RV Steps for confident, steady entry
Measure first to match your RV steps to your door frame width and entry height; entry height is from the top of the doorway threshold to the ground. An 8 inch or 9 inch rise refers to the distance between steps, so pick what feels right for your stride. Installs can be simple, and when space is tight, removing a decorative roll plate or carefully trimming a threshold lip or a bit of the screen door can create the clearance needed for the door to close.
Sometimes, yes. Lift-assist strut compatibility depends on the exact step model and whether it's for a narrow or wide door frame. Confirm your step's model number before ordering a strut so the attachment points and travel match. If you're unsure which version you have, check the label on the step or your original paperwork.
Match the step to your door frame width and your entry height. Measure the inside of the door frame so the step brackets can catch the frame lip; too narrow won't engage even with adjustment. For interior fold-down styles, also check step rise/drop options to get comfortable spacing between treads. Verify screen door clearance before drilling.
Installation can be straightforward with basic drilling. Have a helper hold the assembly while you fasten and adjust. On some older trailers, minor trimming of the aluminum foundation or notching the bottom of the door frame may be needed for screen door clearance. Test-fit, mark carefully, then trim only what's necessary.
They can feel very stable when set up correctly. Fully spread the legs and seat them firmly to reduce rocking. On 57 limestone gravel, a ground step did not move and felt solid. For visibility, adding bright strips can help you see the edge in low light. Recheck leg locks after moving the step.
Start by leaving off the decorative roll plate against the threshold to lower the step bracket. If needed, trim just the threshold lip to the width of the step brackets. If the screen door still hits, mark the cut using tape at each bracket edge, close the screen door, mark the bottom, and remove a section about a half inch high between the marks. Trim a bit more only if required.
