Video Transcript for Thule DockGrip Kayak and SUP Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Thule DockGrip kayak and stand up paddle board carrier with tie downs, part number TH895. The Thule dock grip is a saddle style carrier that can carry up to one kayak or one stand up paddle board on your factory or Thule roof rack systems. The saddles are adjustable and padded to provide protection and stability while you travel as well. It does come with all the necessary tie downs to secure your kayak to your roof. These are great for river, sea, recreational and fishing kayaks and the saddles themselves are adjustable to conform to the hull of your kayak as well, with these adjustment levers on the side. You push those in and as you can see, it adjusts to a different setting. The tie down straps do have these rubber protectors here and that's going to make sure the hull of your kayak won't get damaged once it's being installed or tightened down.

And the bound stern tie downs do ratchet down into place, which makes tightening those down much easier. We've gone ahead and taken the kayak off to show you the saddles themselves and how easy they are to install. With the kayak off you can see the adjustability that we have with the saddles and the different positions that they can be in, to fully flat for your stand up paddle boards. Now this also can adjust to other style roof racks, right now we have it on the arrow but this can also work with round, square, elliptical and most factory roof racks as well. Right now this is the set up that you would have for the arrow bars as you see here.

Now if we wanted to set it for say, smaller bars, this comes around and flips to fit around those. This is more so for your factory style roof racks. The DockGrip has a 75 pound carrying capacity and has to have at least a minimum of 24 inches of cross bar width between them, and has a limited lifetime warranty. When comparing this to other kayak carriers, one that comes up is going to be the Rhino Rack Nautic Roof kayak Carrier with tie downs, part number RR570. The biggest difference between these two being is that the Thule is designed to work both with kayaks and with stand up paddle boards, while the Rhino Rack Nautic Roof kayak carrier is for kayaks only. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the DockGrip, let's go ahead and show you how it installs on your vehicle. First we have to do a little bit of assembly for our saddles.

So we'll set these out of the way, we'll flip this up on its end and pull this rubber cap off the bottom, and take this plastic piece, line it up and in this hole, we'll install the circular screw and tighten that down with the included alan key. In this hole we'll take the square bolt, push that through and we'll take the turn knob here and tighten that down as well. Then finally we'll install our universal mount on the bottom of our saddle. We'll just loosen up one of the turn knobs all the way, doesn't matter which one. We'll take that end, place it in.

You'll see that there's a slotted end and an enclosed end, take this and put it through the enclosed end and loosely install our turn knob back into place. Now we're ready to install these on our roof rack. Set it on our bar, close it up on the other side and just start to tighten it down. Now we're going to repeat this for our other saddles. Now we can start to load this from the rear. We'll bring it up to our first set of saddles, set it down and then push it the rest of the way, bringing it forward as we do so. Also as we do this we're going to try to keep it centered as best we can. Now that we have everything in place, you'll notice that it's not necessarily conforming right here. Well we have an adjustment lever, or button, on the side here. We'll push that in and up until it clicks. Now it better conforms to the hull of the kayak. We'll do this on the other side as well. Now with everything loaded up, we can start installing our straps. We'll take the one end, toss it over our kayak, leaving the end with the rubber protector hanging like so. Now we'll go to the other side. We'll take this end, we'll wrap it underneath our crossbar here, then we'll take the rest of our excess and throw it back over to the other side. Back on the passenger side, we'll again wrap it underneath the crossbar here, then we'll hook it up to our cam buckle, placing our protective coating over here so we don't scratch up the hull. Pull it nice and tight and then we'll repeat this process for the front saddles as well. Now we'll tie off the excess and get ready to install our bound stern tie downs. Next, we'll get our tie down ready, we'll first attach our hook, put the one end through and as we do that we'll make a loop on the other side and we'll bring it around, bring it tight and we'll repeat this for the other hook as well. Next we'll take the end that's going to attach to our kayak mount, we'll push our tie down point in through there while pushing in on this button on the inside that'll make it free spin. We'll continue to push it around until it comes back out the side. Once our tie downs are ready we can move to our kayak and make our connections up there as well. Next, we'll install our loop, our kayak carrier point of the front. Just wrap it through like that, pull it tight. We'll do this for the rear as well. Next we'll take our tie downs with the hook and attach it underneath the vehicle to the tow hook portion at the front. Once we attach it, we'll bring it up keeping it taut as we do so. We'll take our one end with the snap pin here, attach that, ratcheting it tight. Remember to keep this taut so the hook stays in place at the bottom. Now we'll pull this tight as we can, there we go. Now we'll repeat this of the rear. Attach it pretty much the same way except we'll just start from the top this time, start tying it town, then we can hook it to our hitch while we pull it tight and then finish up. Now we can tie off the excess in the rear in the front, and there you have it for the Thule DockGrip, kayak and stand Up paddle board carrier, part number TH895.

  • Comparing Thule DockGlide Kayak Carrier to the Thule DockGrip Saddle Style Kayak and SUP Carrier
For your Thule truck rack aero bars, the Thule DockGlide # TH896 is better if you want to slide your kayak from the back and utilizes felt pads to protect your boat and ease loading. I've attached a video to assist. The contrast is the Thule DockGrip # TH895 which has rear feet that grip. This is helpful for Stand Up Paddleboard use as well. I've attached that video for you to see the contrast. I recommend the Thule DockGlide for Kayak applications as the preferred easier product.

  • Recommended Kayak Carrier for Two Kayaks with Combined Width of 46" on 47" Crossbars
I do have a great option for you, however if the combined width of both your kayaks is 46 inches you won't be able to secure them using two of the Thule DockGrip Kayak Carriers # TH895 on your WingBar Load Bars. This is because there will need to be a small gap between the two carriers due to the cradle design which would push one of the cradle sets beyond the 47" length of your crossbars. For this application I instead recommend using a couple J-style carriers like the excellent etrailer.com...

This carrier is also able to install in the T-track on top of the rack if desired for a very clean look and greater security. • Roof Top Kayak Carrier Solution that Has Felt Pads on Rear Assemblies
We don't have a solution for attaching felt to the Thule DockGrip part # TH895 that you mentioned but we do have similar carriers that have felt on the pads like the # RR571 from Rhino Rack that is designed to clamp around crossbars or the part # RR581 which is designed to fit into a crossbar's top channel if present. The rear pads of these carriers are felt to help make sliding the boats on easier and the front pads are rubber to help keep the kayaks in place. I attached a review video...

The Thule DockGrip kayak carrier, part # TH895, fits on most factory crossbars as well as round, square, and aero bars. I've linked a demo video of the carrier on Thule AeroBlade bars for you. Let me know the year, make, and model of your vehicle, and what kind of crossbars you have, if any, and I'll confirm whether not the DockGrip will work for you.

  • Converting Thule DockGrip Kayak Carrier to DockGlide
I spoke with my contact at Thule and she said that you can indeed just replace the rear cradles on your DockGrip Kayak Carrier # TH895 with the DockGlide Assemblies # 1500052829 from the DockGlide Kayak Carrier to essentially convert it to this model. The mounting hardware is the same between the two systems so you just need the cradles themselves. They are sold as a quantity of 1 so you will need to order 2 of the assemblies.

  • Locking Thule DockGrip Kayak and SUP Carrier to Roof Rack Crossbars
The Thule DockGrip Kayak and SUP Carrier # TH895 won't work with the One-Key Lock Cylinders # TH450400 as there simply isn't a place for these to install. The cradles themselves aren't able to be locked to the crossbars unless you are mounting them to a T-track on the crossbars, in which case locking end caps on the crossbars would help protect them from theft. Another option would be to just use a cable lock like # e98891 to weave through the cradles and around the crossbars to secure...

  • Should Cover of Paddleboard be Removed When Transporting on Roof Rack
Yes, you'd need to remove all covers when transporting a kayak or SUP with the Thule DockGrip Kayak # TH895. The wind would whip the cover quite a bit while travelling which might damage the board.

The DockGrip also has an 85 lb capacity which is enough to secure your 75 lb fishing kayak. The DockGrip comes with tie-downs as well, saving you from any extra expense. I have added a link to a video review of the DockGrip for you to take a look at.
