Trailer Hitch Rated for 10K Towing for a 2003 Dodge Sprinter with 140 inch Wheelbase and DRW

Updated 07/31/2019 | Published 07/30/2019

Question:

Hi, I noticed that this Curt hitch #14250 is a class IV hitch, but it mentions that its specifically for single rear wheel 140inch wb 3500 Dodge Sprinters. I have a 2003 Dodge Sprinter 3500 140WB that is Dual Rear Wheel and I would like to use a class IV hitch rated up to 10k lbs. Will this one work with my dual rear wheels? Or if not, is there another class IV hitch that will? Thanks for your help.

The Curt Class IV Trailer Hitch # 14250 will only fit if your 2003 sprinter has the 140 inch Wheelbase with Single Rear Wheels. Since you have a 140 inch Wheelbase with Dual Rear Wheels the next best option is the Curt Class III Trailer Hitch # 13265 which is rated for 6K Towing/600 lbs Tongue but then jumps up to 10K Towing/1K Tongue when used with a weight distribution (WD) system like the Equal-i-zer w/ 4-Point Sway Control # EQ37120ET.

Please note that your Sprinter must be rated for this higher towing weight capacity and be compatible with a WD system in order to safely use this setup. If it is and you choose to use the system I mentioned above (which has a tongue weight range of 800 lbs - 1,200 lbs) you also need a 1-7/8" thin-walled socket # EQ70-00-4800 to install the hitch ball.

For a larger towing capacity like this you will likely need a brake controller as well. I recommend installing the Hopkins 4-Way # 46255 along with the Wiring Kit # ETBC7L so that you can use the Curt Echo # C51180 which is controlled via an Android or Apple smart device via Bluetooth connection.
