smaller vehicle will have it's taillights more likely to be blocked by the cover and because there tends to be more wind at the rear of a smaller vehicle that could potentially whip the cover around on the highway.

  • Will the Thule T2 Classic Fit a 2017 Subaru Outback with Factory Trailer Hitch
  • The hitch pin hole on the factory 2017 Subaru Outback trailer hitch is much too close to the end of the receiver to safely use many bike racks including the Thule T2 Classic # TH9045. What I recommend is the Lets Go Aero BikeWing-2 2-Bike Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - horizontal Wheel Mount Item # B01311. It has a threaded pin hole and a regular pin hole. You would need to use the regular pin hole to allow more of the shank to fit in the receiver. Then you would use a regular pin #...

On the T2 Classic # TH9045 you could just not install the outer platform parts but the shank that it mounts to will still be present right in the middle.

  • Platform Bike Rack Recommendation for Fat Bike
  • I have a solution for you, but the Rhino Rack Bike Rack part # RRRBC048 that you referenced would not be the platform bike rack to use for carrying a fat bike. Instead you would want the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE2 2-Bike Rack for Fat Bikes # HR1400Z-85-FB. The wheel cradles of this rack can accommodate a tire that is up to 5 inches in width so it would work well for you. If you need a wheel mount bike rack that only touches the bikes at the wheel you would want the part # TH9044...

  • How to Get a Thule T2 for 1-1/4 Inch Hitches to Fit a 2 Inch Trailer Hitch Receiver
  • I do have a solution for you but adapter # 853-7489 does not fit the T2, # TH9045. What you can use (and what is basically the same thing only it doesn't attach to the bike carrier) is a reducer sleeve, # HT02. Pin the reducer into the hitch receiver and then you can place the 1-1/4 inch shank from the T2 in and you'd be good to go.

  • Can Thule T2 Bike Racks be Used in a 1-1/4 and 2 Inch Trailer Hitch
  • The Thule T2 # TH9045 (917XTR has been discontinued) does not come with an adapter to fit a 2 inch hitch but all you would need is a reducer sleeve like part # HT02. The T2 is actually now available in some different versions. There is the T2 Classic # TH9045 and the T2 Pro, # TH9035XTS. The Classic is more like the 917XTR but the Pro is an all-new design. The new versions also would need to use a reducer to fit a 2 inch hitch. For a similar platform style bike rack that does come...

  • How to Convert a T2 Bike Rack for 1-1/4 inch Hitch to 2 inch Hitch
  • You can convert your Thule T2 Bike Rack part # TH9044 to basically be a TH9045 by simply replacing the shank and backbone assembly of your current rack with a # 753-3709. I spoke to my contact at Thule and she said that this is the only way to accomplish this. I asked about the use of a sleeve adapter like part # HT02 and she said she was aware that they work for some customers, but since they haven't tested it they can't say for certain if it would be safe.

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2017 Subaru Outback with Factory 1-1/4 Inch Trailer Hitch
  • If the trailer hitch on your 2017 Subaru Outback is the factory hitch then that limits your bike rack options. The issue is that the hitch pin hole on the Subaru hitch is much to close to the receiver opening to use most bike racks safely; especially platform racks that are heavier than hanging racks. The best bike rack option that will work with that hitch is the BikeWing # B01311 which does hold the bikes by the wheels. The other option, provided the factory hitch is not welded on,...

Bike racks at minimum will add about a foot to the back of a vehicle when installed. When we installed the Thule T2 Bike Rack part # TH9045 on a similar Soul as yours we found it added right at 12 inches when folded up. You will want to check with your owner's manual or with you dealership to find the hitch tongue weight capacity for your 2014 Mazda 3 Hatchback. Many times hitches have a tongue weight capacity higher than the vehicle tongue weight capacity so you want to make sure you do not exceed the lower rated component. The hitch I recommend...
