When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

This is a nice easy to use hitch. This is the 3rd one purchased for boat trailer hitch replacement. Really like the drop and go feature.

by:

I put this on an easy loader trailer that had an Atwood master cylinder which is now obsolete. Cutting the old actuator off was a real bitch. Installing the new Dexter actuator was very easy. I could bend the existing brake line 180 and hook it directly up without having to change the end. The bolts were easily available at the hardware store, I wish they would have came with it. The quality of the drop and go hitch is unbelievably easy to use.

The trailer is rarely used. but after a year, on braking, there was a banging noise from the hitch. It turns out this was from excessive travel on the brake shoes, because of improper adjustment after break-in. After proper brakeshoe adjustment the noise went away. All is working fine.

by:

Had to move holes for safety chains other than that fit perfect

by:

Every time I use the brakes, the actuator slams loudly or "machine guns." I will not purchase a Dexter actuator again.

Honestly any drum brake actuator is not going to give a smooth braking experience. For smoother braking, changing over to a electric over hydraulic actuator and disc brakes would be the best option. It is going to be a more expensive option.

by:

Works great!

by:

It fit perfectly and was easy to install. Customer service was excellent.

by:

Good replacement for Atwood. Haven't used it yet but I can say I have gone through 3 Atwood's. I can see why they went out of business

by:

The Drop and Go Brake Actuator was easy to install on my boat trailer and works great. Easy to follow instructions regarding the bleeding of the brakes. Noticeable difference over the old actuator which was on its last legs. After a year of use I am totally satisfied with its operation.

by:

It's well made

by:

Very nice hitch. Really like the drop and go part and works smoothly. Also like the large cap for checking brake fluid level and looks like it will last a long time (with proper use). Not like other hitch types that the cap and threads strip out due to corrosion.

by:

Great product. Kicking my butt for being cheap and not doing the disk conversion though. Works good. No issues after a year

by:

The actuator was just what I needed. Now just have to bleed the brakes. The lock will prevent anyone from driving off with my boat or trailer.

by:

Fit perfect! Great replace the for Atwood discontinued surge brake drum coupler

by:

Easy installation.
Proper braking.

  • Replacement Hydraulic Drum Brakes, Hub/Drum, and A-60 Actuator for 3,500 lb Axles on Boat Trailer
We have exactly what you're needing! For replacing your hub/drum assemblies you need the kit # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K (2 per axle) and then for the brakes you need the kit # AKFBBRK-35-D (1 per axle). The actuator is a little different simply because there are multiple styles for installing the actuator on your trailer coupler so you'll want to look through these options to see which A-60 best matches your current A-60 actuator: - Top Mount 3-Bolt # 099-175-00 - Top Mount 3-Bolt # DX33FR ...

You can not, jonathon. The Dexter DX7.5L A-60XL Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout # DX43FR is designed to be used only with hydraulic disc brakes, so for drum brakes you'd need to use the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00. This actuator has the same 7.5K weight capacity, will work with 2" hitch balls, and is made in the USA.

  • Recommendation to Replace Atwood 83010 Brake Actuator
Your existing Atwood model 83010 Brake Actuator (which as you mentioned is no longer available) is an 8,000 pound rated assembly for hydraulic drum brakes that's compatible with a 2" ball. It's designed to fit 3" wide straight trailer tongues. In terms of specs the closest option we have available for replacement is the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8669112. • Trailer Hopping With Empty Trailer After Installing Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Actuator 099-175-00
Correct; since the trailer is currently empty, there is going to be some hopping of the wheels, and it would not have to do with the install of the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Drum Brakes - 2" Ball - Zinc Plated - 7,500 lbs # 099-175-00. Once you have a loaded trailer, the weight on the trailer will stop or greatly minimize any of the hopping you are experiencing.

  • Galvanized Surge Brake Actuator and Brake Assembly for a 3,500 lb Axle
The Dexter Zinc-Plated Brake Actuator part # 099-175-00 would be an excellent surge actuator. This has a 7,500 lb capacity. This model does not have a lockout feature, but one could easily be added with the part # T4748800 so that your trailer could be backed-up without the brakes activating. For 10 inch brake assemblies the part # DMSB18794M would be great for the left hand side of your trailer, for the right hand side you would want the part # DMSB18793M. • Replacement Solution for Atwood 82542 Actuator on Boat Trailer
Atwood stopped making actuators a while back which is why you aren't able to find a replacement or any replacement parts. So for a solution to replace what you have the Dexter DX7.5 part # 099-175-00 would be a great solution if you have drum brakes or the part # 099-175-20 for disc brakes. I really like how easy the coupler of these actuators work as basically you can just drop them onto the ball and they latch themselves.

  • Comparing Demco and Dexter DX7.5 Hydraulic Drum Brake Actuators
The Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM72VR and Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 are made by two different manufacturers and the only differences are the weight capacities, the bolt patterns, and the exact style of the coupler latch - both latches have an automatic latch mechanism though so even though they don't look the same, they still act in the same way. • What Is The Difference Between A Disc Brake and Drum Brake Surge Brake Actuator?
The difference between the Demco # DM62VR for disc brakes and the Demco # DM72VR for drum brakes is the pressure each one operates at so that why they cannot be interchanged. Disc brakes require 1600 PSI where drums like what your trailer has require around 1000 PSI. For a surge brake actuator compatible with drum brakes and a reverse lockout solenoid I recommend going with the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Drum Brakes - 2" Ball - Zinc Plated - 7,500 lbs # 099-175-00 which can...

Hey Richard, thanks for reaching out! The Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 is a great option for a replacement actuator because it's a direct replacement for the common Model 60 actuators that were popular in the '90s. I'm not exactly sure what model actuator your trailer came with but This one has the bolt holes measuring 3" apart on center and it fits a 3" wide channel tongue so if those specs match what you have then this will fit like a glove!

  • Difference Between Model 60 Surge Trailer Brake Actuators that Fit Disc and Drum Brakes

For a version of this coupler that is designed for drum brakes you'd want the part # T43329007K. Or you can change out the master cylinders to fit the application. • Replacement For TDE-LP750 Trailer Actuator

The replacement you can use is from Dexter, and the right one will depend on if you have drum brakes or disc brakes: - Drum: Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 - Disc: Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-20

  • Difference Between Hydraulic Brake Coupler with Lockout and Without Lockout
What a lockout on a hydraulic brake coupler does is prevent the brakes from applying when you back the trailer. An electric lock out is tied into the reverse lamp circuit on the vehicle so that when the vehicle is shifted into reverse the solenoid in the coupler is activated which prevents the trailer brakes from applying. If your boat trailer had free-backing brakes, you won't need a lockout because after being pushed a foot or so the brake assemblies disengage. For a 7500 lb hydraulic...

The best solution we have is going to be a new surge coupler like the # 099-175-00. Plus you have to consider it's hard to know what all would need to be replaced so replacing the entire coupler gives you all new parts and frees you from having to worry about the next old part on the coupler that may wear out.
