How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

  • Recommended Replacement Jack For Lippert Smart Jack With Damaged Buttons Causing Water To Get In
I have a complete replacement jack option for you, but the buttons on your Lippert Smart Jack # LC643589 are not replaceable so the only option is a complete replacement. If your jack is still within the 1-year warranty period then I recommend reaching out to whoever you purchased from to get it replaced. If you are outside of your warranty period then you should take a look at the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 24" Lift - 3,500 lbs - White, Item # JET-3555....

  • What Prevents Corrosion from Occurring on Inline Fuse of Powered Trailer Jack
Hey John, so corrosion is happening because of moisture getting into the fuse slot. Keeping that as dry as possible will help but also putting dielectric grease like the part # LT37574 on the fuse and the fuse slot will prevent the corrosion as well.

  • Troubleshooting Electric A-Frame Trailer Tongue Jack, # JET-3555 Blowing Fuses
You should be able to manually crank the Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack, # JET-3555, up and down by removing the rubber plug on the side and inserting the manual handle or a properly sized socket wrench. Turn clockwise to extend the jack and counter-clockwise to retract it. I spoke with one of our installers about the fuses blowing. He stated that the power wire could be shorting to ground or there could be an internal component that is shorting out. Make sure all ground connections are...

  • Travel Speed of 3,500 lb Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack
I reached out to the manufacturer, Stromberg Carlson, who told me their 3,500 lb Electric Trailer Jack # JET-3755 (Black) and # JET-3555 (White) has a travel speed of 10 inches over 55.5 seconds with no load. This is a relatively normal speed for a jack of this type and overall, these Stromberg Carlson jacks represent a great value. I have added links to video reviews of both trailer jacks for you to take a look at.

  • Troubleshooting JET-3500 Jack that Wont Extend/Retract But Light Still Works
Since the jack grounds through the mounting assembly the first thing I would do is check the condition of the main ground of the trailer and for corrosion near the mounting assembly and clean as necessary. Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. An inadequate ground would allow the light to still work but could prevent it from...

  • Why Would a Powered Trailer Jack Only Work When Connected to Tow Vehicle
The Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack # JET-3555 grounds through the mounting bracket of the jack. If your trailer isn't hooked up to your tow vehicle when you are trying to use the jack the problem would be that it isn't grounding properly. If you run the ground of your trailer battery to the trailer frame it should work.

  • Troubleshooting a Stromberg Carlson Trailer Jack # JET-3500 that Was Stuck with Blown Fuse
What is probably occurring on your jack is that it has been extended too far at some point and has become stuck. Trying to move it in either direction draws too much power as the motor tries to push the leg free. This cause the fuse to blow. What many electric jack manufacturers will do is to smash or otherwise distort the end of the screw that turns to move the leg up and down to prevent it from extending to far. If it does end up extending too far the threads will become permanently...

It looks like from the photos I was able to find, the 2003 Coachmen Clipper Sport 106 will take a standard A-frame trailer jack. For that reason you can use something like the Buyers Products A-Frame Jack w/ Support Foot - 15" Travel - 2,000 lbs # 3370091260, which will work with trailers that have a tongue weight of up to 2000-lbs-so it's well rated for your trailer. Short answer is Yes. The Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 24" Lift - 3,500 lbs - White # JET-3555 has the strength to work on your 2017 Casita Spirit TT. It will mount to an A-Frame you just need to make sure you have the space to mount it. It is a bolt on design with mounting holes that fit 3 inch spacing. You will need to drill holes in the A-Frame however to match the holes in the jack. The outer tube is 2-3/16 inches wide. So if you have a gap that it...

  • How to Wire Up and Install Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack, # JET-3500
The Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack, # JET-3555, runs off a 12 volt battery. The best source for power would be from a 12 volt battery (like a car battery) mounted on the trailer. The red power wire on the Electric A-Frame Tongue Jack, # JET-3500, is the power wire and it will attach to the positive battery terminal on your trailer battery. First, remove the fuse in the in-line fuse holder on the red wire. Mount the jack to the trailer and tighten it down. The jack grounds through the mounting...

  • Do All A-Frame Trailers have Same 3 Bolt Pattern for Trailer Jacks
Yes, basically all A-frame trailers are going to have the same bolt pattern for installing a trailer jack. Typically the jacks have mounting holes that are somewhat slotted too to help with some variances. The bolt pattern you mentioned having on your trailer is compatible with the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-3555 so this will work great for you.

  • Troubleshooting a Jammed Electric Trailer Jack
It is likely that the interior gears have stripped due to the jack over-extending. Since manually cranking the jack is unsuccessful, you will probably need to replace the jack, as the jack manufacturers will smash or otherwise distort the end of the screw that turns to move the leg up and down to prevent it from over-extending. If it does end up extending too far the threads will become permanently cross-threaded and it will never work right again.

  • Troubleshooting Electric Trailer Jack that Doesnt work When Not Connected to a Tow Vehicle
The problem is most likely the ground circuit for the jack. Since most trailers ground to the tow vehicle it sounds like the jack isn't able to ground properly when you are trying to power it with just your trailer. The jack grounds through it's mounting hardware to the trailer frame. If the trailer isn't grounding to a vehicle like when it is connected to your vehicle it won't work.

  • Troubleshooting a Electric Jack that will Extend but not Retract
It sounds like the switch in the jack is bad and should be replaced. Typically when an electric jack will go one direction but not the other its because the switch is broken. You might try checking all the fuses on the jack also. Since your trailer is brand new I would imagine there is some kind of warranty that would cover your jack. I would try contacting where you bought the trailer.

  • Troubleshooting Electric Tongue Jack That Lights Up But Won’t Extend or Retract
Your power issue could be due to one or more of a number of potential causes. These could include loose/corroded battery cables, batteries that need a good long charge with an AC-powered charger like # CTEK56353 to top them off, batteries that can no longer take a full charge due to age or a bad ground at the jack mounting plate. • A-Frame Electric Trailer Jack Won't Run but the Light Works
If the jack light is working but the motor won't that means that the jack is getting power so we can rule out the fuse/breaker being the problem. It is possible that the battery the jack is connected to has enough power to run the light but not the motor. The battery may need to be charged or replaced. A local auto parts store can test the battery. Another possible cause is a weak ground. The light doesn't need to have the best ground but the motor which draws more amperage does need a...
