Are Replacement Spring Bars Available for Old Draw-Tite Weight Distribution Head 7120

Updated 01/05/2015 | Published 01/03/2015

Question:

I have a draw tite trunnion WD hitch head, the markings stamped on it are 7120 0505TD, on the printed label it shows 06623-099 in the lower corner and V5 in the right corner. On that label, it shows weight ratings of 1200, 800 and 600 depending on the spring bars used apparently. Unlike some of the Reese WD heads Ive owned that have the flip pins on the top that keeps them in place these appear to allow the trunnion to slide out via an opening at the bottom. It has the ability to use a friction sway bar on the left or right or both. The 1200 LB rated trunion bars are model # 81516 and also have a V5 marking. I use this setup to tow a long, heavy cargo trailer and need them, but I have also acquired a light weight camper that weighs about 4,500 lbs and want a lighter set of trunion bars, maybe the 600 LB set. Is there a set of trunion bars I can buy with the 600 or 800 LB rating thats more suitable for the camper, and what would be the manufacturer and model nbr I would need?

The weight distribution head you have was made obsolete on 2/10/2011. I spoke with my contact at Reese/Draw-Tite and the current springs bars will not fit the head that you have. In order to use new bars you would have to replace the whole system and get new additional bars for different weight trailers.

The bars you have are probably rated for a range of 600 to 1200 pounds. Bars are rated for 200 to 600 pounds, 400 to 800 pounds, 600 to 1200 pounds, and 800 to 1500 pounds.

It would actually cost less to get a system just for the smaller 4500 pound trailer. That way you can keep your heavy system for the heavier trailer and equip the smaller trailer with its own system.

A trailer weighing 4500 pounds should have a tongue weight of 450 to 675 pounds which is 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. If your tongue weight ends up being between 550 and 750 pounds you can use # PS49582. And if the tongue weight ends up being up to 550 pounds you can use # PS49901.

Both systems include a 2-5/16 inch ball but if you need a 2 inch use # A-90.
