When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for FAQ Coupler Latch Styles

Hey guys, this is Jake here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be talking about trailer couplers and the differences between them. The main difference and the thing that's going to affect you whether you're out on the job site or you're at home connecting your trailer is going to be the style of latch. And that's what we wanna mainly focus on today. Today, we've got seven types of trailer tongue couplers, just to show you the differences between the latches so that you can decide from our experience, you can decide what latch is gonna be best for you. I'm gonna be sharing some of my personal experience with these different style latches and things I've liked and things I've not liked.

So if we start up here at our first one we're gonna have a trigger style latch which is gonna be just like your traditional trailers, probably trailers you're used to using. It's gonna have a trigger on the backside that you pull and flip it up. So, once you're coupled onto a ball, you just simply lock it down and then insert your pin. Easy enough to use but as time goes on they can get more and more difficult to use. You may have to lubricate it a little bit so it operates smoothly.

These two are gonna both be yoke style which happened to be my least favorite because, just because of how they disconnect, it's, when they're connected it's just like any other coupler, but to disconnect it you have to pull up on this trigger thing here, and then lift up. But then there's nothing that really holds it up and it can easily just slide down into place. Yeah and as it gets older, it gets harder and harder to use, a lot of people like this because of the reassurance because of this yoke itself. It goes around the front of the ball so it's another safety feature, that if something we're to happen it's not gonna come off. Another yoke style, except this one has happens to have a little indent here on the back.

That will actually hold it up a little bit, to my liking the indents just not deep enough. And then we have the Demco EZ Latch. This is a concept that you don't have to pull this trigger unless you're releasing the coupler from your trailer ball on your ball mount. You just lift up, then you can raise your trailer up but otherwise this latch stays down and you just lower the, your trailer onto your ball. This will raise up just a hair and then lock back down into place.

And you don't have to worry about getting this to relax or anything like that. I've had mine on my personal trailer for about two years now and I haven't lubricated anything and it still works like the day I put it on. Another trigger style. This one just has an easy grab finger grip, and you lift up once you drop your coupler onto your ball again, pull it down. The one problem I see with this is if you're using this with gloves, it's designed for a finger without gloves. So if you have lighter pair of gloves on, then that's okay. But if you have winter gloves on you're not gonna be able to use this very easily. So you're gonna have to take your gloves off, then lift up the latch and then couple your trailer. And during that whole time your hands could be getting very cold. And then we come down to our last style which is going to be a collar-lok. One of them here is going to have a, a assisting tab that you pull back and it allows you to uncouple your trailer from your vehicle. The thing I don't like about these and a number one complaint that we get, is that this collar is under so much tension. That when you go to push this side piece in it pinches your fingers in here. Well, the problem is, is you're not really supposed to be closing this side of it with your hand, because this is under a lot of tension. If your trailer's hooked up, you can imagine you can just, you can either kick it, which is what I usually do. Or you can grab something like a tool or a rubber mallet you can keep in your truck and then tap that with it and then the collar will slide over and close the coupler up. Now the main reason why the easy latch is one of my favorite couplers out on the market right now is because of the easy latch system. What you have to do is, you don't have to do anything make sure the latch is down. And then once you go to lower your trailer onto your ball, the weight of the trailer will push this spring loaded mechanism up and then lock it back down into place and then it can't come off. And then when you go to release, just lock it back, lift it up and then lock it back down into place. And you're ready to up your trailer again. I have just had so many issues with other trailer couplers not being able to latch. Once you're on the ball you've gotta either push your trailer back or pull your trailer forward just a little bit, to be able to get this to latch. I have this on my personal trailer and four employees here at etrailer have them on their personal trailers just in our back parking lot. That just goes to tell you how convenient it is to be able to use this coupler. Well guys, hopefully this video was able to help you decide what latch style is right for you and your needs.     The top width of the Titan Brake Actuator - Painted - Disc - 2-5/16" Ball - Weld On - 12,500 lbs # T4749600 you were looking at measures right at 4" as shown in the included diagram. This will be the exact same dimension as the # T1607500, but you will need the # T4749600 for disc brakes as it has higher pressure which is required for disc brakes. The # T4749600 will be an exact replacement for the # T1607500 if that is what you have on your trailer, and is designed to fit 3" wide tongues...

    The Titan Brake Actuator part # T4749600 does not come with a lockout so in order to reverse you'll need to install a lockout solenoid, the Replacement Solenoid Valve for Titan Brake Actuators with Reverse Lockouts part # T4748800. This would also require a 5-way trailer connector so you'll also need the Curt Trailer Connector Adapter part # C57187 and Hopkins Wiring Harness part # HM37918.     Almost all trailer brake actuators are designed for 3 inch wide trailer frames, the only option would be to weld a coupler on top of your 3-1/2 inch frame. The issue with this for you is that the options for those only accept a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball, so if it all possible you would need to switch to that, with either the 1 inch diameter shank 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # C40005 or 1-1/4 inch diameter shank 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # C40030.
