Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Positive Caster Makes for a Smoother Towing and Installation Experience

Blue Ox TrackPro Positive Caster

When you turn a corner in a car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically corrects itself and returns to center. The same technology used to keep your vehicle centered on the road is what the TrackPro uses to prevent trailer sway before it even starts, no matter if it's caused by high winds or sharp turns. Pointing toward the rear of your trailer, there's a positive caster angle built into the hitch. It works in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force that keeps your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle.

This positive caster creates another benefit - an easier installation. Since the required pitch is alredy pre-set, there's no need to fine-tune it using hard-to-access washers or a difficult-to-use thumbscrew. The only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height.

Steel-on-Steel Friction Corrects Sway

Blue Ox TrackPro Steel-on-Steel Friction

If you need an option built with American-made steel that will hold your trailer in line while providing sway control, the Blue Ox TrackPro might be just what you're after. In addition to the pre-set pitch described earlier, the TrackPro creates a rigid system that holds your trailer in line behind your vehicle, helping keep your trailer from getting off track. And it uses friction to force your trailer back in line if a strong crosswind or passing truck is a bit too much for the rigid hold to handle on its own.

A close-up image shows where the spring bar grinds on the steel bracket

Because the steel-on-steel friction of the bars and L-brackets is noisy, don't be alarmed if you hear some banging, creaking, and grinding. It's just the system working to correct sway.

Fun Fact: Steel-on-steel friction is what locomotives use to keep multi-ton railcars from swaying.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for 2022 Keystone Springdale Mini 1750RD
Hey Michelle! There are definitely a lot of different weight distribution hitch (WDH) options out there. The most important thing is to make sure it is properly rated for the tongue weight of your setup. Looking at the specs for the 2022 Keystone Springdale Mini 1750RD it has a dry (unloaded) tongue weight of 520 lbs and a GVWR of 4,400 lbs. Tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight so at the high end, fully loaded, you're going to be around 660 lbs. For occasional,...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a Trailer w/ a 645 lbs Tongue Weight
Hey Tom congrats on the new trailer! You could use a tongue weight scale like item # e99044 to get an exact number. However, what we typically do is get your trailer's total loaded down weight and multiple that by 10% - 15% and whatever those numbers are we find a weight distribution system within that range. The Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control item # BLU47FR, you referenced has a tongue weight range of 600 lbs - 800 lbs. What kind of trailer do you have? I can look...

  • Correct Blue Ox TrackPro for 2017 Airstream with 6,000 lb GVWR
Hey John, thanks for reaching out! If the 470 lbs of tongue weight you're talking about is with the 2017 Airstream fully loaded for travel then the 6K Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU36FR is a great solution for you as long as your tongue weight is 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight. Otherwise I recommend the 8K Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU47FR because it gives you the ability to load your Airstream to the full GVWR and still be effective.

  • 2020 Ford F-150 4x4 Timbren Kit Recommendation for Towing a 7K Trailer
Hey Patrick, thanks for reaching out! I recommend using the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TFR1504E for trailer towing with your 2020 Ford F-150 because this is rated to help out with 6,000 lbs, but it won't be feeling the full weight of your 7K trailer. Timbren's have a reputation for making the unloaded ride of a truck a bit more stiff which is why I recommend the lightest weight rating. The other thing to keep in mind is that a properly rated weight distribution system...

  • Is a 2021 Kia Telluride Rated for Use with a Weight Distribution Hitch?
Hey Daniel, thanks for reaching out! The best places to find that information are either in your manual or with your local Kia dealer. I tried checking in the online owner's manual for your Telluride, but it didn't say anything about a weight distribution system so it would be good to verify that with your local dealer. If they're okay with you using a weight distribution system (WDS) then something like the Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU47FR would be a great option, but I'll need to know the...

Hello Emmanuel, thanks for reaching out. What I recommend for you is the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BLU47FR. This is made for trailers with a tongue weight between 600 and 800 lbs. Your Forest River 26CJ is going to be right within that range to where you will see good ride leveling and effective sway control. The Blue Ox systems are also fairly easy to set up. This system has built in sway control that will help with the stability. It works with tongue weights between 600 lbs - 800 lbs so you'll also be able to use it on your 16 ft Kaufmann car hauler. Hey Charles, so with air suspension that doesn't auto level there's really nothing special you need to do when setting up your WD system and you can just go about it like normal. If you do have an auto leveling setup what you need to do is put the tongue weight on the ball mount and let the suspension work to level itself and then after that set the spring bar tension and you'll be good. To confirm which weight distribution hitch will work to tow your trailer with a GVWR of 4995lbs you will need to measure its tongue weight, as the tongue weight rating is usually with the trailer unloaded and will not be accurate. The easiest way to get an accurate tongue weight measurement is with a tongue weight scale like the # e99044, but there are other methods that are outlined in the included help article. • Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation for a 2025 Ford Ranger Towing a Jay Feather Micro 199mbs
Hey Ezra, I can definitely help you with this decision. First let me say, those are all great choices. The main reason I suggest going with the TrackPro # BLU47FR is how it handles sway. A system like the TrackPro uses a spring bar design to flex more naturally instead of acting like a stiff lever. That lets it absorb bumps better and keeps the trailer more stable. It also uses those bars to constantly balance the load side-to-side, so it’s helping prevent sway instead of just reacting...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a Lance 1575 Travel Trailer
Hey Martha! The 8K Blue Ox TrackPro item # BLU47FR is going to be quite a bit overrated for your Lance 1575 travel trailer. I recommend going down in capacity and using the 6K Blue Ox TrackPro item # BLU36FR instead. This system works best with trailer's that have tongue weights between 200 lbs - 600 lbs, which is exactly where your Lance trailer is going to be.
