All the hitches available for the Toyota Matrix are either Class I or II which use a 1-1/4 inch receiver tube. This being said, there's still options available that might work for you.
For the best capacity, I'd recommend the Curt Class II hitch, part # C12013 which has a 250lb tongue weight capacity and a 2500lb towing capacity. For non trailer loads like bike racks and cargo carriers, the hitch warranty stipulates that a stabilizing strap like part # 18050 should be used.
Most folks ask this question when they have a hitch accessory that's designed for a 2 inch hitch, and their vehicle doesn't have an available 2 inch hitch.
In this situation, you'd be best off replacing your hitch accessory for something that'd designed for a 1-1/4 inch hitch. There are adapters available, such as part # HTAD, but using an adapter will reduce the capacity of your hitch by 50%.
The Curt Class II Hitch I recommended would allow you to carry 4 bikes, using a bike rack like the Thule Hitching Post Pro, part # TH934XTR.
