The Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller - Wireless # C51180 can be hard mounted to the trailer but it cannot have any flop or movement of the unit because it is inertia based and needs to be able to find the consistent point to monitor movement from. The direction of the controller isn't an issue so if mounted to the side frame at an angle is okay. You can use an extension like the Curt Universal 5th Wheel/Gooseneck 7-Way Extension - 7' Long # C56080 which can be shortened or coiled up, but then hard mounted to your trailer using the Hopkins Universal Mounting Bracket for 7-Way # HM48625. There are shorter extensions like # TLW6021 but that manufacturer has higher costs for those short extensions so I recommend instead shortening the extension to your custom desired length.
If you want to have a more secure mount then I recommend using the Autowbrake controller # 3430001. This is designed precisely for that function.
The Autowbrake installs on the trailer and wires to the trailer wiring, usually using a junction box.
