What Jeep Models Are Best For Flat Towing?
Updated 06/19/2026 | Published 06/17/2026 >
Question:
Hi I have a question I cannot seem to find an answer. Im wanting to purchase a jeep to pull behind and rv. What years can be flat towed without pulling drive line or more than 50miles. I see some say 2017 and new Wrangler and some say even older. Do you know someone that can answer this as I can get a hitch and parts needed from you. I just dont want to purchase the wrong year and not be compatible . Wanting to purchase a blue ox hot h, brake controller and light wire kit. Thank you very much

Hey Frank, thanks for reaching out. If flat towing is your priority, the Wrangler is still one of the easiest and most popular choices out there. The key is getting a model with a manual transfer case that has a true Neutral position. Those can be flat towed indefinitely without disconnecting driveshafts or worrying about mileage limits.
For Wranglers, you're generally safe with:
2007-2018 Wrangler JK 4WD with a two-speed transfer case
2018-Current Wrangler JL 4WD with a two-speed transfer case
Most older TJ Wranglers (1997-2006) with the proper transfer case
The confusion comes from the fact that not every Wrangler trim has the same drivetrain. A Sport, Willys, Rubicon, etc. can usually be flat towed if equipped with the correct transfer case, while some special configurations may have different procedures.
If I were shopping specifically for a toad behind an RV today, I'd probably focus on a 2018+ Wrangler JL. They're easier to find, ride nicer than the older JKs, have excellent aftermarket support for base plates and tow bars, and can be flat towed right from the factory when properly equipped. The Gladiator is also flat towable if you like those.
Once you decide, let me know the year, make and model and I'm happy to put together a flat tow package for you.
Did you have your eye on anything specific yet?
