An example of sag on a truck's rear axle under a heavy load. The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System levels the vehicle.

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in the cargo area or by pulling a trailer, you will often see the rear sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but more of the truck's weight, as well. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system has a custom-fit bracket that will be bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, one inch above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping the truck level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to the truck. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Compared to the Competition

Timbren's suspension enhancement systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Front and Rear Suspension Enhancement Systems Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Timbren line of suspension enhancement systems. Any time that we add weight to our vehicle, it's going to put a lot of strain and stress on the suspension, especially if we're towing a heavy camper, trailer, or we have a heavy load in the back.Tends to have the back end squat down, which again, it's going to put that strain and stress on the rear suspension because not only are we asking it to hold up the weight of the vehicle, but everything else that we add on to it. Which that can arise a lot of different issues. The front end is going to be getting pulled off, which will misalign our headlights, and our tires won't have as much contact, so our steering and braking is going to be diminished. But tat;s where timbrens are going to come into play. They're going to provide us that extra support so that when we do have those heavy loads, the back end doesn't sag down quite as much, and it's not putting so much stress on the back end. By doing that, the front end's not going to rise up, which means our headlights will be in line and our tires will have the correct amount of contact and pressure, so our braking and steering isn't affected.

And they're going to do that all while making our ride more comfortable with that extra load. Our timbrens are going to provide us the support we need by replacing our factory jump stops and mounting in between the frame and the axle. Now, yours may look different, so you want to double check inaudible 00:01:20 fit guide for your specific application. Now, each one of our timbrens is going to feature a steel bracket. They're all going to have black, powder coat finish on them to resist that rust and corrosion or any other kind of chemicals that may be on the road. They're going to have a hollow, rubber ayon 00:01:36 spring that's going to take a lot of that pressure and strain off of the rear suspension.Whenever we do load our vehicle down, the space between our frame and our axle is going to get smaller. That's where our spring is going to make contact with the axle, and it's going to start compressing.

Now, they are progressively rated, so if we have a small load or a light load, it's going to have a little soft engagement. But the further it gets compressed, the harder and stiffer it becomes, giving us the support we need with those heavy loads. And since they are rubber, they're going to have a lot of give to them, which means they're going to give us the support we need. But at the same time, they're going to give us some more cushion and absorb some of the road shock as we drive. And since the rear ones here aren't in constant contact with our aXle, it is going to provide us the same ride quality when it's unloaded. Our timbrens are going to work independently from each other from side to side. That way, if we have an off center load, it will help compensate for that, but at the same time, if we take an evasive maneuver or a really sharp turn, this is going to help reduce that body roll and some of that sway feeling that we get going on when we have a lot of added weight. Our timbrens for the rear are going to be a good enhancement for any time you're going to be adding weight to the back of your vehicle, whether it be a heavy trailer, a large load in the back or any other situation where you're adding a lot of weight to the back of your vehicle. Now, timbrens on the front are going to be a little bit different.

They're going to provide us that load-leveling support and make sure the front end doesn't get pushed down too far. However, these typically are going to be in contact all the time, which means it's going to give us that support and help reduce on that body roll all the time, all while absorbing that road shock, giving us a smoother ride. Now, some situations where you'd want that extra support on the front of the vehicle to keep it from getting pushed down too much would be if you have a snow plow or winch, if you flat-tow your vehicle, or if you have any other heavy accessory on the front. This is going to make sure that front end stays where it should be, and again, making sure our tires, braking and steering acts how they should. When comparing the timbrens to other suspension enhancement options like airbags, these are going to be a lot easier to install because we're not going to have to worry about running lines, maintaining air pressure, putting in switches or compressors or any of that. Once these are installed, these are going to be completely maintenance free. However, airbags are going to provide us with a lot more adjustability, whereas our timbrens are not going to have that. That'll finish up your look at the timbrens suspension enhancement systems..

I've had the Timbrens installed for about a year now and can report that they have done exactly what I wanted from them. The install was pretty easy (did it in the driveway using my creeper). My F350 was squatting a bit from the 3000# pin weight and I wanted to reduce that. Unloaded I can't tell they are there unless I hit a pretty big bump and when we're hitched they eliminate most of the squat and the truck is now pretty level when towing. I was thinking about installing air bags but went this route since it was simple and cost less. It's a great product! I've read some complaints about a rough ride when unloaded and I think that's due to not getting the unloaded gap right during installation. Submitting an "Installed" pic. 639141

My 2015 F-350 dually would always squat when I’d hook up my fifth wheel. Towed it for the first time since purchase and install and the truck is nice and level. The ride is better also and after driving a bit without the camper I don’t really notice them. I love the simplicity of these over airbags and imagine they won’t be needing any maintenance or replacement anytime soon. Great simple solution. Not so easy for an old fat guy to install laying under the truck in the driveway but I managed! 442491

They work. It is nice towing nice and level now. The ride with the load on is good and smooth and very stable. I am still very happy I went them. Put them on and forget about them, no maintenance and no worries.

I placed these on my 2012 F-350 SRW as an alternative to putting air bags on due to the price difference. The timbrens have worked well when pulling but has taken the rough ride of a one ton truck and made it worse under normal driving conditions. These don't allow for much travel of the suspension when going down the road and hitting normal bumps. If you're considering these or airbags spend the extra money on airbags and be done once and for all. 401122

No complaints with Etrailer customer service and delivery time. I thought I would need the spacer, and while putting everything together to check the fit, the bolts were not long enough. I drove to hardware stores for longer bolts. Well I did not need the spacer, and wasted some time. The stock stops were a bitch to take off. The only method that worked was tie wrapping pliers to the stops to grip in order to turn the bolts. The Timbren stops went on very easy. I hooked up my trailer for a drive. The truck does not sag and does not bump up and down as before. I drive a 2013 Ford F-350 single axle. I took my wife for a ride with out the trailer and she feel the stiffness of the Timbren, but nothing uncomfortable. 528768

Great product and installs easily. I did not use the spacer, so this allows the stock suspension about 1-1/2" of travel before contacting the Timbren units. I tow a 16K fifth wheel and the Timbren's handle this load very well. You can see the compression marking on the lower side of the Timbren when the trailer is hooked up to the truck. Just enough contact to keep the truck at a level stance. My stock "bump stops" were starting to fall apart from age and wear/tear. These Timbrens now add an extra level of suspension that makes the truck feel much more in control when pulling the fifth wheel. 574936

The Timbrens are great. I have not had the truck with a full load yet but I anticipate they will help bring the truck back to level. The install went well but we were not able to use the additional spacer even with the longer bolts. We were not able to put enough pressure on the bolt to get the nut started. I don’t believe I will need the spacers so it should be ok. The directions didn’t include the amount of torque that was needed so I sent e-trailer an email. They checked with Timbren and the torque is 1/4 turn after they are tight. Ive attached some pictures of the completed install. 566262

I drive a F350 Super Duty, 2016, Crew cab, short bed. I pull a 38 FT, 16,500 GVWR goose neck 3 horse with living quarters. I was going to put in air bags as I was sick of slamming into my bump stops and my headlights aiming to the sky; oddly the trailer towed great except for those two items. I had thought about the Timbren's but was hesitant. After my trailer guys at Triple C in Watervliet, MI; great guys, told me they had stopped putting in air bags, but now suggested the Timbren enhancement system, I thought I would try it. GREAT PRODUCT; cheaper than airbags, easier to install, no maintenance and works great. I put them and immediately drove the horses from Chicago to West Palm with no problems. Truck is almost perfectly level now. I did not have one of the shuddering slamming events I typically get 3 of in Indiana alone. I would strongly recommend. Also; he service was great. The online ordering would have gotten it to me late, but I called and LaceyG was a huge help in getting it with that days shipments. She was also a big help on finalizing my decision. 591937

Installation was a breeze on my 2016 F-350 sbcc 4x4 thanks to the provided videos (didn't even need to jack up the truck). It has performed as advertised towing a 16,000 lb 5th wheel, no squat, rides great on most surfaces and handles curves with little effort. The frosting on the cake is the fact that they require no maintenance! I will never buy another set of air bags again! 516664

Have not towed our fifth wheel with these installed yet which was the main reason for the purchase. Towed a dump trailer and the added stability was definitely noted. With my truck loaded as usual with several hundreds of pounds of gear (two tool boxes, wood dunnage for leveling camper, ladder, B&W Companion fifth wheel hitch/Turnover ball, floor jack, tire inflator, jumper cables, screw gun kit, two traffic cones, brooms, squeegee - you get the idea!) the Timbrens are in contact with the bumper bars on the axle setup. Was hoping that the springs would not be in contact during normal daily driving but the stiffening of the ride is more than tolerable. I did not install the additional spacers as I could tell it would just add more weight to the Timbrens when loaded for daily driving. I'm sure if my truck bed was truly empty I would be off of the Timbrens. As for the five star rating without using these for the primary purpose I must say that is all on etrailer. They were great to deal with, answered a question I had very well and the shipping was extremely fast. 421213

I have installed and used the Timbrens on my 2015 F350 dually with my 5th wheel Keystone Fusion RV for a year now. i have to say that the Timrens are not only easy to install but make the ride of my truck excellent not only on the highway but back roads as well that includes very twisty turns. Timbrens keep my truck level and i don't have to ever worry about airbag air pressure. i have owned airbags before and never again will i ever buy or use them. When you don't have a load in the bed or your RV hooked up the Timbrens ride above then axles.. Best investment for towing period! 264475

Bought the Timbren Susp. System for a 2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty used to pull a 16,000# fifth wheel trailer. Had this on my former 2012 Ford F-250 Super Duty used to pull a 12,000# fifth wheel and the Timbren Susp. System kept the rear from sagging when the trailer was loaded. Keeping the truck level really made the truck more stable and enjoyable to drive when pulling the fifth wheel. 212589

Solid Product! Yeah it's a stiffer ride when loaded But that's the sacrifice made to have more control of the haul while underway. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting to stay more level with a heavy boat/trailer setup as in my case. Not that install is hard but removal of spare tire before install, may have helped with space if you don't have a lift. 511931

Product was easy to install, 1/2 hr taking my time. Used a open end wrench and floor jack. My 2018 F350 Super Duty Super Cab 4wd no longer plunges over bumps, it has lost all its rear end sway on turning, carries my load much smoother ( loaded all the time ). Even with the load I always carry, the vehicle sits 1” higher in the rear. Prior to the install I was constantly hitting the rubber stops on my factory overload springs. 520123

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

I installed these on my 2012 Ford F250 because I have two friends who have them on their trucks and they pull a travel trailer and a fifth wheel camper. I was impressed with the difference it made compared to my truck and camper Parked next to theirs'. I am mechanic and I see no reason why anyone would have trouble installing these them selves. Clean off the Nut and end of bolts before trying to loosen. Spray some WD-40 on the threads. Put on some gloves and use a 15mm wrench to loosen factory nut. Be sure to hold up on the factory bump stop because it has a line up pin that keeps it from turning as you loosen the nut. The driver side is a little more aggravating to get to because of wiring harness but there's plenty of room to use a wrench first then a 3/8" drive rachet and short extension with a good 6point 15mm standard depth socket will speed up removal. Then installing the new parts is a breeze. Just follow directions or etrailer videos on YouTube. Took longer to remove factory bump stomps than to install new ones. Maybe 45 mins total on original ones maybe. Then after preassembly of new ones, it took maybe 20 mins to install completely. Give yourself 1:30 hrs of time and enjoy your truck not sagging around town when loaded. 654107

Working great. I had read reviews about them being too stiff whem you aren't pulling a trailer, but it seems like they softened up a bit after first putting them on. I felt a few hard jolts going over speed bumps and such the first few days, but now I don't notice them at all when I don't have a trailer attached. They are still improving the ride with a heavy trailer. I'd give 5 stars but my mechanic neighbor had to help me install them because there was something wrong with the bolts that came in the package. It was a year ago and I can't remember the details. Without him I think I could have returned them and gotten a fix and installed them by myself. It's a very simple install when all the parts are in good shape. 549083

got the product when stated , went on simple enough but used google to really see how things went together. Timbren doesn't give very good instructions with their product wish they would put diagram so as to be able to see how brackets go, but happy so far haven't put load on the truck yet that's coming up with a trip in august with my 30ft camper and truck loaded for trip guess will come back and let you know how the product works after the trip , but etrailer delivered when they said they would thanks will keep you in mind for future purchases. 544811

These do really well for supporting a full load or trailer attached. But if unloaded the will create whiplash if you go over a speed bump or anything that creates the axle to spring up and hit them. 611025

I had bought these timbrens and the weight safe hitch with the 8” drop from etrailer. I was quite please by both products. Installation of the timbrens was very easy, only took 30-40 minutes to change out bump stops in my garage.I hauled a Uhaul trailer with a Jeep over 300 miles, with no issues. The timbrens worked great, no issues with the rife. And I really like the weight safe hitch. I recommend checking out these two products from etrailer. Thanks etrailer. 642864

My vehicle is a 2002 Tahoe and there was a fair amount of rust to deal with, making the installation more difficult than the video shows. The ride is somewhat bouncy, not sure they are seated completely but they do help with the sagging when I hookup the trailer. 92933

The instructions that are included are very vague, the web site video is alot clearer on the instalation. The SES was however easy to assemble and install and only took about an hour from start to finish. After completing the install I hooked back to my camper and went from a 3-4 inch drop to .75 inch drop. This product works exactly as it is advertised to do. I can wait to get it on the raod now. 48610

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

This product has performed exactly as advertised. We pull a fifth wheel rv with a hitch weight of 2300 pounds. After adding the Timbren Rear Suspension System to our Ford F-250, our truck sits perfectly level when hooked up. We feel that it was a much more cost effective way to keep our truck level as opposed to installing an air bag system. 344559

Comments

I still like the suspension product that I purchased from Timbren. It helps keep my vehicle level when we tow our 12,500 lbs fifth wheel RV with a hitch weight of about 2400 lbs, although when I purchased the product we were towing a lighter model. I have been thinking about ordering the heavier duty model you offer to help off set the increase in weight of our new trailer.

Installed on a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country over 2 years ago. They work as promised. I have hit some tough spots on the road fully loaded and the back never bottomed out. They stabilize the rear and make the overall ride quality better, especially under load. 612756

I installed these on my 2015 Navion motorhome. It was very easy and only took about an hour. They did more than I expected. The ride is much better and a small shimmy that could be felt in the steering wheel at about 65 is gone. I would recommend these for all MB motorhomes. 460088

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

Just finished installing Timbren's in the rear of my Ford E-450 motorhome. The installation was very easy. The hardest part was lifting up the motorhome so the rear tires were off the ground. I always install Timbren's on all my pickup trucks, and have always been extremely happy with them, so when I bought a motorhome, that was one of the first things I did. Because my motorhome came from the manufacturer with helper springs which increased the height or clearance, the Timbren's were not in constant contact, so I purchased and install a 1" spacer (part number A25723-90AH00). Now the Timbren's are in constant contact and will maintain the correct height and not sag under load. I love Timbrens! 643600

Review from a similar Timbren Aeon Spring System in Vehicle Suspension

In my opinion these were a complete waste of money. I could discern no difference between them and the stock bumpers. Unfortunately it was a number of weeks after I installed them that I actually hauled our gooseneck horse trailer. My mistake for not immediately testing them after installation. I had the the Ride Rite system from Firestone on my previous Ford and was very pleased with that product. After reading reviews for the Timbrens I thought I could save some money by going that route. Big mistake on my part, I would never recommend this product instead I would steer anyone needing trailering suspension parts to buy the Ride Rite system. When finances allow I will be removing the Timbrens, throwing them in a dumpster and purchasing the air bag system. Overall I have been very pleased with Etrailer and will order from them in the future. 518512

2012 Ford F-250, no overload springs. Loaded 24,000 lbs on a 32' gooseneck. Pickup would squat too far. Installed Timbrem rear suspension enhancement and pickup runs almost level and rides great!! All I needed to handle the load. Great product!! Would recommend to anyone looking for overload springs. Installed in 30 minutes!! 165636

Came just as advertised. Waiting to install. As an aside: You might want to make sure all box sides are securely taped as the USPO delivered the box with the un-taped side completely pulled away from the box and the suspension parts were pushing out of the box. 504944

Do you have a question about this Vehicle Suspension?

  • Comparison of Jounce-Style or Air Bag Suspension Enhancement
  • Jounce-style helper springs are easier to install than air bags since they're less parts involved. Also, once they are installed you basically leave them alone. Air bags need to have the air pressure monitored and changed according to the load that's being carrier. The jounce-style will not impact the ride quality unless there is load present. The benefit of the air bags is that you can adjust them to your liking when you need to. If the weight in your truck varies on a regular basis...

  • Which Timbren Kit HD or Lighter Duty for 2016 Ford F-350 That Hauls Campers Frequently
  • The difference in harshness between the Timbren kits part # TFR350SDF and # TFRTT350F would be very noticeable. Especially when unloaded. Your truck is already going to have a rough ride as that is the nature of 1 ton trucks but the 12k Timbren kit will make for a very harsh ride when unloaded. I really wouldn't recommend that unless the truck is going to be loaded to near it's max capacity most of the time it will be on the road. For what you are looking to do I would go with the lower...
