When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

I put this on an easy loader trailer that had an Atwood master cylinder which is now obsolete. Cutting the old actuator off was a real bitch. Installing the new Dexter actuator was very easy. I could bend the existing brake line 180 and hook it directly up without having to change the end. The bolts were easily available at the hardware store, I wish they would have came with it. The quality of the drop and go hitch is unbelievably easy to use.

The trailer is rarely used. but after a year, on braking, there was a banging noise from the hitch. It turns out this was from excessive travel on the brake shoes, because of improper adjustment after break-in. After proper brakeshoe adjustment the noise went away. All is working fine.

by:

Every time I use the brakes, the actuator slams loudly or "machine guns." I will not purchase a Dexter actuator again.

Honestly any drum brake actuator is not going to give a smooth braking experience. For smoother braking, changing over to a electric over hydraulic actuator and disc brakes would be the best option. It is going to be a more expensive option.

by:

Great product. Kicking my butt for being cheap and not doing the disk conversion though. Works good. No issues after a year

by:

Good replacement for Atwood. Haven't used it yet but I can say I have gone through 3 Atwood's. I can see why they went out of business

by:

The Drop and Go Brake Actuator was easy to install on my boat trailer and works great. Easy to follow instructions regarding the bleeding of the brakes. Noticeable difference over the old actuator which was on its last legs. After a year of use I am totally satisfied with its operation.

by:

Quality product

by:

The actuator was just what I needed. Now just have to bleed the brakes. The lock will prevent anyone from driving off with my boat or trailer.

by:

great hitch

by:

Very nice hitch. Really like the drop and go part and works smoothly. Also like the large cap for checking brake fluid level and looks like it will last a long time (with proper use). Not like other hitch types that the cap and threads strip out due to corrosion.

by:

Easy installation.
Proper braking.

by:

Fit perfect! Great replace the for Atwood discontinued surge brake drum coupler

by:

Impressive customer service rarely encountered anymore. Thanks

by:

  • 2005 Ranger Trail Boat Trailer Replacement Hydraulic Brake Coupler
Was there any manufacturer info on the existing coupler? Any part numbers? Unfortunately, there isn't an existing database that allows me to look up which hydraulic coupler was originally used on your 2005 Ranger Trail boat trailer. This being said, the Dexter Axle DX7.5 Drop-N-Go actuator would work well if you have a 3 inch wide pole tongue and need a coupler compatible with a 2 inch ball. For disc brakes, use the # 099-175-20, or # 099-175-00 for drum brakes.

  • Difference Between Hydraulic Brake Coupler with Lockout and Without Lockout
What a lockout on a hydraulic brake coupler does is prevent the brakes from applying when you back the trailer. An electric lock out is tied into the reverse lamp circuit on the vehicle so that when the vehicle is shifted into reverse the solenoid in the coupler is activated which prevents the trailer brakes from applying. If your boat trailer had free-backing brakes, you won't need a lockout because after being pushed a foot or so the brake assemblies disengage. For a 7500 lb hydraulic...

  • Disc Surge Brake Actuator for Eagle 25 Trailer
Since you said the trailer has a weight of around 4,000 lbs and has disc brakes the surge actuator you'd want is the Demco part # DM8605101 which is for disc brakes and has a 6,000 lb capacity plus has a reverse lock out to allow the trailer to back up without activating the brakes.

  • Replacement Actuator for Trailer with Model 70 Disc Brake Kit
For a disc brake model with an electric reverse lockout solenoid you can use # 099-175-20. This would be a great replacement solution for the model 70 you have on your trailer.

  • Recommended Surge Brake Actuator For 2006 Ranger Trail Trailer
I would be happy to make a recommendation for a replacement brake actuator for your 2006 Ranger Trailer Trailer, but I will need to know if your trailer has hydraulic disc or drum brakes. If your trailer has hydraulic disc brakes the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Disc Brakes - 2" Ball - Zinc Plated - 7,500 lbs # 099-175-20 is a great choice that has is zinc plated for superior corrosion resistance, and will bolt on to trailer tongues that are 3" wide. • Replacement For TDE-LP750 Trailer Actuator
We can get you a good replacement, though there is actually no longer a TDE brand. But that actuator is simply a bolt-on, 7,500 lb actuator that couples to a 2" hitch ball, and per the owner's manual does not have a lockout (so it is for free-backing brakes). The replacement you can use is from Dexter, and the right one will depend on if you have drum brakes or disc brakes: - Drum: Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 - Disc: Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-20

  • Recommended Trailer Coupler With Breakaway Kit Replacement
I spoke with my contact at Fulton and they told me that the A50 coupler was for a surge brake 5,000 lb system and is no longer available. They said the parts for that are no longer available either. The coupler you will need depends on the kind of brakes you have on your trailer, either disc or drum. If you install a disc brake coupler on a trailer with drum brakes, you run the risk of having the brakes locking up. If you have disc brakes I recommend part # 099-175-20. This coupler...

  • Recommended Replacement for Model 70LP Surge Brake Actuator
While we don't have replacement parts for a Model 70LP actuator, we do have a great replacement for it. Like the 70LP, these actuators are a fit for a 2" hitch ball, but they just have a slightly larger capacity at 7,500 lbs. You didn't mention whether you had drum or disc brakes so I'll give the options for both: - Drum Brakes: Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Drum Brakes # 099-175-00 - Disc Brakes: Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Disc Brakes # 099-175-20 I've added links...

  • Replacement Solution for Atwood 82542 Actuator on Boat Trailer
Atwood stopped making actuators a while back which is why you aren't able to find a replacement or any replacement parts. So for a solution to replace what you have the Dexter DX7.5 part # 099-175-00 would be a great solution if you have drum brakes or the part # 099-175-20 for disc brakes. I really like how easy the coupler of these actuators work as basically you can just drop them onto the ball and they latch themselves.

  • Converting Trailer with Adjustable Ball Titan Model 60 Actuator to Alternative Style
Since there isn't a way to convert your adjustable ball style of Titan Model 60 actuator to a leverlock style you'll need to remove the entire coupler and install the Dexter Drop-N-Go part # 099-175-20 if you have disc brakes or part # 099-175-00 if you have drum instead. This is the upgraded replacement for the Titan Leverlock. Dexter bought Titan and this is the new style I think you'll really like.

It sounds like the fact your brakes are locking and releasing is what will cause the bounce and porpoising you are describing.
