Updated 09/12/2025 | Published 08/23/2025

Question:

I need to replace my Attwood 85778 actuator because the shock absorber is shot, just wondering what you would recommend, I have drum brakes on my trailer. Thanks in advance.

Hi Greg!

I have found the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator - Drum - Zinc - 2" Ball - 7,000 lbs # DM72VR to be a good replacement for the Atwood 85778 actuators. We get asked about them every now and then and this one works very well. It also has the easiest to use coupler out there.

One thing to note though, this does not include a reverse lock out. I would also grab the Reverse Lockout Solenoid Kit for Demco DA66B and DA70 Hydraulic Brake Actuators - Non-Bypass # DM5836 so you can reverse without the brakes engaging. Unless you already have free-backing brakes installed, of course.

What kind of trailer is this installed on?

Hi Greg, Did the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator and Reverse Lockout Solenoid Kit work out for your trailer? I'm curious to know if it solved your issue, as it could help others with similar setups.
