Question:

I will be buying two Furrion Chill Cubes. My question is, how does the ducted system work? I am assuming that it has a mode that would turn off and shut the normal circulation door, sending the air thru the ducts. I was trying to find info about it but havent come across any yet. If you guys have any info it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi JD; the Furrion Chill Cube # FR49TD air distribution box has a vent on it you can open and close. See the picture attached below. When it is closed it forces more of the air through the ducted system.

Assuming you have a ducted system you will need one of the following:

-Furrion Chill Cube RV Air Conditioner w Air Distribution Box - Ducted - 18,000 Btu - Black # FR39TD

-Furrion Chill Cube RV Air Conditioner w Air Distribution Box - Ducted - 18,000 Btu - White # FR99TD

-Furrion Chill Cube RV AC w/ Air Distribution Box, Thermostat - Ducted # FR69TD (if you have a furnace)

-Furrion Chill Cube RV AC w/ Air Distribution Box, Thermostat - Ducted # FR49TD (if you have a furnace)

You can also choose to use your existing wall thermostat to run the furnace, or use a simple thermostat like # DMC84RR. The AC system will run off of the remote and ADB controls.

@Chris the # FR49TD is designed for a ducted setup with a furnace since it includes the wall thermostat. If you don't have a furnace to control you only need the unit that comes with the air distribution box and remote. You can choose from the following based on color and whether or not you have a furnace: -Furrion Chill Cube RV Air Conditioner w Air Distribution Box - Ducted - 18,000 Btu - Black # FR39TD (no furnace) -Furrion Chill Cube RV Air Conditioner w Air Distribution Box - Ducted - 18,000 Btu - White # FR99TD (no furnace) -Furrion Chill Cube RV AC w/ Air Distribution Box, Thermostat - Ducted - 18,000 Btu - Black # FR49TD (with furnace) -Furrion Chill Cube RV AC w/ Air Distribution Box, Thermostat - Ducted - 18,000 Btu - White # FR69TD (with furnace)

@RobinH We discussed roof a/c units recently, and today a friend and I installed our 2 new Chill Cubes, both ducted. All went well, and they’re working very nicely! But I cannot figure out a way to push refrigerated air into both the front and rear ducts. In our 2008 Fleetwood Southwind 32vs, the twin a/c’s are maybe 7 feet apart. Rectangular ducts run out of the front and back of each chamber, but for the life of me I cannot see how to get cold air to the front, as the 2-piece interior baffle (clever design!) separates the front (return air, where the filter is) from the rear cold air chamber, above the louvers where the cold air comes out. So I’d pretty much figured it couldn’t be done, until I read a reply today in your Q and A column that said sure, cold air will be pushed out both the front and back when the louvers are closed. How do I do this? Wouldn’t the refrigerated air have to go thru the warm return air compartment? It would have to get past the interior baffle, that as I said, does a great job of isolating the two compartments and preventing ice-up, which has been a problem in our a/c units in the past. I hate to cut a hole thru that pretty baffle to install some kind of duct, but I don’t want cold air mixing with the return air. Right? Thanks for any help you can provide. .

@RobertL I wouldn't cut or modify the divider since it's there to keep the return and supply air separated. A single north/south duct like yours is common, but if the front section isn't actually connected to the A/C opening, closing the louvers won't send air that direction. If that's how Fleetwood built your coach, the only way to get airflow both ways would be to modify the ductwork.

@RobinH Thank you, Robin. Thats how it looked to me, so I’ll be leaving that baffle alone. We are using the front a/c as a non-ducted unit, dumping cold air down thru the louvers. This works very well! Strangely, if we shut that front louver, not much cold air comes out of the (2) ceiling vents located in the short run between front and rear Chill Cubes. The only thing I can think of is that this refrigerated air is flowing into the rear a/c units return air chamber, and then as it hits the baffle going…where? Up and out? I imagine so. So, as the ‘tech’ that helped me install the units suggested, I should block that cold air from getting into the rear a/c, maybe stuff a t-shirt in the duct and/or use (real) duct tape to close it off. Tired of me yet??? I have one more hard question. I know the two remotes function as thermostats and temp sensors. And as infra-red remotes, must be ‘line of sight’, as in pointed at the ADB’s to operate the controls. Works for us. THAT said, operating the Chill Cube controls using the remotes is one thing, having them work as temp sensors and thermostats something different entirely. Do they have to be within sight of the ADB’s to serve as thermostats/temp sensors? We’ll rarely use them to operate the controls, preferring the overhead control buttons on the ADB. But right now the rear (bedroom) remote is stashed away in a nightstand, out of line of sight, and maybe isn’t working as a thermostat… This will make a difference when I mount their neat little holders today. @What5 do you mean the air distribution box (ADB)? If you have one of the ducted setups without an ADB this system will not work. The ADB is required to run the AC at this time.
