A Solution for Rough Rides

Have you ever hit a bump while towing and felt that road shock rattle you down to your bones? It's a common feeling. Most gooseneck couplers are made almost completely of metal, so there's nothing to soften the impact whenever you hit a bump. It not only takes a toll on you as you drive, it's also a stressful experience for your horses. And it beats up your equipment, leading to premature wear and tear for both your truck and trailer.

This is a simple solution to change all that. Not only does the box portion on this coupler have built-in polyurethane cushion to help with road shock, but it also has glides inside that ensure smooth motion front to back to limit chucking.

Video Transcript for Review of Convert-A-Ball Gooseneck Coupler - Star Performance Cushioned Gooseneck Coupler - CAB97FR

Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a quick look together at the Star Performance by Convert-A-Ball Cushioned Gooseneck Coupler. Now, this is going to fit your standard gooseneck trailers. The ball size is 2 5/16 inches. The gross towing weight is going to be 30,000 pounds, with a vertical load limit or maximum tongue weight of 10,000 pounds. This cushioned coupler is going to replace your existing gooseneck coupler to give you a softer ride that both you and your horses are going to appreciate in your horse trailer.

This does feature built-in glides to ensure smooth towing, which will limit chucking and jerking to give you better control, and extend the life of your truck and trailer by minimizing wear and tear. And so what's nice about this is you're gonna have minimal maintenance. There's no springs, airbags or compressors, bearings or seals to adjust or replace. The included extension handle that you see right here, that's going to allow you to latch or unlatch the coupler from outside the truck bed, and this fail-safe latch is going to ensure that the coupler stays on the ball. So, gonna be very easy to use.

As you can see, this is the locked position, and then that's going to be the open position. And then as you can see here, we've got a hole there that you could run a padlock through to give you extra security so someone couldn't come by and unlock this, and obviously that padlock is sold separately, so if you have a padlock that will work there, you can add that on there to deter theft. The length of our extension handle is about 21 inches or so, so you're gonna be able to uncouple from outside the bed of your truck with that handle. This round tube is going to slide into your existing outer gooseneck coupler tube, and the diameter of this tube is gonna be four inches. This is made of powder-coated steel, so it's very strong, very durable.

I think it's gonna last you a long time. It's gonna do a great job of resisting the elements it's gonna be exposed to, then it has an interior polyurethane cushion. And let me grab my tape measure here real quick. I don't wanna get crazy with all the different measurements, we do have 'em listed on our product page, but just looking at the overall length from the surface that it's sitting on, we're sitting slightly under 27 inches if you can see that, so that's gonna be the overall length. But if you do decide that this is going to be exactly what you need, we would love to hear back from you regarding how you're using this, and basically your overall experience with it, so you can share your experiences with us by dropping a comment or leaving a review on this product page.

If you do leave a review, you could also add pictures of this with your towing setup to that review, and we would love to hear from you, and see those photos. Well, I think that's gonna wrap up our quick look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy, thank you for joining me.

I recently ordered a coupler assembly for my gooseneck horse trailer. The service etrailer.com provided was outstanding in every way.

by:

Received my received today. Installed it with no problems and am looking forward to getting on the road and trying it out. I did drive a 48 ft living quarter horse trailer with this receiver 1500 miles and was totally impressed.
A well made product that is a great addition to any gooseneck.

I replaced the existing coupler on my 20' 14,0000# GVW flatbed trailer with this coupler. What a difference! I think it would be conservative to say that making this change has cut the jarring from the trailer to the tow vehicle easily in half. After buying the first one of these for my own use I ordered a second one for a conversion to a customer's trailer. What a simple fix for a very annoying problem!

by:

Perfect fit. Good amount of space available to adjust the overall length. I switched from a hidden gooseneck ball to a gooseneck ball that attaches to my fifth wheel rails. This raised my ball about 4 inches and the new coupler easily provided the needed adjustment.

by:

This is the 2nd coupler of this kind we have had on our trailers. It always seems to give the trailer a smoother ride (which our horses appreciate) and I love the ease of the lock down latch.

by:

No problems at all. Easy to install. I have it on a 42' horse trailer that I pull all over the lower U.S. states.

by:

This addition to the trailer has been wonderful. The trailer pulls as smoothly as anything I’ve ever pulled. I have noticed a decrease in the bumping when coming to a stop, and when accelerating for a stop. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to smooth out their ride a bit.

by:

This is probably the way all gooseneck trailers should come from the manufacture. I put it on my 30 ft. equipment trailer for my transport business. The first job was 147 miles empty to pick up an excavator bucket & return the 147 miles. I pull with a Dodge ram 2500 4x4 Cummins turbo diesel. Amazing difference on driver comfort, cushioning to a degree that relieves the stress & fatigue i felt from the pounding before installing the CG i know is easier on the pickup as well. THANKS

by:

Been using this for one year, very happy with it. It greatly reduces the vibration between the trailer and pickup. Extremely easy to hitch and un hitch! Well worth the money.

by:

This was a nice replacement for our BullDog coupler that was over 15 years old. The locking and unlocking mechanism is very smooth. However the rod that is supplied to reach into the bed is very awkward to use.

by:

Fast shipping, product as described. Only problem packaging had ruptured on one end when we received it but no damage to the item

by:

My husband and I love this coupler. Product is exactly as described. Before installing the cushioned gooseneck coupler I could barely stand riding in the truck when we were pulling our new living quarters trailer. This cushioned hitch takes out the jarring . It’s like you barely know the trailer is back there. I would very strongly recommend this product. Thanks etrailer for the super quick delievery.

by:

This coupler is great. The cushion you get from the bushings is nice on long trips. I really like the way it locks to the ball and the way you are able to lock the coupler with a padlock, hooked to the truck or trailer just sitting.

by:

Here are some Pros and Cons that I have on this Coupler. Mind you I have only taken the trailer for a short test drive with an empty Four Horse Trailer with Living Quarters. Trailer is 32.5 on the floor and has always ridden rough when there are no horses in the trailer, smooths out as the number of horses increases, loading up the axles on the trailer.

Pros:
Design-I like that it does not take up a lot of room in the bed of the truck compared to other units. We are always hauling extra Hay/Feed and supplies in the bed when we are going to a Horse Show so like that I did not loose any bed space.

Craftsman ship-it is made extremely well, high grade steel, welds are very good, solid design

Locking Mechanism-Very easy to move the lock handle. Though I'm not sure why they give you a handle to lock and unlock it if you are using your safety chains as you should be. You are still going to need to get into the bed of the truck to attach the chains so might as well lock it while you are there.

Cons:
Ride: I was hoping to give this Coupler a very high review but I did not get the results I was looking for in regards to ride from the item. I did not do a back to back comparison with the old Coupler vs the new one, but it seemed to buck just as much going over bumps with an empty trailer. I'm sure the ride will get better with horses on the trailer and it is probably helping with wear and tear on the truck and trailer taking up some of the road shock. I used to drive a truck with an air bag system hitch so I am comparing this to that. It was a very high end unit and was not looking to spend that kind of money again.

Locking Mechanism: I know I listed this as a Pro for ease of locking, but afraid it could be too easy. As stated before we like to haul items in the bed of the truck. It could be possible for an item to hit the lock arm and move it to unlock if you are moving around in a parking lot or driveway. I am going to mitigate this by putting a clip in the lock hole of the Coupler when attached to the truck.

Overall I think it is a nice product and looking forward to see how it does with full trailer. If your on the fence I think it may be worth the try. In the picture there is a custom spacer, not included with the Coupler.

by:

I cranked down on the bolts on my trailer and it still slipped in the tube. Be sure to drill through holes and put a hitch pin in it if you actually haul any weight. I love the ball lock mechanism, but I use a lock to ensure it doesn't come unlocked by something in the bed of my truck. The cushion part seems to damper some of the jarring when hitting bumps with the trailer.

by:

this coupler does not have any holes to mount it.trying to drill 3/4 " holes is not fun.they call it cushioned but did not cushion it much.another problem is you can't see the ball to hitch it on a crew cab short bed.I ended up buying a B&W companion 5th wheel hitch.Pulls much better, and easy to hitch up.that is what you get buy trying to take a short cut.

Solid, well built and good value

by:

1+ Year review. I run this Convert-A-Ball on a 3 horse GN trailer. It does help with shock and vibration and I would not go back to a solid coupler. However, -2 stars for the way the coupler sits on the ball. The coupler is flat on the inside so it rests completely on the top of the GN ball. This causes some deformation/damage to the top of the ball and can make it difficult to remove the ball. The surface needs to be rounded to disperse weight better (like all other GN couplers I have). I will say again that it does work as advertised.

by:

This hitch assembly is far better than the slide catch original equipment. Very easy to latch and unlatch with the benefit of being shock absorbing. Well worth the price!

by:

Really nice gooseneck system

by:

Thank you for your help in finding a cushioning gooseneck fitting. The covert-a-ball extension fit perfectly in my Bradford Bed well. Once I get to actually haul with it I will send an update.

by:

GREAT!!! No more crawling in and out of the box to latch and unlatch my trailer.

by:

Excited to start going down the road with my living quarters horse trailer and having some cushion to the pickup and hopefully the horses have a better ride.

by:

OK. Just installed the convert- A - Ball Multi -Cushioned Coupler this morrin. Took about 15 min. Took it for a test drive down the I10 just a mile from my front door. [ Casa Grande AZ.] It reduced the felt bumps and road jars by about 80%. I drove down the access road for a few miles. [ uneven, repaired spots, really ruff road.] Then got on the I 10 and drove between The Pinal exit and the McCartney exit. # lane just repaved about a year ago. Did not feel any road vibration that you get at 70 MPH. Other coulper go for 2 to 3 times this much. And require a lot of up keep. I would recommend this to anyone hauling horses,or any big trailer that whats a smoother ride.

  • Convert-A-Ball 30K Gooseneck Coupler Compatibility for B&W Turnover Ball with Heavy Load
You’ve got a serious setup there, and I’m really glad you’re double checking because you’re right up near the limits where the details matter. The good news is this coupler part # CAB97FR will work with your setup from both a fit and rating standpoint. It’s designed for a 4 inch round tube and a standard 2-5/16 inch ball, so it will be compatible with your B and W Turnover Ball hitch, and the warning about “pop-in balls with levers” does not apply to your setup since B and W uses a solid...
