Weight Distribution Hitch Recommendation For a 2002 Thor Tahoe Toy Hauler

Published 04/16/2024

Question:

Hello! I have a 2015 Chevrolet Suburban LT, and a 2002 Tahoe by Thor toy hauler. I am looking to purchase a weight distribution hitch, because the tongue weight of the toy hauler creates substantial sag on the Suburbans rear end. I see there are many, many options available online, and I want to see if there is a customer service/sales rep who can help me the right hitch to successfully tow this trailer.

Hello Laura, you came to the right place, and I can definitely point you in the right direction. When selecting a weight distribution hitch, the main factor to consider is the loaded tongue weight of the trailer. Each weight distribution hitch will have specified tongue weight range, and we want to be sure your trailer will be within that range. That way you will get good effective weight distribution and sway control.

Can you tell me the sub model of your 2002 Thor Tahoe? That or tell me the GVWR or tongue weight of the trailer. This way I can be sure you are getting an appropriately rated system.

I generally recommend the Blue Ox brand weight distribution systems since they are durable, user friendly, and made right here in the USA. For example the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution # BLU47FR is a great option that will work on trailers with a tongue weight between 600 and 800 lbs.

Feel free to post the GVWR and sub model of your camper in the comments below and I am happy to make a more accurate recommendation for you.

Thanks, Jesse! This travel toy hauler is a little mysterious. Here's what I know: Tahoe by Thor Transport 28TB, is what it reads on the side of the trailer. The exact tongue weight is unknown, but here is what is etched on the tongue itself. Perhaps you can help me decode it. "Atwood Mobile Products Rockford, IL 61103 USA P/N MPD 81911 Do not exceed 10,000 lbs gross weight 1500lbs tongue load SAE/CSA class 4 Or for mobile home use 25,000 gross weight 6250 lbs tongue load 2-5/16 dia ball Warning Do not exceed 5000 lbs load On Jack if fastened to coupler Retract Jack fully before towing USA Pat 3830580" What do you think of this information?

@Laura Thanks for all that info. The 2015 Chevy Suburban is rated for towing up to 8,300 lbs. you are likely pushing this vehicle to its weight limit which is why it is sagging so bad. a WD hitch will definitely help. It sounds like this trailer has a GVWR of 10,000 lbs and a max tongue weight rating of 1,500 lbs. Although this is just telling us a max weight, and not the actual weight of the trailer. If this is all we have, it is possible to select a weight distribution hitch using just this info. I will say that it is preferred to know the exact tongue weight. You can either use a tongue weight scale like part # e99044, or you can take the loaded trailer to a scale. Like I said, I can still make a recommendation based on the info you provided. I suggest you take a look at the Blue Ox SwayPro # BXW1500. This is made for trailers with a tongue weight between 1,000 and 1,500 lbs, so it will work very well for you.
