Question:
I have a 2014 Ford Edge Limited with a tow package. It comes with a Class II hitch. I recently bought a 2017 R-pod 178 trailer that came with a weight distribution hitch which requires a Class III hitch. Should I replace the factory hitch? Is there extra stability worth it?

Yes, I recommend the Class III Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, # 75992 for your 2014 Ford Edge. This fully welded trailer hitch receiver bolts onto your Ford Edge's frame, no welding required. This has a maximum gross trailer weight of 4,000 lbs. and a max tongue weight: 400 lbs. and it can be used with a used with weight distribution system.
You will want a trailer brake controller installed in your 2014 Ford Edge for towing the R-pod 178. If you do not already have a flat 4-pole installed, you will need one; I suggest the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness, # HM11140695. Once you have a working 4-pole trailer connector you will just need the controller itself plus the # ETBC7 installation kit to expand the 4-pole to a 7-way RV plug that has the needed hot pin for brake controller. Please note the linked installation video below showing this on a 2011 Ford Edge. I have also linked two helpful articles on brake controller installations.
I recommend the Prodigy P2 proportional brake controller # 90885 from Tekonsha as this is one of the most reliable and easy-to-use controllers available.
Your Edge does not have a quick-connect under-dash port for a brake controller so your application will be a hard-wired installation. Each step is illustrated in the video.
