Updated 08/13/2024 | Published 08/09/2024

Question:

I have a big tex 1987 12k lb trailer and I was wanting to find a brake system for it. Possibly one of these bolt on disk brake kits but idk if itll fit. I know its a dual axle 8 lug with single wheels and tires. The vin on the trailer is 16VCB1624J1315681

Andrew, if that's the case then you can use the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2R1258L12 to add brakes to your Big Tex trailer. This kit comes with everything needed to add brakes, will work with 12K axles, and has a 8 on 6 1/2 bolt pattern. ]

The last thing you'd need is the Hydrastar Electric-Hydraulic Actuator w/ Line Kit for Disc Brakes # CAR-HBA16-2 which includes the actuator and brake lines to actually active the brakes.

Would I need this kit? Wouldn't my axles be 6k axles if I have 2 axles and the trailer is rated for 12k?

@Andrew Sorry about that, I must've missed the dual axle note in there. In this case you'd want to use the Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit w/ Actuator for Tandem Axle Trailers # HSE7K-T1 instead. These are for 7k axles but they'll work just the same with 6k axles, and include the brake lines as well as the actuator.
