Convert-A-Ball 30K Gooseneck Coupler Compatibility for B&W Turnover Ball with Heavy Load

Question:

I have a 2017 RAM 3500 dually with a 30,000 pound BandW gooseneck turn over ball hitch. I tow a 29,000lb tiny home with 8000lbs vertical pin weight. The trailer has the 4” round coupler. Would this coupler be compatible and sufficient for me?

You’ve got a serious setup there, and I’m really glad you’re double checking because you’re right up near the limits where the details matter.

The good news is this coupler part # CAB97FR will work with your setup from both a fit and rating standpoint. It’s designed for a 4 inch round tube and a standard 2-5/16 inch ball, so it will be compatible with your B and W Turnover Ball hitch, and the warning about “pop-in balls with levers” does not apply to your setup since B and W uses a solid ball with the release mechanism under the bed.

In terms of capacity, this coupler is rated for 30,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 10,000 lbs vertical load, so your 29,000 lb trailer and 8,000 lb pin weight fall within those limits. That said, you are operating very close to the upper end of its rating, so everything needs to be installed correctly and kept in good condition.

I also want to be upfront that for a 4 inch round coupler, 30,000 lbs is essentially the top end rating available. There isn’t a higher capacity round-tube option to step up to, so this is about as heavy duty as it gets in this style.

The cushioning feature is a nice benefit here, especially with a load like yours, since it can help reduce chucking and stress on both the truck and trailer during towing.

So overall, yes, this is a compatible and sufficient option for your setup, just with the understanding that you’re right at the upper range of what this style of coupler is designed for.

Thank you. This is exactly the information I was looking for. I am replacing my current coupler to get the cushioning effect this will provide. I don’t see holes drilled in this coupler for the pin that goes through for mounting and height adjustment. Will I need to drill that myself?

@BrianJ Hi Brian, that’s a great follow-up. I did reach out to Convert-A-Ball to confirm, and this coupler is designed to replace the entire inner tube assembly rather than using adjustable pin holes. Instead of a through-pin setup, it’s held in place by the set bolts on your trailer’s outer tube. So you won’t need to drill any holes for adjustment. You’ll slide the new coupler into your existing outer tube, set it to the correct height, and then secure it with the bolts already on your trailer. Does your outer tube (that's welded to the trailer frame) have set bolts?

@HeatherA It does have the 2 set bolts. It also has a 3/4” through pin. I was concerned the 2 set bolts might let the coupler slip with this much pin weight.

@BrianJ I did talk to Dennis at Convert-a-ball about that concern and he said the set bolts are the standard way they hold the tube in and they haven't heard of any issues. He did say you could drill through the tube for a pin if you are comfortable doing that but he doesn't recommend drilling more than one hole. He also said, you could reach out to him directly for help with the project if you need to. Just let me know and I can get you his number.
