Question:
I have a 2018 Toyota Highlander XLE V6 FWD that Ive confirmed via VIN is capable of towing 5000lbs. It doesnt have the factory tow package so Id need to add the appropriate equipment. Im looking at towing a Nucamp Tab 320. Can you provide a list of equipment that I would need to add to my SUV in order to begin towing? I dont think Nucamp recommends a WDH but they do recommend sway control. Id also need a brake controller and necessary trailer and brake connectors. Thank you.

Hi Vaughn,
Since your 2018 Toyota Highlander doesn't have a tow package, we'll need to start by adding a wiring harness to the vehicle for the trailer lights. I suggest using the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness w/4-Pole part # C56217, it will plug into the existing ports behind the trim so you can add trailer wiring without any splicing and give you a 4-flat that'll work with your trailer's lights so they match up with your Highlander. I've included a link to us installing this harness on the same year Highlander for reference while you're installing it.
To add a brake controller, you'll need to use the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controllers part # ETBC7. The 4-way flat from the wiring harness will plug into the 7 and 4-way connector and you'll use the included 10-gauge wire to run power from the battery and the brake signal back to the connector as well. For a brake controller, I recommend using the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller part # RED52VR. It's a proportional controller, so it'll activate your trailer's brakes at the same time and with the same force as your vehicle is braking. Since it's a knob, it'll install easily out of the way in the dash withe the mounting panel # 331-TPSI-002 and makes adjusting the braking strength simple.
For a weight distribution hitch, the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Hitch part # EQ37060ET will be perfect for the job. The Nucamp Tab 320 has a GVWR of 3,000lbs, so you're tongue weight is 300lbs. The # EQ37060ET is rated for tongue weights from 200-600lb of tongue weight and 300lbs falls almost in the middle which is perfect operating range for a weight distribution hitch. It's 4-point sway control system will level out your ride and help stop your trailer from swaying before it starts.
Do you have your first trip planned with your Nucamp 320 yet?
