Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Included Trailer Sway Bar

The included friction-style sway control reduces trailer sway caused by winds, passing traffic, curving roads, or sudden maneuvers. As soon as your trailer begins to move out of line, the friction pads inside the unit will slide against one another and create resistance to help prevent further side-to-side movement.

The Curt round bar weight distribution system is installed with the included friction sway control arm

Having a trailer sway bar allows you to easily dial in the amount of tension with the turn of a handle. If it's too loose, the friction pads won't have enough contact against the telescoping arm to control sway effectively. On the other hand, if you crank the handle clockwise, making the friction pads work harder than they need to, your ride will be a bit too rigid.

While its adjustability is nice (even if it takes you a few trips to get it just right), this sway bar doesn't play well with surge-type actuators, and it will have to be removed when backing up and any time you tow on wet or slippery roads.

By the way, if your trailer is really tall, long, or heavy, or if you tow through a lot of windy areas and sway is still an issue - even after you've tightened the unit to the max - you can always add another sway bar onto the other side of this hitch. The hitch head is built with mounting holes on both sides, so you can run 2 sway controls at the same time to really hold your trailer in line.

Adjusting the Head Tilt

A close-up image of the Curt MV hitch head shows the rivet and washers during installation

  • Adding washers adds tension, but it's not a case of "the more the merrier"
  • Stacking washers can be a pain, but you only need to do it once, or if your tongue weight changes

When you install this system, you'll have to adjust the tilt of the head to ensure proper leverage. To do this, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert it into the head assembly. Once the spacer is in place, tighten the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank. To check if your truck and trailer are level, you'll need to hook up and release your tongue jack. If you find that the rear of your truck is still sagging, add washers to increase leverage. If it looks like too much weight has been taken off your truck's rear axle and is sitting on your front axle, try removing a few washers.

While the washer-stacking method allows you to fine-tune the setup at the time of installation, it's going to require some patience. It can be time consuming because, if you don't get everything right the first time (which, you probably won't), you'll have to take the head unit apart to adjust the washers. You might have to adjust a few chain links to get the tension in the bars just right too. Not to mention that you might have to repeat this process if your tongue weight changes or if you swap out your tow vehicle.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • What is Difference Between Curt TruTrack 2P Weight Distribution System and the Curt Round Bar
Hey Rey, so I prefer the Curt TruTrack 2P part # C69JR over the Round Bar kit part # C17062 because the 2P has better ground clearance and has it's friction sway control built into the spring bar hangers instead of having a separate friction sway control unit that has to be installed and setup every time. They both function about the same though aside from that which is why the 2P is just the better option.

  • Best Weight Distribution Hitch For 2,600 lb Snowmobile Trailer
Hey Jered, thanks for reaching out. We do have a weight distribution system that will work for your snowmobile trailer, but the Curt # C17062 you were looking at is not correct. This is intended for trailers with a tongue weight around 800-1000 lbs. Your tongue weight is probably more like 300-400 lbs. So this would be rated much too high for your trailer. There would not be enough tension on the spring bars so you would not get good sway control. What I recommend instead is the Blue Ox...

  • Can You Back Up With Sway Control Bar Removed From Curt MV Weight Distribution System?
You can back up with the Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17052. This does not include any type of sway control. If you are referring to the Curt MV Weight Distribution System w/ Friction Sway Control # C17062 then you only need to remove the Sway Unit # 17200 to back up with the weight distribution bars still attached.

  • Why Can't Trailer with Weight Distribution Hitch Be Reversed
With weight distribution systems like the Curt part # C17062 the reason backing up isn't recommended is because if you jackknife the trailer the spring bars will either pop out of the system with a lot of tension/force or a component of the system will bend/break. So what you can do is back up basically totally straight with the system installed or you can remove the bars before making tight turn maneuvers.

  • 12 inch Long Weight Distribution Shank Used on Multiple Trucks and Rated for at Least 7,500 Pounds
It sounds like you not only need longer shank but an adjustable ball mount as well. I recommend the Pro Series, part # 63071. It has two hitch balls; a 2 inch at 10,000 pounds capacity and a 2-5/16 inch at 14,000 pounds so it'll be plenty heavy enough for you. It measures 12-1/16 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the hitch ball and also provides up to 5-7/8 inches of drop. I've linked a video for you to check out as well.

  • Sway Control Recommendation for Vehicle with 1-1/4 inch Hitch
We have friction sway control units that will work great to prevent the type of sway you are describing. For that the Curt part # 17200 would be a really great option. You'd use the bracket part # RP26005 installed on your hitch ball and then you'd be set. Friction sway control was designed to fight the exact type of sway you mentioned that is caused by wind from passing semis or just high winds in general. Proper trailer loading makes the biggest difference in preventing sway as well....

  • Does Weight Distribution Need to Disconnect When Backing Up
Hey Chuck, great question but you would only need to disconnect the spring bars of the Curt WD system part # C17062 from the hangers on the trailer frame and if it's really tight the friction sway control system. With that said, like with any WD system if you are backing up mostly straight you can leave the system installed but if it's a tighter turn than what you would find yourself going forward the spring bars have to come off.

  • Solution for Needing Weight Distribution for Trailer with 2-5/16 inch Hitch Ball
Hey Eli, it is really odd that the weight distribution systems that include hitch balls basically have 2 inch balls when you'd think the higher rated 2-5/16 inch hitch ball would be a lot more common. So you'd need to go with a system that doesn't have a ball like the part # FA92-00-1000 which happens to be rated for up to 1,000 lb tongue weight. For a hitch ball then you'd want the part # 19286. Do you know what your loaded trailer tongue weight is?

  • Will Curt Round Bar Weight Distribution System Fit V-Nose With 32" Of Space
Hey John! The # C17062 is to close to really know with only 32" from the coupler to the trailer body. The bars sit approximately 30" back (they measure 30-5/8") and that bracket is 4" wide so it would be another 2". I'm assuming your 32" measurement is on the inside (which would be the short side) meaning you have a little more space available on the outside. Is that correct? Just to be accurate, when referring to tongue weight, it is the tongue weight of your loaded trailer plus the weight of the cargo that sits behind the rear axle of your vehicle.
