Features to know about

Stable Support for Heavy Rides: 60 lb Capacity per Bike

Built for e-bikes, fat tires, and mountain rigs, the MonoRail carries up to 60 lbs per bike—120 lbs total—without flex or sway. The steel and aluminum frame with black powder coat keeps strength high and corrosion low, while the 2" shank fits snugly with its threaded anti-rattle hitch pin. At 38 lbs, it’s solid but manageable, giving your heavier bikes a secure ride every time.

RockyMounts MonoRail installed into vehicle hitch with threaded anti-rattle hitch pin shown.

Protects Paint and Frames: Wheel-Only Mounting System

The ratcheting arms secure bikes by the front wheels, keeping carbon frames and custom finishes free of contact. With pivoting rear cradles and ratcheting straps (including extenders for fat tires up to 5"), bikes stay locked in tight without pressure on the frame. It’s a clean hold that works across different wheelbases up to 48", so every setup loads safely and evenly.

Rear Access Without Unloading: Front-Mounted Tilt Lever

Grabbing your gear shouldn’t mean unloading your bikes. The front-mounted release lever tilts the MonoRail down—loaded or empty—to open the rear cargo area. Flip the same lever up, and the rack folds compactly against the vehicle for parking or storage. It’s a small touch that makes a big difference mid-trip or in tight spaces.

Security Built In: Locking Hitch and Cable System

The MonoRail comes ready to lock down your investment. A keyed-alike cable lock secures both bikes, while the hitch lock snaps over the pin to keep the rack itself safe. One key handles both points, making it quick to secure or remove everything when you’re done riding.

RockyMounts MonoRail built-in cable lock securing bikes to the rack for added theft protection.

Expandable for More Rides: Optional 1-Bike Add-On

When another rider joins the crew, the MonoRail grows with you. Add the optional 1-bike extension (sold separately) to carry a third bike without swapping racks. The modular setup keeps your system streamlined, whether it’s a solo trip or a full-family ride day.

by:

So far this bike rack has exceeded my expectations. Of course, the ease and amount of reviews and details from trailer was awesome. I needed a rack for 2 e-bikes and after considerations I selected the RockyMounts monorail, because of its ease to load and it's quality solid construction. We have already used it twice and have not been disappointed. It folds/unfolds easily and mounting bikes really only required 2 hands. There are no straps or cables getting in the way or snagged and to finsh securing bikes is easy and satisfying. You don't need to be a body builder or a ninja to handle the RockyMount Monorail bike rack, my 125 lbs wife can set 2 bikes before I get my helmet off and truck started.

by:

This rack is really, good. The only thing i add to make it better is small strap that holds the front wheel to the front wheel bracket. I never had a problem with it, but i like to make sure it is secure. It is a solid bike rack and worth every penny. I would buy this over the Kuat version any day.

by:

I ordered it for my girlfriend and she HAD to use it the 2nd day because she was so excited. It wasn't hard to build, there were only 3 main pieces but 5 total and the tools come with the kit. Her first test go went great, she was extremely happy with it and that she could finally get into the trunk of her SUV with the bikes still on the bike. Only concern is the locking mechanisms, they are cheap so I'll find a better way to lock the rack and bikes to the vehicle. Otherwise, as always, thanks for the great service etrailer. I would purchase again if needed!

by:

Good mount over-all. Item was delivered without the packing straps. Not sure if the package was opened prior to shipping. There were no missing parts. The mount seems to function normally. I do have one complaint - the mount is not level when attached to my Ridgeline 2" hitch. My hitch is in perfect condition - unused prior to the purchase of this mount. The mounting bolt for the hitch is fully tight, but still the mount is crooked to right by 1 inch. Oh well - not a deal breaker.

by:

Exceptionally solid hitch mount / tray platform type bicycle carrier. I
The instructions were very clear and complete - with one exception of the the tray straps and strap extenders (not shown/mentioned). Some basic assembly was required - again the directions were very clear and everything need was supplied in the package. I took my time and it only took 15 minutes.
The bike rack is outstanding in design, quality of materials, construction and function. It's very solid in all 3 positions (carrying bikes, laid 'down' to open the tailgate, and 'stowed' in the up/close position when not carrying bikes.
I've had bike racks from other 'big name' vendors - this Rocky Mounts rack is much better, and less expensive.

by:

Looks like a well made product. The instructions are LESS than adequate. Items required for assembly of the product are NOT identified in the parts packaging so you would know what part to select without measuring bolts lengths. Extra parts are not identified as "spare / Extra". There are no comments / instructions for the installation and use of the bicycle locking cable. OVERALL I AM GIVING THIS ITEM 4 .

After much research, I purchased a Rockymounts MonoRail2 rack from etrailer.com. They represent the product well and were a pleasure to deal with. Their videos are a good complement to Rockymounts own.

The packing of the product is great. The hardware is packaged in the sequence in which it is used. Everything went together smoothly with one exception, fastening the end cap into the end of the rear load arm. The outer screw went in fine; the inner one would not start. I removed the end cap and found a burr – or misalignment – in the hole in the load arm. I used a small round file to clear it, after which it went together OK. A rubber mallet is helpful to install the end caps.

I mounted our bikes to check for any interference problems and found none. We haven’t transported them yet but – from everything I’ve seen – I made the right choice with the MonoRail2.

by:

Kelly was very helpful when it came to picking out this product. Trailer videos quite helpful too, but they may want to address the best way to see if bicycles align when mounted

by:

Very nice product. Fits the 2" receiver tightly and does not allow much movement of the rack while secure on any vehicle it's connected to. eBikes fit on the rack very securely only allowing minimal movement. Very easy to secure the eBikes without issue(s).

Works GREAT!! eBikes stay secure w minimal movement. Highly recommend!!

by:

It was very easy to assemble the MonoRail 2. All of the parts were in the box and nothing was damaged. I would recommend etrailer to purchase from as they were the only ones to have this bike rack. Also I would recommend the MonoRail as well.

I really like the Rockymounts Monorail 2 but I also have a slight problem with it as well. But the problem that I have is going to go will all hitch type racks. The problem that I have is with the backup sensors so I bought the 53201 Curt Auxiliary LED Indicator Lights and some magnets top attach it to the rack. If I were to say anything is that I think all bike racks should come with something to plug to prevent the sensors from going off. there then that the rack is gray and I have had no problems with it at all. This is a great rack for the money.

Thanks for sharing the photos, Eric! It’s really helpful to know that you can still open the tailgate with the rack installed. That’s something a lot of people ask about, so I’ll definitely keep this one in mind for future questions.

It was delivered broken. The one plastic piece that the tire sits on, was broken in half. I called to find out if the part could be sent to me. Spoke to a lady at etrailer and she said she would get back to me, never happened. I should of sent it back at that time..

by:

Well built, solid bike rack. Like the additional strap extensions for fat bikes. Holds bike well. Only minor issue was that instructions did not reference the rear wheel straps, but easy to figure out. I like that the rack tilt allows access to the rear hatch of my Subaru Forester.

working out great. Had issue with partial melt of one of the shepards hook melting due to proximity to my car exhaust. Able to get new part from manufacturer, repositioned hook, and all has been well since

Fast and easy order process. Fast shipping and delivery. Assemble. Installation and usage videos made this a breeze to complete.

This thing is rock solid. Once I figured out the directions and put it on my 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee is was so impressed with how stable it was. With two hybrid bikes on the platform rack it didn't even wiggle in the slightest! The only negative comment I can make was in lack of information in the directions. I had the platforms backwards and didn't know it until I tried to fold the rack completely up. I reviewed the directions again and no mention or illustration is available. However the fix wasn't that hard and it now functions exactly like the videos. Customer service from etrailer was remarkable though both times I called I thought the wait time was a little long. I would recommend this product and this retailer to anyone. Great service, great product!

Have had this product for a year now and I stand by my earlier review. By far one of the best if not the best bike rack on the market. We drove from Indianapolis to Upstate New York last fall and the rack performed great. Would recommend this product to anyone.

by:

I received my new rack yesterday and assembled and installed it today.
It’s a really solid product and the quality and finish are a step up from my kuat, which broke down after about 8 years of steady use.
The assembly was a bit more involved than I remember from my last rack, and the instructions that are provided by the manufacturer are not as helpful as I expected. Fortunately, the e-trailer assembly video was awesome. It walked me through step-by-step and explained very nicely which hardware to use for each specific part (which the Rocky Mounts instructions fell short on). One of the small screws that was used to secure one of the load arm end caps would not thread, but I just left it off and it doesn’t seem to affect function.
This rack fits pretty tight to the rear of my 2025 Rav4 hybrid when it is folded up, but it gives adequate clearance when bikes are attached and the rear gate clears my mt bikes easily when the rack is tilted backwards. I had not checked compatibility with my vehicles, but it seems to fit nicely.

by:

Strong and stable for its weight. Easy to assemble, mount, use, and dismount.

by:

2nd RockyMounts I've owned, great stuff.

by:

I installed and have made test drives with two bikes mounted on the bike rack and it does a great job holding and keeping the bikes secure. Installation was not hard, but if you have sockets and rachet for the allen screws/bolts your install will go easier and faster. Happy overall with the Bike Rack.

by:

Apparently front tire lost pressure allowing front retaininer to collapse. Bike fell and was held by rear wheel strap causing extensive damage to the front of the bike

by:

I’ve used the Rocky Mounts Bike Rack two times since I received it. It is like a rock! Stepping back a bit I was initially interested in a Yakima bike rack. I watched the first videos demonstrating the real world use of this rack as well others. I wanted a rack that was rated for weight of my e-bike, a class 3 Trek Domane + (33lbs.). When I viewed the Rocky Mounts rack video I realized it was a better rack for my needs. It was an easy rack to assemble for anyone who has some mechanical background. The directions are clear with illustrations to assist with the construction of the rack. I’m impressed with this rack. It is solid! There are no structural issues with or without the bike on the rack. Once secured into the receiver there are no squeaks, rattles or other noises that emanate from this unit. If you have a heavy bike, this rack may be an option for you. There is a negative though, the bike has to be lifted into the rack. It does not have ramps to assist with the installation of the bike. For me lifting 35 to 50 lbs. is not an issue. If this rack did have ramps, I woudn’t use them anyway. This bike rack is a good value for anyone who has a bike that does not weigh more than 60 lbs. max and don’t mind lifting the bike into the rack!

by:

i bought this for my wife. She had the same rack with the 11/4 hitch. she loved it so much that when she bought a toyota RAV-4 plug in hybrid in January I installed a 2" hitch. She loves how easy it is to laod her bike amd to fold it away when not in use.

by:

I bought this Rocky Mounts bike rack for transporting a MTB and an E-Bike. It's a standard platform rack with hook for the front wheel and strap for the rear. It's very heavy and solid, and so far I've had no issues with it.

I do want to mention one little snafu with the installation. There is an end cap that bolts onto each of the load arms to prevent the hook from sliding off the end of the arm. Each end cap is secured by two bolts, which is overkill for this little part that bears no weight. Due to what I think is a manufacturing flaw, the second bolt will not engage with the load arm. I eventually gave up and secured the caps with a single bolt. I don't expect any problems, since one bolt should be sufficient to keep them in place.

by:

The mount is super solid, very easy to load a bike on it too. I got the 2” version and it mounted in super well and it’s nice that it comes with 2 locks, 1 for the hitch bolt and 1 for the bike lock. Great mount and would buy it again! The tilt function makes getting into the rear hatch super nice as well! 10/10 would recommend!

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver to Fit a 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon
I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "direct fit" because all three of the Class III trailer hitch receivers we carry for your 2014 Subaru Outback are custom made and designed for your vehicle. The hitch that has the most factory-like look is the Ecohitch, part # 306-X7162. Once installed all you see is the open receiver tube under the rear bumper of your Subaru. Take a look at the picture I attached. The downside to this hitch is the install requries the bumper to be temporarily removed...

Hey David, your RockyMounts MonoRail 2 bike rack # RKY10004 will fit and work great in the Curt hitch part # C94WR. When this hitch is installed there will be 3-1/4 inches from the center of it's hitch pin hole out to the furthest point on the rear bumper so that would mean you'd have an inch of clearance available for it to fit and clear. The Curt hitch itself is rated much higher, but your RAV4 is the limiting factor here at around 150 lbs of tongue weight unless you have the Adventure trim. I took a look at both your Aventon step-thru e-bikes and the RockyMounts MonoRail Bike Rack for 2 Bikes - 2" Hitches # RKY10004 appears like it'll work just fine for you. This bike rack can accommodate two 60-lbs fat tire (5" wide) e-bikes, so there's more than enough capacity to handle your 52-lbs and 54-lbs e-bikes with 2" wide tires. Also with this rack being a wheel mounted rack, it'll also be compatible with step-thru bikes so there'll be no need for an adapter.

  • Best Mid-Range Platform Wheel Mount Bike Rack with Locks
The RockyMounts MonoRail # RKY10004 is a solid choice for a bike rack and I'd go with it over the Curt Bike Rack # C89JR (the same as 18088) any day of the week. Curt isn't a huge bike rack manufacturer so I'm not very confident in their recreational products to be honest - when it comes to towing though, Curt is right at the top with others. • Comparing RockyMounts MonoRail and Split Rail for Carrying Pace Aventon 500
The main difference between the SplitRail # RKY11404 and MonoRail # RKY10004 is that the MonoRail can carry bikes with 5" wide tires; the SplitRail will only carry bikes with tires up to 3" wide. It looks like the Aventon Pace 500 has 27"x 2.2" tires, so the MonoRail # RKY10004 would work well for you on your 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe. If you think there's ever a chance you'll switch to fat tire e-bikes then I recommend going with the SplitRail # RKY11404.

  • Lock Recommendation for Additional Security with the RockyMounts MonoRail Bike Rack
The best lock recommendation we'll be able to make for your RockyMounts MonoRail 2 Bike Platform Rack # RKY10004 is going to be using the lock that comes with the rack plus a cable lock like the # e98891 which you can route through the safety chain loops of the hitch and through the wheels of the bike. This will give you an added layer of theft protection for the rack plus your bikes. The hitch pin lock you mentioned would not work with the hitch pin of the RockyMounts bike rack.
