Saris SuperClamp EX

The SuperClamp EX lets you rapidly load and safely transport 2 bikes on your vehicle's 1-1/4" or 2" hitch. This rack has front- and rear-wheel hooks to safely transport your bikes without making frame contact. The lightweight, compact design with a platform-style setup allows for rapid bike loading and unloading. Just set your bikes in the wheel trays, ratchet down the wheel hooks, and secure your bikes with the integrated cable lock.

Ratcheting Wheel Hooks

Saris SuperClamp EX ratcheting wheel hooks

It has padded, ratcheting hooks that secure your bikes by the wheels - not by the frame. This prevents the rack from scratching and scuffing your bike's paint or damaging the frame, which makes the SuperClamp EX an excellent choice for transporting bikes with carbon fiber frames.

Saris SuperClamp EX sliding wheel trays

The hooks adjust independently - just press the gray button and slide the hook up or down. This adjustability allows you to carry any combination of full-size adult bikes, women's bikes, children's bikes, and alternative-frame bikes.

Adjustable Wheel Trays

Saris SuperClamp EX sliding wheel trays

Injection-molded plastic wheel trays slide along the rack's horizontal arms to accommodate bikes with different wheelbases. These trays secure in place with twist knobs.

Saris SuperClamp EX folding masts at end of tray

Use the included ratcheting straps to secure your bike's rear wheel to the wheel tray.

Saris SuperClamp EX reflectors

There are built-in reflectors on the outside wheel trays that increase visibilty for both daytime and nighttime travel.

If you want to carry a fat bike with tires wider then 4-1/2", you can replace the rack's wheel trays with fat bike cradles (SA4419 - sold separately).

Folding Masts at Ends of Base

Saris SuperClamp EX folding masts at end of tray

The masts are located at opposite ends of the base, making the SuperClamp EX extremely easy to load and unload. Because these masts are at each end of the base, instead of in the middle like most platform racks, they won't interfere in any way with your bikes as you load or unload them. Instead, they simply fold out of the way, giving you a clear path to the wheel trays.

Saris SuperClamp EX sliding wheel trays

These masts lock into the upright position for use, then fold down for storage and access to your vehicle's rear cargo area. Just press down on the gray button and rotate the mast to the desired position. The masts pivot on strong, case-hardened steel brackets that ensure long life and smooth operation.

Folding and Tilting Design

Saris SuperClamp EX folding and tiliting design

There is an integrated lever that lets you tilt the rack down with bikes loaded for access to your rear cargo area or fold the rack up against your vehicle for storage. And it means you can leave the rack in your hitch without it interfering with your cargo hatch or backup camera. The compact design lets you easily store the rack in your garage when it's not in use. There is also a built-in bottle opener over the lever.

Complete Security System

Saris SuperClamp EX cable locks

The SuperClamp EX includes locks to deter theft of your bikes and the rack. A braided, 10-mm stainless steel cable lock built into the base secures your bikes to the rack. The cable has a vinyl coating to prevent it from scratching your bikes. Simply thread the cable through the bike frames and attach it to the lock body at the other end of the base.

Saris SuperClamp EX sliding wheel trays

When not in use, the lock stores inside the rack's arm. A push-button releases the lock, so it won't accidentally slide out and drag on the ground during transport.

Saris SuperClamp EX reflectors

The HitchTite lock fits over the end of your threaded hitch pin to secure the rack to your hitch. The threaded hitch pin serves as an anti-rattle device to minimize movement and noise in the hitch.

Saris SuperClamp EX lock

Both locks have push-to-lock bodies that make them easy to secure and help to prevent accidental locking. Integrated dust caps keep the lock cores clean and dry. And the locks are keyed alike, so you can use the same key for both locks.

Saris SuperClamp EX lock

The included adapter sleeve ensures the SuperClamp EX will fit both 1-1/4" and 2" hitches.

Video Transcript for Saris Freedom SuperClamp EX 2 Bike Rack Review

Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Saris Freedom SuperClamp EX Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack, part number: SA4025F. This lightweight, platform-style bike rack holds two bikes by their wheels; there is no frame contact. The rack has the ability to tilt away with bikes loaded so we can gain access to our rear hatch. We'll pull out on the black lever here, tilt it away. As you can see, plenty of room to remove any cargo, gear, groceries; anything we might have with us on our trip. It features two integrated cable locks so we can secure our bikes.

It also features an anti-rattle hitch lock, which is gonna prevent anyone from removing our bike rack from our vehicle. I've gone ahead and removed one of the bikes so we can go over some additional features. The wheel cradles will accommodate road bike tires, mountain bike tires, and fat tires up to 4-1/2" wide. The wheel cradles are adjustable along the platform to fit wheel bases up to 48" long. The ratcheting hooks firmly grip your bike by its tires, and because they're adjustable, they're gonna work with a wide variety of bikes; fat bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, women's and children's bikes. With our bikes removed, as you can see, our arms are adjustable as well to work with a wide variety of bikes.

When not in use, the arms fold flat and then the whole thing tilts up towards our vehicle for compact storage. This would be ideal for pulling in your garage or in a tight parking spot. Here at the rear you can see our wheel cradles have reflectors for increased visibility at night. It has a weight capacity of 60 pounds per bike and it features a limited lifetime warranty. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. Now this can either be used for 1-1/4" or 2" hitches.

We've got our include sleeve installed on our shank for our 2" receiver. Let's go ahead and put it into our receiver tube. So we'll feed it in and we'll line up our pin holes. Once we get those lined up, we can take our included anti-rattle bolt and thread that through here on the driver's side. We get it hand tightened, we can take a 3/4" wrench, and you will have to provide your own, and tighten that down the rest of the way.

Here on the other side, we'll take our included lock and then just push that on until it snaps in place. As you can see, with our anti-rattle bolt installed, we've reduced all the play within our receiver tube and our bike rack fits nice and solid. Now, in preparation for loading up our bikes, we'll need to tilt out our platform. Make our way to the lever back here, we're gonna pull up on it, tilt it out until it snaps into place. Now we can fold out and raise up our wheel hooks. To do that we're gonna push in the gray button at the top here, fold it all the way out, and then raise up the hooks with the button at the end here. We'll also want to undo our straps. You can press another button there, guide the strap out. Now, it's recommended you load the heaviest bike first. For us it's gonna be our fat bike. We'll set the tires in place within the wheel cradles. Let's go ahead and secure our wheels. So we'll take our wheel hooks, we're gonna come up to about this position here, and then push down. With our other hook we'll do just the same. We'll come up to the 10 o'clock position and then push down. Now we can secure our straps. Go between our spokes and run it through our ratchet on the other side. I've gone ahead and loaded up the second bike the exact same way. You'll just want to be sure and alternate the handle bars. Now let's run our cable locks. We'll locate the cable lock here at the end of the bike rack, we'll push down on the gray button here, and then pull it out. I'm just gonna go through my wheel, over my frame, and then connect it to the center here. With both of my cables run, let's grab our key; we can make sure it's unlocked, push them in place, and then lock it back up. Now we're all set to take it out on our test course and see how it performs. Here on our test course, let's first go into our slalom. This is gonna show side-to-side action, such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our solid speed bumps. This is gonna show and up and down action, such as pulling in and out of a driveway or out of a parking lot. And then finally, on to our alternating speed bumps. This is gonna show a twisting action, such as going over potholes or uneven pavement. And that's gonna complete our look at the Saris Freedom SuperClamp EX Platform-Style 2 Bike Rack, part number: SA4025F.

I purchased this rack because It stated it would support the weight of my 2 electric bikes. The first trip with the rack installed on our motor home it failed after crossing a railroad crossing at 25 mph. The manufacturer told me to read the small print on the rack where it says not for use on any RV. They charged over a $100 for parts to repair it. Using the rack on my jeep or the motor home shouldn't matter. In my opinion the rack is under designed to carry the weight of the bikes as advertised. In good conscience I can not recommend this rack. 609812

Comments

The reason Saris does not recommend using this rack on a motorhome is the extended rear overhang distance between rear axle and rear bumper typically found on motorhomes. This subjects any hitch mounted accessory to greater jarring and bouncing that would be experienced if the rack were used on the rear of a regular passenger vehicle. This extra bouncing exerts forces on the rack that it wasnt designed to withstand. Remember riding in the back seat of the school bus when it went over a big bump when you were a kid? Same principle. We do show in the product description above that the rack is not recommended on motorhomes or towed trailers.

The only thing better than a Saris designed rack is purchasing it from Etrailer. Super fast delivery as well as a good price. This is the 4th Saris rack that I have owned. What I like about this rack is that, like the Thelma series, it holds the bike by the wheels instead of the frame. It can handle any size tire and any type of frame. The SuperClamp enables you to transport any bike that you have. 591609

I've only used the rack once so far, but I really like it. I used it on a 29er carbon mountain bike. Part of the trip was on a dirt road and also on rough and curvy paved roads. There is some play to the rack (from the hinge point of the rack), but it was quiet, and I don't recall ever hearing it. Nor did it look at any time like my bike was getting shaken to death. To be clear, the attachment of the rack to the hitch is rock solid. One of the things I really like this rack, and why I chose it over others, is that the integrated bike lock is a pretty beefy cable, and more importantly, it allows me to lock up both wheels and the frame. Many of the integrated locks on other racks only lock up the frame or one wheel, maybe a frame and one wheel, but not all three. I haven't tested the locks trying to lock up the frame and both wheels on two bikes, but it definitely works for one bike. This rack doesn't fold up as flat as other racks that I've seen, but the security was more important to me. All in all, I'm really happy with the rack so far. It seems well made and everything moves and operates smoothly. 594678

I am really happy with this Saris bike rack. I was looking to replace an older, very serviceable but heavy rack that took up too much space in my garage and didn't easily allow me to open my Forester's back hatch door. The Saris is lighter, more compact when folded, protective of my bikes, and very easily loaded and secured (with built-in locking cables). A quick release allows the rack and bikes to tilt away from the car to allow easy access to the hatch door. In addition, I always look first for American-made products. This rack, which turned out to be well designed and well built and just what I was looking for, is made in Madison, Wisconsin, and that makes this Wisconsinite and Badger alumnus very happy, indeed! Cheers! 617597

Easy installation. Seemed like most of it was already assembled just coming out of the box. After installation I put my 29er and Trek road bike on it. Like others before me, it seemed that another 12-15" of length on the bike cable locks would be handy. Being able to lock the front and rear wheels in addition to the frame with the cable locks would make a great rack even better. I was very satisfied with the carrier construction quality and ease of operation. Liked being able to use two hooks for each bike. I would definitely recommend this rack. etrailer shipped very promptly as always and were very helpful with dimensional information regarding hitch set backs to make sure adequate clearance was available to fold various racks up when not transporting bikes. 517248

This is a review of the Saris SUPERCLAMP EX 2-BIKE but I have to tell a little story about how I came to purchase this item. First, I bought a Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch in March and a Kuat Sherpa 2.0 in early May. The Kuat was very sturdy and well designed. However, even when empty and folded up, it was too high for the rear hatch in my Porsche Macan to open without first bending the Sherpa down . So, I could never enter the rear of the SUV without always moving the rack. This was so annoying that I decided to change to a Saris SUPERCLAMP EX 2-BIKE, which had been my 2nd choice. I returned the Kuat, paying the shipping and a 20% restocking fee, and received and installed the Saris within 3 days. This was about a month ago. The service and support from etrailer.com on this change was fast, courteous and reasonable in price. The Saris is not as sturdy feeling as the Kuat and tips a little when tightening the wheel holders (i.e., pushing down on the wheel holders) due to the torque put on the hitch. But the Saris is plenty sturdy enough, and I have used it to transport my Cannondale Synapse on multiple trips in 1 month, all of duration 30-60 minutes. The Saris is easy to load and unload and keeps the bike very secure even at 70+ mph. And, the Saris folds up much more compactly to allow opening the Macan’s tailgate without first bending the rack down. This is a terrific advantage over the Kuat and makes me very happy that I made the change. I strongly recommend the Saris SUPERCLAMP EX 2-BIKE and etrailer.com, which provided excellent pricing, service and support on all 3 purchases. 541470

Nice design and opperates as expected. Only reason i didnt give it a 5 star is the packaging and decals. There were a few bolts and the lock loose in the packaging which could have caused damage but luckily didn't. Also the decals on the cross bar had plenty of bubbles in them which doesnt look good. Maybe the assembler was having a bad day, but for the price i expected better. 642640

This is a great bike rack for those who need room for 4 bikes but don't want to stick 10 feet out the back. Really easy assembly, excellent operation, and seamless (and quick!) free delivery. Great experience. 610275

Review from a similar Saris Freedom SuperClamp EX in Hitch Bike Racks

This is a very solid setup. I've taken it on two local trips and one longer 4 hour trip including highways, narrow curvy mountain roads and so on. Never did the setup wobble. Also a comment about the legendary Saris warranty. One of the arms had a ratchet mechanism that wasn't working. I contacted Saris and within a week they shipped out a replacement. The swing down mechanism works well, but I would make sure to have a second set of hands available if you are planning to lower it out of the way with bikes already loaded. Without bikes loaded it is a snap. At the end of the day the best review is that my dear wife provided. "I am so happy you won't complain about taking the bikes to the beach now!". It really is so much easier than roof carrying bikes. Honestly in 15 minutes I can have the rack mounted and all four bikes loaded and secured which is so much easier and faster than roof carrying. 502209

Review from a similar Saris Freedom SuperClamp EX in Hitch Bike Racks

I throughly researched platform bike racks on etrailer.com. I thought I wanted a 4 bike rack that could be reduced to a 2 bike, bike rack. I ended up purchasing a Saris Freedom Superclamp EX 4 rack. This rack doesn't transition to a 2 person but it's so compact that when it's folded up I can't see it through my rearview window. It assembles easy and is very sturdy and easy to use. I never give anything 5 stars but I'm pleased as punch with this bike rack. A shoutout to etrailer - What a great website, everything you need to evaluate any rack is on this website. WELL DONE... 499680

  • For this being your first bike rack purchase you have done a fantastic job at researching to narrow it down to some great choices! Since you have done your research and watched our review videos I will avoid going over all of the features and focus on your specific questions for each bike rack. If you do end up having more questions though please let me know. The Kuat Transfer # TS02G is a great, cost-effective option that only weighs in at 37 lbs. It also has a gunmetal gray powder...

For a bike rack I really like the Saris Freedom Superclamp part # SA4025F. This is a lightweight platform rack (which is normally an unheard of combo). That means it'll be easy to install and remove from your vehicle since it's light, but...
