Question:

My 2025 GMC Sierra 2500 AT4 toggles back and forth between trailer connectedinch and trailer disconnected. I pull a number of different trailers without this same message. This a new to us rv trailer. Both the trailer plug and the female plug on the vehicle have been cleaned with spray contact cleaner. Any idea on how to fix this?

Hi Landon,

Does the new trailer you're towing have LED lights on it? LED lights draw very little current compared to incandescent bulbs and newer trucks, especially GM and Ford, use sensitive trailer detection modules that look for specific voltage, resistance, and current to determine that a trailer is connected. LED lights usually don't have enough electrical load for the truck to recognize that the trailer is connected and will flip between "trailer connected" and "trailer disconnected" messages like what you're seeing. There's an easy solution to this thankfully, all you need is a plug-in adapter that helps your truck's computer recognize the trailer's signals. The Curt 7-way Trailer Adapter for Towing Trailers with LED Lights part # C57003 will plug into your existing 7-way to provide a new one that works with trailers with LED lights due to built-in resistors that enable your truck's computer to recognize that a trailer is connected.

What is the new RV that you're towing with your truck?

I was experiencing the same issues with my 2022 Chevy HD. The dealer had no answers, but etrailer did. The 7-way adapter fixed my problem with LED trailer lights. It also fixed the problem with the electric brakes on my LED equipped bass boat trailer locking when backing up.

@KurtB Super glad we could help! It's always great when a solution is as simple as plugging something in.

I had the same problem on my 2017 Ford F350. The adapter corrected my problem

@Mike. There’s a specific Furion adapter for that. It works well. I had to use that on 2 different trailers. New trailer doesn’t have a Furion camera but has the LED light issue. Strangely the Furion adapter was no help there. However, the Curt LED adapter solved the LED light issue for me. Thanks GM reinventing the trailer harness wheel. Only negative I’ll give this Curt adapter is when pulling a bumper the adapter can scratch up the rear bumper on GM truck due to the bulky sharp plastic around the plug.

@Sean You're correct, we do have a Furrion version of this adapter as well! It's the Furrion 7-way Vehicle Power Adapter for Furrion RV Observation Camera part # FR87PR. Because this adapter's job is to provide more power, it creates enough electrical load for the truck to realize there is a trailer attached. I think it gets missed due to the name, as its original purpose is to help power the Furrion Vision S observation camera system.
