When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

Electric Reverse Lockout

The electric reverse lockout on this trailer brake actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. The solenoid wires into your trailer connector - which connects to your tow vehicle - so that it can detect when you are in reverse. When your vehicle is in reverse, the solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer's brakes, thus allowing you to back up your rig. To use the lockout feature, you must have a 5-pole flat, 6-way round, or 7-pole trailer connector.

eZ-Latch Coupler

The coupler portion of this trailer brake actuator features a simple-to-use latching mechanism known as the eZ-Latch. With this mechanism, hooking up is as easy as dropping the coupler over your trailer hitch ball. The latch does not need to be tugged or manually activated to allow the ball into the coupler socket, nor does it have to be secured in place. Just make sure that the coupler is properly lined up with the ball when you lower it, and the rest is automatic. Disengaging the coupler is just as effortless. Simply lift up the contoured handle and the coupler socket will automatically release its grip on the ball.

Demco eZ-Latch in Use

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Made of sturdy steel, this hydraulic trailer brake actuator features a durable zinc finish that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. This finish has a 500-hour salt spray rating, making the actuator perfect for marine use. Even the master cylinder is made of a corrosion-proof composite to further ensure durability for marine applications. The eZ-Latch's sleek, ergonomically designed handle is also constructed of a durable composite material that's corrosion-proof, allowing it to withstand whatever the road and the elements dish out.

Video Transcript for Demco Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - DM8164311 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator with drop and electric lockout. Now when you apply the brakes in your towed vehicle, your vehicle slows down and momentum actually pushes the trailer towards the rear of the vehicle. The hydraulic actuator is triggered as the trailer moves forward, so when this happens the actuator contracts and applies force to the master cylinder, which is internal. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailers brakes. This hydraulic actuator activates the trailers brakes when the towed vehicle slows or stops. Here at the back you're going to notice the connection for the brake line and it's going to have the electrical connectors two-wire design. It does feature electric reverse lock out that lets you back up without activating the trailer brakes.

That solenoid activates automatically whenever you shift into the reverse gear. Here at the front of the unit we're going to have an easy latch coupler mechanism with the corrosion proof composite latch handle. This allows for simple, secure hook-up and disconnect. What this easy latch mechanism does is it's lets you hook up when the latch is in the closed position. All you have to do is drop a couple over the hitch ball, the latch will snap into place automatically, and that's all there is to it. If you want to install a coupler pin and clip or a coupler pin and lock, there is a small hole to do that.

You run that though, that's going to keep the internal wedge from being able to operate and function. That item is sold separately. A few measurement you need to know if you're interested in one of those. The holes on the unit will accept a pin with a diameter of 5/16" and the usable span or pin length needed edge to edge is going to be about 2 3/4". Now when it comes to the master cylinder, that's going to be a composite master cylinder that's very durable and efficient. It's glass reinforced nylon construction.

It's designed to resist rust and corrosion. It's going to have a nice large reservoir that provides increased capacity for brake fluid, and you're going to have the automotive style diaphragm cap that creates an completely enclosed system to help prevent contamination of the fluid. The unit also includes the breakaway system. In the event where your trailer and towed vehicle separate most of the time your safety chains are going to do a good job at keeping the components connected. That way you can get out and fix the situation, but in some cases the safety chains actually fail. The breakaway kit, this hook and clip connect to the towed vehicle.

In the event where the unit separates from the towed vehicle and the safety chains fail, the towed vehicle will actually yank really hard on this cable. When it yanks on that cable, it moves this lever to the brake on position. That activates the trailer brakes and brings your trailer to an eventual, safe stop to prevent a complete runaway situation. Now the unit's constructed of a durable, steel construction. It's going to have a nice, sturdy, reinforced outer casing and this is going to have zinc-coated finish which is going to do a great job at providing protection against rust and corrosion. Now it's a bolt-on installation. It's going go have a five hole design on each side, so five mount holes on each side of actuator. Mounting hardware is not included. It is going to mount on a straight 3" wide trailer tongue. Product is made here in the USA. It's designed for trailers with hydraulic disc brakes. It's designed to fit onto a hitch ball size of 2 5/16" and it's going to offer a 4" drop. Now when it comes to the gross towing weight capacity we're looking at 16,000 pounds. Maximum tongue weight capacity is 1,600 pounds. Overall length of the unit is going to measure about 34 1/2" long. That's going to do it for today's look at the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator with drop and electric lockout.
