Saris Freedom 2 On Vehicle

The Freedom gives you the liberty to rapidly load and safely transport 2 bikes of nearly any shape, size, or style on your vehicle's 1-1/4" or 2" hitch. This compact, platform-style rack is easy to use and weighs just 22.5 lbs, so you'll spend more time riding and less time wrestling with the rack or loading and unloading your bikes.

Pivoting Cradles with Cushioned Straps

Saris Freedom Cuscino Cradle

You'll sleep tight knowing that your bikes are lovingly cradled in Saris' patent-pending Cuscinos - or pillows. These pillows are built into the ratcheting straps that hold your bikes by the downtubes or top tubes in the rubber-lined cradles. These straps are specially designed to avoid scratching or scuffing your bike paint during transport. The rubber-lined cradles also have grooves that accommodate brake lines and cables.

Saris Freedom Adjustable Cradles

The cradles pivot and slide up and down the central mast. This allows the rack to grab your bike's tube at the perfect angle. Plastic twist knobs secure the cradles in place.

Adjustable Wheel Trays

Saris Freedom Wheel Holders

You can adjust the injection-molded plastic wheel trays along the rack's horizontal arm to accommodate bikes with different wheelbases. These trays secure in place with plastic twist knobs. Ratcheting plastic straps secure your bike's wheels to the trays.

If you want to carry a fat bike on the Freedom, you can replace the rack's wheel trays with fat bike cradles (SA4419 - sold separately). Or, if you want to carry 2 recumbent bikes, you can replace the horizontal arm with a longer arm (SA4415B - sold separately) that accommodates recumbents with up to 57" wheelbases.

Folding Mast

Saris Freedom 2 Folded

You can fold down the upright mast by pulling a lever at the base. This allows you to easily access your vehicle's rear cargo area, and it means you can leave the rack in your hitch without it interfering with your cargo hatch or backup camera. The compact design also lets you easily store the rack in your garage when it's not in use.

Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin and Adapter Sleeve

Saris Freedom 2 Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin and Adapter Sleeve

The threaded hitch pin helps to prevent the rack from moving and rattling around in your vehicle's hitch receiver. And the included adapter sleeve ensures that Freedom will fit both 1-1/4" and 2" hitches. An anti-rattle hitch lock (SA3022 - sold separately) and cable lock (SA981 - sold separately) are recommended to deter theft of the rack and your bikes.

Video Transcript for Saris Freedom Hitch Bike Rack Review

Today we'll be taking a look at the Saris Freedom platform style 2-bike rack, part number SA4412B. Compared to other bike racks, this is a less expensive option to get your bikes where they're going. This compact platform rack allows you to carry 2 bikes of just about any shape or size on the rear of your vehicle. It holds your bikes in 3 places. We've got 1 large cradle here, the down tube and then 2 straps and the wheel cradles. Our wheel cradles are grooved to fit road bike tires and mountain bike tires up to 3" wide.

Our center cradle is padded to protect our bike's finish. It's also grooved to accommodate cables 00:00:37 and it rotates to match our bike's shape. All of our cradles are adjustable to accommodate your bike. When not in use, our center mast pulls down to the left or right side either way so we can get into our rear hatch. Our platform is elevated for extra clearance here at the rear. It's a light weight rack.

It only weighs 22-1/2 pounds. It's made out of a sturdy steel construction with a black powdered coat finish so it's going to resist rust and corrosion. It has a maximum wheel base of 48" and it features a limited lifetime warranty. For added security, you can pick up a Saris anti-rattle hitch lock with part number SA3022 or a Saris cable lock 8 foot long, part number SA9181. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. Now this can be used for either an 1-1/4" or 2" hitches.

We've got our included adapter sleeve on here for our 2" receiver. Let's go ahead and feed it into our receiver tube. Then we'll line up our pin holes. It looks pretty good. Then we'll take our included anti-rattle bolt and clip and get that started.

Now you will need to provide your own wrench to tighten it down. It's just a 3/4" so you can use a wrench or a socket. The nice thing about the anti-rattle bolt, it's going to help reduce all that play and all that rattle within our receiver tube and our bike rack to make a nice solid ride for our 2 bikes. As you can see it's nice and tight. Once the rattle's gone we can go ahead and take our clip, put that on the other side and we've got it. Now in preparation for loading up our bikes, we'll need to raise up the center mast. We can do that by pulling up the yellow T-handle. Then we can undo our wheel straps. Now we can lower our down tube cradle. This is going to make it much easier to load up our bike. We'll also want to undo that strap. Now we can grab our bike and set it in place. It's recommended you load up the heaviest bike first. We'll set it in our cradles. With our bike in place, we can go ahead and bring up our down tube cradle. We'll make sure that it's loosened up. We'll raise it up into position. Once we've got it where we want, we can tighten it down and then of course run our strap over. Now we can strap our wheels into place. We can adjust our wheel. Our strap goes between our spokes. Pull it down through and then pull it nice and tight. We can repeat the same process for the front. Now if you need to when positioning your bike, you can adjust your cradles. When you've got it where you want it, you can just tighten it down. Now let's grab our second bike and load that up. With 2 bikes loaded up, let's go ahead and take it down on our test course and see how it performs. Here on our test course, let's first go into our inaudible 00:03:49. This is going to show side to side action such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our alternating speed bumps, this is going to show a twisting action such as going over potholes or uneven pavement. Then finally onto our solid speed bumps, this is going to show an up and down action such as pulling in and out of a driveway or out of a parking lot. That's going to complete our look at the Saris Freedom platform style 2-bike rack for an 1-1/4" and 2" hitches, part number SA4412B. .

i give it three rating it is a nice rack and really light and easy to handle...The only two things I don't like about it are. I cannot put my short wheel base recumbent on it unless I do a lot of rigging... and two the cups for the wheel are plastic and I have had one break. Look up the replacement part and is a reasonably priced but the shipping is ridicules. I have patch it with gorilla tape and is working fairly well.. Am looking for another type so I can just put the recumbent on easily. 281792

etrailer.com is without question, the best website I've ever seen when it comes to product description and installation instructions. The installation videos are incredible. Thanks to the ease and simplicity of the installation videos, I knew I would have absolutely no problem whatsoever doing the work myself...and I was right. You guys are a class act from the young lady who took my order over the phone to the speed of shipping. I've already referred a co-worker to your site...thank you! 190744

Completely inadequate for my application (heavier-than average eBikes; within the weight specifications of this Saris Freedom rack). eTrailer customer service should have advised against this rack, and for one more suitable for the task. But eTrailer did not recommend a more suitable rack. The rail from the hitch receiver to the rack is too long - on my installation, at least eight inches of wobbly lever could be removed and there would still be plenty of clearance between the rack and my vehicle bumper. That cartoonishly-long lever evokes the memory of Archimedes' long lever to move the world - in the case of this Saris Freedom rack, that long lever just makes the bikes and the rack wobble unacceptably. Of course, if the end-user modifies the rack in an attempt to do the design engineering job that was not done in Madison, WI, the lifetime warranty is voided. Replaced this rack with a Thule Easyfold. Way more money, but it does the job because it was designed to do the job. 420946

I bought this rack for several reasons, including its price point and light weight. I also like where its designed and made. The American flag on the back is a nice touch. I also wanted a solid platform rack that would hold two bikes securely for long road trips and highway speeds. I didn't see much need for a heavier tilt-away rack since I can easily access the rear of my small hatchback through the back the seats. This hitch is easy to assemble and ready to go in minutes. Its light weight makes it easy to slide into the hitch and the threaded hitch pin holds the rack tight. I also bought a cheap socket wrench and a deep 19mm socket to keep in the car. There is still a small amount of side to side wobble when the bikes are loaded, but not much. You won't notice any wobble when driving unless the road is really rough. Be sure to check out ETrailer's road test video of this rack. This is a good sturdy rack. I also got the hitch strap that Curt recommends to secure the center upright support to the car. I also recommend getting the Saris locking hitch pin and cable combo with matching keys. This rack does not fold up completely because the hitch arm is fixed, but its still light and easy to move around and store. And you could always take the hitch arm off for longer term winter storage. It does take some fiddling to get the tire mounts and drop bar mounts lined up for each bike so if you have four different bikes like I do, you'll find yourself doing that quite often. Eventually I will memorize the locations for each or mark them somehow on the rack. My two large road bikes fit like a glove but I could see there being some difficulty with getting seats and handle bars to clear sometimes, which means more time fiddling with the mounts when loading up a friend's bike. I also like how well centered the bikes are and how little side overhang I'm able to achieve, which is also important for long road trips and highway speeds (less drag = better mpg). All of my bikes are well centered and only my big 29" mountain bike with its long wheelbase sticks out to the side much. On the downside, but not for me, it does take some strength to lift the inside bike up and over the center support, and doing so carefully without hitting the back of your car. This could be a problem for some, especially if you have a big heavy townie or mountain bike. This is also dependent on how high your hitch receiver is off the ground. Mine happens to be very low to the ground so I don't have to lift the bikes as high as I would on a larger SUV for example. So other platform racks may be a better choice if you're concerned about lifting your bike up to or over shoulder height just to get it on the rack. To sum it up, the Saris Freedom 2 is a great rack for a good price and I couldn't be happier with my purchase, and for all the great info and advice from the wonderful people at Etrailer.com to make it so easy! Etrailer rocks! 346699

I received my Freedom 2 rack yesterday. It took me about 10 minutes to assemble it with no issues at all. This morning, I put the rack on the back of my 2014 Ford Explorer, and began to load my bike. The rack attached easily to my 2" hitch receiver, and when I tightened the bolt, it was a very sturdy and stable fit. I made the adjustments required to mount my bike on the rack, and found that it traveled securely and very stable. My only issue with the Freedom 2 is the hold-down straps on the wheel and tube brackets. I think a better ratcheting system and a better qualitty strap would greatly enhance the unit. Otherwise, I'm very happy with the rack. My carbon fibre hybrid and my grandson's road bikes will be easily transported to wherever we want to ride! 391673

I was wondering if you could elaborate on how your bikes did not fit on your Saris bike rack. It does have a maximum wheelbase of 48 inches, and the wheel hoops are intended to be adjustable. If there is anything that I can do to help you out to try to get your bikes to fit I would be happy to give it a try.

If the bottom rail was 6-8 inches longer both bikes would fit with no problem.

I have checked with my contacts at Saris and if you are needing a longer horizontal bar you can use # SA4451B. This is an extended length adapter bar, and Saris actually uses this for their recumbent bike racks. For this bar you will need to measure the center hub to hub of the bikes and make sure that is less than 57 inches. https:www.etrailer.com/Accessories-and-PartsSarisSA4415B.html

Although I have net transported bikes yet ( picking up 2 bikes later today), I do want to share that purchasing it thru etrailer.com was very easy and it shipped very fast to my home. The Sarris Freedom was extremely easy to put together. It took about 10 minutes, basicly 3 bolts. Its very sturdy yet light, not bulky. Looks easy to store in my garage when not in use. Straps and wheel holders appear to be very well built. Got it on sale and the price was very good. Looking forward to trying it out later when picking up 2 new bikes. I plan on transporting somewhat locally between 5 and 25 miles each way. Initial feeling its a very nice rack. 460675

Very solid rack. I have it mounted on a 2018 Kia Niro and it's perfect. Holds two 29" bikes well. Only complaint is the weight and it's not the most compact thing to store. 640049

This product works very well for the type of bikes we got (Electra Townie men’s and woman’s). Not the best rack for the type of vehicle (2013 Jeep Wrangler). Unable to open back hatch to let dog out until the bikes are off the rack. First trip was 600 miles with bikes in tow and didn’t even know they were there. I love the fact that this is a American made product. I am happy with my purchase. Thanks to the support staff at etrailer it was a great experience 524849

This is a great product. It is easy to use. The bikes stay separated and do not bump into each other as they did on our 4 bike hanging rack. It does not require any extra set up for the women's bikes we have which is a real plus. We love that it is made in the USA and that it can be used with a 2" and 1 1/4" hitch. Etrailers were great to deal with. 148369

The Saris Freedom 2 Platform Rack fits my needs very nicely. It is lightweight, so it is easy to handle, and is plenty strong to hold 2 bikes. The platform format supports the bikes nicely and is convenient to load. etrailer has been very helpful and cooperative with getting me set up with this rack. 289339

I still remember how cooperative etrailer was with me. I use the bike rack rarely, but I did use it to take two bikes up to Oregon recently in order to view the eclipse of the sun. Our motel was about 10 miles from our chosen viewing point, and we rode bikes to get there. The Saris Bike Rack isn’t as convenient to use as some heavier and more expensive racks, but it did the job for me just fine. It gets easier with practise. I am pleased with it and will be using it in the future. I also would point out that the Saris company also was very helpful to me.

First off I give ETrailer a 110% rating. I placed my order and received it. The same day I was looking for some bike accessories on another site and they had this rack listed for less. I sent the link per their guarantee and shortly after it was sent I received a response that there is a credit to my credit card. The rack assembles very easily. It only requires bolting ta few pieces together is is almost self explanatory. It would be nice if the 2 " adaptor would screw onto the 11/4" tube instead of just slipping on. it has a tendency to slide off. The instructions have a few cautions. One is not to drive over 70 MPH. The other is to avoid placing the wheels near any exhaust. I find this almost impossible as I have a Flex with dual exhaust and there is no way that the bikes can be put in the rack without the tires being close to the exhaust. It also recommends removing the unit when not in use. initial set up of the bikes took some time and readajustments. I had to swap the tire holders from outside to inside. The holder come off the tubes very easy. There is a tab that can be depressed for the units to slip off. I had to one them because the larger bike is supposed to be near the car and the way that they were bothe bikes wouldn't fit. It was then a lot of shifting to get both bikes to fit and for the handle bars not to hit the seats on the other bike and for the cranks to clear the upright post. I did finally manage to get both to clear everything but the wheels of the bikes do extend a little beyond the side of the vehicle. The bolts that hold the tire holders in place have a nut on the bottom that can and will fall off if loosed too much. It is not a problem if you notice that the nut fell off and are able to find it. Once adjustment is found the bikes are securely held in place. If your an on carrying different bikes it may make the unit a little difficult changing the settings. I don't know how other carriers are since this is my first rack. It doesn't fold as compact as other racks as the upright unit is the only thing that folds down by pulling out the spring loaded pin. With the upright down it doesn't interfere with the back up camera. A wrench is required to install and remove the hitch. I have a flex so there is a lot of space in the back to store the hitch when not in use. With a regular vehicle it may be difficult as it doesn't really fold into a compact shape. This may also present a problem when storing in a garage if limited for space. 194833

Etrailers website was easy to use and the product choices were great. We found the exact product that we were looking for to accommodate our two folding "Bike Fridays". This rack was purchased to replace a much heavier 4 bike rack. It is much lighter. Also, the threader mounting bolt is well done resulting in no noise from the mounting when traveling. There are 2 weaknesses which do not recommend the rack. First, the spring loaded pin for holding the vertical bar in place works very poorly resulting in the bar flopping around while loading bikes. More significant is the plastic construction of the brackets for attaching. The ones on the horizontal bar are workable but more difficult to slide than they should be. The ones on the vertical bar are worse. The padding for the frame is fine. But the latching straps and mechanism are awful. You have to adjust the bikes' positions and hardware (petals, etc) to get the brackets as far from everything as possible. Then you can thread the straps where you can closely guide and push them through the latching mechanism. If you try in any limited area, the straps won't be tight and you will just let the bike(s) travel loosely mounted. Fortunately the padding does keep them from getting scratched. Unless the brackets have been redesigned, I would not recommend this rack. I'm keeping the rack because it costs too much to just throw away. I've experimented for a year, so I've gotten everything in a workable position. Even so, it takes twice as long to load and unload bikes as it has on any other rack I've owned in the past 40 years. 657619

You should place your E-Bike as close to your 2017 Buick Encore as possible when using the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack # SA4412B, which means on the inside of the rack. • What Size Tires Will Fit the Saris Freedom Bike Carrier
The Saris Freedom bike carrier # SA4412B accepts bike tires up to 3 inches wide. The diameter of the tire is not an issue with this particular carrier because it secures the wheels at the bottoms as opposed to the tops and/or sides. Provided the tires on your bikes are both less than 3 inches wide they will fit the Saris carrier. I have linked a video review of this carrier for you.

  • Inexpensive Option To Carry Two E-Bikes On a 2017 Toyota Prius
I am not sure how much you are looking to spend but bike racks that are capable of handling the weight of two electric bikes are not going to be cheap because they must be built much stronger. However, we do have an excellent option for you in the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack part # SA4412B which is one of the most cost effective options for two electric bikes. The Saris Freedom is also very lightweight at only 22-1/2 lbs so it is easy to take on and off the vehicle, it has a unique...

  • Why are Some Bike Racks Not Rated for Use Behind an RV
Only certain bike racks are rated by the manufacturer for use behind RVs or trailers. This is simply because the ride at the rear of an RV is significantly rougher when compared to the rear of a standard passenger vehicle. The reason for this is that the rear of an RV is typically extended well beyond the rear axle, which results in a see-saw like action when driving down the road that in turn creates a lot of extra movement on the hitch and bike rack. RV approved hitch-mounted bike racks...

  • Can the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Rack # SA4412B be Used on a 2016 Honda Fit with 2 Electra Townie Bikes
The Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack # SA4412B is a great option to carry 2 Electra Townie bikes with your 2016 Honda Fit. It is compatible with the 1-1/4 inch hitch receiver that you already have installed, it has adjustable soft rubber cradles to grip your bike frame, and it can carry 2 bikes up to 60 lbs. You will want to check with your owner's manual on finding out how much Tongue Weight (TW) your Fit can carry in relation to other weighs in the vehicle. The bike rack itself...

  • Trailer Hitch and Bike Rack for a 2013 Toyota Prius c and 57 Pound E-Bike
In order to carry 2 bikes on your 2013 Toyota Prius c, one of which is a 57 pound electric bike, you will need to install a trailer hitch and use a hitch mounted bike rack. The Saris Freedom, # SA4412B, is a hitch mounted bike rack, it is compatible with the available trailer hitches for your Prius c, and it has a 60 pound per bike capacity. All this makes it a great option for you. For a trailer hitch use Curt hitch # C11484. This hitch can support up to 200 pounds suspended from the...

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack that is Easy to Load a Woman's Townie Bike
Platform style bike racks are easier to load. The Saris Freedom # SA4412B does have a significant rise in the shank that makes the platform higher up than other platform style racks (8 inches from the top of the receiver opening to the bottom of the tray portion of the rack). But the rack is light weight, only 22-1/2 pounds, and would work well for you. I have included a link to a video review of this rack for you.

  • Best Bike Rack for Two Electra Townie 7D EQ Bikes
The best bike rack we have for your Electra Townie 7D EQ bikes is the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack part # SA4412B. This bike rack has a unique frame clamp design which allows it to attach to alternative shaped frames like what is on your Townie. This will truly be the best option we have for you. I do not believe the Swagman Chinook 2 Bike Platform Rack part # S64683 or most Thule bike racks will work. If you would like to add locks to the Freedom you can do so using part # SA3022...

  • RV-Rated Hitch-Mount 2-Bike Rack for Class C Motorhome with 1-1/4-Inch Hitch Receiver
Most motorhomes typically have a 2-inch hitch but we can still help you with a 2-bike hitch rack for your folding e-bikes to transport them on the 1-1/4-inch hitch on your 2017 Winnebago Trend 23D Class C motorhome. In your circumstances we need to balance a few things: the higher-than-average Evelo bike weight of about 37-lbs each without batteries and the fact that you need a carrier rated for use on an RV. Not all bike racks can be used on a motorhome but we have a range of racks...

  • 2 Bike Rack Recommendation for Carrying Electra Townies with Fenders and Balloon Tires
The best rack style for a bike like your Electra Townie that has fenders would be a platform bike rack that uses a hook to grab the frame of the bike and hold it to the rack. One very popular option is the Saris Freedom part # SA4412B. And then for an adapter to allow the wider tires to fit on the rack you'd want the Fat Tire adapter part # SA4419.

  • Hitch-Mount Platform Bike Carrier Recommendation for Road Bike with Carbon Fiber Frame
For high-value delicate bikes such as a carbon-frame road bike, you will be better offer with a carrier that makes no contact at all with the frame. The Saris Freedom 2 # SA4412B that you referenced is a fine platform rack but it will still make contact with the frame due to the nature of its design. A better option is a wheel-mount type rack such as the Thule T2 Pro XTB # TH9034XT that secures the bike to the carrier through a hinged arm that contacts only the front wheel's rubber tire....

  • Recommended Bike Rack for Two Beach Cruiser Bikes
I have the perfect bike rack for your two beach cruiser bikes but because they have fenders and can be heavy you will want to go with a frame mount bike rack that has a higher weight capacity. I recommend the Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack part # SA4412B because it meets both of the above certain and best of all it only weighs 22-1/2 lbs so it will be easy to take on and off the vehicle. The Saris Freedom is made in the USA and comes with a lifetime warranty.

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Platform Bike Rack for a Step-Through Frame Bike and 2014 Subaru Forester
First, highway driving should actually be less stressful on the rack than surface road driving because there tends to be less curves, bumps, pot holes, and other similar things you would find on the streets. Any of the racks you are interested in should have no issues on the freeway. Stability: platform bike racks are going to move around. This is because of their design. You have long platforms extending out from the center of the hitch with weight on them. There is going to be some...

  • Best Hitch Mounted Bike Rack to Carry a Womens Electra Beach Cruiser with Fenders
If I had to guess I'd say the person who told you not to get a hanging rack said so because you have a women's bike that doesn't have the straight cross tube to hang the bike from. And they'd be right to say so. On the other hand, the person who told you not to get a platform rack probably sees your bike has fenders, which will conflict with a lot of them. And they'd also be right. So there's good reason to be confused. I recommend a platform rack. More specifically, one that holds...

  • RV Bike Rack Recommendation Similar to Saris Freedom Bike Rack
At the rear of a trailer or RV the ride quality is very rough when compared to the ride quality at the rear of a passenger vehicle. Reason being the suspension isn't as sophisticated and there is a longer distance between the rear axle and the rear of the trailer which exaggerates the movement of the trailer when hitting bumps. Because of that only a few bike racks were designed to be reinforced enough for that type of use. For a similar bike rack that would fit and work well you would...

First, let's talk weight. The Saris Freedom 2 weighs 22-1/2-lbs, the Thule Doubletrack Pro about 35-lbs and the Swagman XTC-2 about 28-lbs. If you intend to install and remove the rack often this may be a consideration. In...

The cradles will rotate to any angle needed for a good fit. If this distance is less than 12 inches, the Freedom 2 Bike Rack would work great for you. I'll link you to an...

  • Which Hitch Size is Recommended for a 2011 Nissan Rogue to Carry Saris Freedom 2 Bike Platform Rack
I typically try to recommend 2 inch hitches when they are available as they have higher towing capacities and since there are more hitch accessories made for that size they offer more flexibility. That being said, the 1-1/4 inch size is smaller and less noticeable than a 2 inch hitch so from an aesthetic point of view I can see the appeal of a 1-1/4 inch hitch. The Saris Freedom part # SA4412B can fit either size hitch and would work just as good in either. For a 1-1/4 inch hitch...

The Saris Freedom bike carrier # SA4412B is a great option for your 2011 Toyota Corolla S. Not to mention it is very light weight at just 22-1/2 pounds. You will have just 12 inches from the center of your hitch pin hole to the closest wheel tray. You will have a couple more inches to the center mast, so if your tail gate is under 15 inches from the pin to the end, this rack will fit. For security I recommend the hitch lock # SA3022 and the cable lock # SA981. If you...
