Video Transcript for What to Know About the 1-7/8" Hitch Ball

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Curt 1 7/8 inch diameter hitch ball with the 3/4 inch diameter shank, and a 2,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this hitch ball will provide the connection point for your 1 7/8 inch trailer's coupler, and will accept up to a 2,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. On the shank of the ball, has the fine threads on it that provide a nice tight, strong grip. And the dimensions on the shank, the length of it, it's gonna be right at 1 5/8 inches long, and the diameter on it is right at 3/4 of an inch. Now, this ball is constructed from a high strength hot forged steel, you can see it has a nice corrosion resistant chrome finish to it, and if you notice on the sides, the two flat ends here, these built-in wrench flats make it easy to hold the ball in place while you're tightening down the nut.

The nut itself as a zinc plated 1 1/8 inch size hex nut, and it comes with the lock washer for secure mounting to the ball mount. This is designed to fit ball mount platforms that are 3/8 inch to 5/8 inch thick, and when you install this, this shank will just drop through the hole in the platform. After it's through the platform, put your lock washer on there, put your nut on there, and then tighten it down to the correct specified torque. Again, the specs on this, the ball diameter is 1 7/8 inches, which is marked on the top, and the weight capacity is 2,000 pounds gross towing weight capacity, which is also marked on the top. But that should do it for the review on the Curt 1 7/8 inch diameter hitch ball with the 3/4 inch diameter shank, and the 2,000 pound gross towing weight capacity..

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2018 Hyundai Tucson Sel Plus
When we research towing capacities we base it off of what the owner's manual says but for some unknown reason there are no online manuals available for a 2018 Hyundai Tucson. I did take a look at the Hyundai website and as you said it listed the SEL Plus as having a 2,000 lb towing capacity as opposed to the 1,500 lb capacity of the SE and SEL; however, it looks like the SEL Plus only has some interior features differentiating it from the SE and SEL so it would not make sense for the capacity...

  • Towing Capacity of 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser
You are correct that passenger and cargo weight inside a vehicle does reduce the trailer weight it can tow. A vehicle like your PT that is intended primarily to transport people may not have much trailer towing capacity if you have a full load of passengers and cargo. I checked the online owner's manual for the 2005 PT Cruiser and the manual states (on page 242) the maximum trailer weight is 1000-lbs when the total weight of passengers, luggage and cargo is no more than 865-lbs. This is...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 with Center-Positioned Dual Exhaust
Yes, the Curt Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11103 is a confirmed fit on the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 with center-positioned dual exhaust. I confirmed compatibility with Curt's fit guide and also with one of their technicians. The written instructions and a helpful installation article are both linked to assist you. Tools required are listed in the instructions. If you plan to tow you will also need trailer wiring; use part # HM40975-11933 if you have the factory tow package or...

  • Best Ball Mount To Pair With The Curt Hitch C12107 On A 2017 Toyota Avalon Hybrid
Hi David! We haven't had the chance to install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class II - 1-1/4" # C12107 on a 2017 Toyota Avalon yet, but when we did it on a 2013, we got a hitch height of 11". This hitch also fits a 2017 Camry and that measured 11.5" when we installed it, so I would say you are looking at 11" to 11.5" on your 2017. I mention all this as the typical coupler height on a trailer will be roughly 18". Being +/- 2" will technically keep you level, so the Curt...

  • 2018 Hyundai Sonata Parts Needed to Tow a Trailer
The ball mount you get to pair with the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11402 on your 2018 Hyundai Sonata ultimately depends on the height of the trailer coupler that you're towing. A general rule of thumb is that smaller trailers will have a coupler height of about 14" - 16" and when we installed this hitch on a 2018 Sonata (see attached video) we found the hitch height to be 10-1/2" which means we need a minimum rise of 3-1/2" to be in that range. For your application I recommend checking...

  • Availability Of A 1-1/4" Draw Bar And 1-7/8" Ball With 0" Of Rise
Happy Monday to you as well! I do have a potential solution for you. We do not carry a draw bar with a true 0" rise, but what you can do is use the Curt Class 2 Drawbar # C45503. This has a 3/8" rise, and will be the closest thing we have to a 0" rise. You can use it with the 1-7/8" hitch ball # C40001. Keep in mind that with this setup, you are limited to towing 2,000 lbs or less.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2008 Honda Element SC
For your 2008 Honda Element SC I would recommend the Curt Hitch part # C11699 which is a confirmed fit and has a 1-1/4" inch opening. We do not currently (June 2023) have a 2" hitch for your element SC. For trailer wiring you would then want the part # 118465 which is also a confirmed fit. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in the Draw-Tite ball mount # 3593 which includes a pin and clip. Then for...

Yes, the Curt # C12169 will fit your 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid. However, I recommend getting the Class III # C13397 instead. In addition to the higher capacity, you will have more available options when it comes to accessories and ball mounts with the 2" receiver. The # C56370 will work as long as you have the AWD model. If you have the front wheel drive model you will need the # C59236 instead. Since it sounds like you will be towing you also need a ball mount. If you stick with the 1-1/4"...

  • Trailer Hitch to Fit 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8
Because of the center dual exhaust on the 2008 Grand Cherokee SRT-8, the only trailer hitch we offer is the Curt, part # C11103. This is a Class l hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. For a ball mount I recommend a mount like part # C45018. This is a Class l drawbar and it has a 5/8 inch rise or 1-1/4 inch drop. For a pin and clip you can use part # F-4. If you need a 2 inch hitch ball I recommend part # C40018 and for 1-7/8 I recommend part # C40001. For trailer wiring...

The Westin Fey Surestep Rear Bumper - Black Powder Coated Steel # 61001 is rated to haul up to 3,500 lbs and will need a hitch ball with a 3/4 inch shank. I recommend # 19258 for a 2 inch ball or # C40001 for a 1-7/8 inch ball. The bumper has integrated holes for the safety chains on either side of the hitch ball. These holes will allow for the S-hooks of your safety chains like # 2118-348-04 to connect quickly and easily but are not compatible with clevis hooks. I've attached an image...

We have everything that you need to get towing with your 2009 Buick LaCrosse. For a trailer hitch I recommend the 1-1/4" Class II Curt # C12239 because we have found the Curt trailer hitches typically have better welds and a thicker powder coat than other options. This contributes to a longer lifespan of the trailer hitch which in turn raises the quality of the hitch. Since you're needing to tow a smaller trailer you'll also need wiring to activate the trailer lights and for that I recommend...

You will want to ensure that you do not exceed the weight ratings given by the manufacturer for your vehicle. This will not require you to change your rear shocks.
