How to Add a 7-Way Connector and a Brake Controller to a 2017 Toyota Highlander

Updated 03/04/2025 | Published 03/01/2025

Question:

Want to install the RED52VR on my 2017 Highlander which has factory hitch and 4 pin wiring in place. Need to add the 7 pin and all the necessary hardware but not sure which kit to purchase. The video mentions a 40 amp and a 20 amp breakers being installed but I don’t see a kit with those?

Hey Greg! To add a 7-way connector to your 2017 Highlander, you'll need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller item # ETBC7. The kit includes a pre-wired 7- and 4-way trailer connector that mounts easily at the rear of your vehicle with an included bracket. This kit is designed for use on a vehicle, like yours with an existing 4-way flat trailer connector and plugs directly into it. It includes the necessary 20 amp, 30 amp, and 40 amp circuit breakers.

The item # ETBC7 will give you everything you need to install the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness item # RED52VR. Since you have a Highlander, I recommend adding the Mounting Panel for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controller Control Knob item # 331-TPSI-002. This has been specifically designed to fit in one of the knock outs on your dash. It'll give you a factory clean installation look.

I have linked a couple of installation videos below so you can see how to get these parts set up. Feel free to throw any additional questions in the comment box below.
