This kit works, but not in the configuration delivered. If you purchase this, be prepared to find an alternate method to mount the lights. You will likely need to modify the cargo carrier to make this work. The lights are sealed units that are normally flush mounted on larger trailers. Mounts have been added with self-tapping screws that easily strip out of the housing and the mounts fall off the lights. The screws in the kit were smaller in diameter than the holes in the mounts, both front and back, making them useless. I tried attaching the lights using zip ties and just the mount on the light portion, but that failed when the mount screws stripped out of the lights. I did not have the issue with the wiring being too short like other reviewers. My wiring was actually a little too long. To actually install this kit reliably, here what you need: - Silicone - Super Glue - Screwdriver (Flat or Phillips Depending on Screw Choice) - Wire Cutters (To Cut the Ends off of Anchors) - 9/32" Drill Bit - 4x #6x1.5" Machine Screw - 4x #6x0.75" Anchors How I installed mine: 1. Remove the plastic bracket supplied with the light. Fill the holes with silicone so that the lights are sealed again. Check in a couple minutes to ensure that the silicone didn't drip through. Add more as needed until the hole is filled. 2. Trim the ends off of your anchors so that they fit in the two plastic circles on the back of the lights. Just a little bit will do. Test fit them to make sure they go all the way in. Once you're sure they fit, super glue just the bevel at the top to the light. This is to prevent them from turning in the hole because the plastic on the light is really smooth. 3. Drill two 9/32" holes in the rear upright bars of the carrier. Make the holes 1/4" from the edge so you can still connect the wiring. Space the holes at 2 5/16". The holes need to go through the front and back of the uprights. 4. Put the screws through the back holes pointing outwards. Once the super glue has dried, screw the screws into the anchors. 5. Connect the wiring per the supplied instructions. 419086

Ask the Experts about this Optronics Trailer Lights

  • How To Install LED Trailer License-Plate Light LPL55CB
You can wire a license plate light like part # LPL55CB without running wiring up to the front of the trailer. You simply attach the white wire with the ring terminal to a clean, bare metal surface like the trailer frame, and then attach the black wire to the running light wire that leads to the tail light. You can attach the black wire to the trailer tail light circuit (usually a brown wire). If you are unsure which wire the tail light circuit is, an easy way to check is to attach...

  • How to Wire Illuminated License Plate Holder to Trailer Connector
To wire an illuminated license plate holder such as the Optronics LED # LPL55CB, you can simply splice into the running light circuit and ground wire from the trailer connector. I recommend using the 2 Wire Loop # 9651P to make these connections. This will allow for a quick and easy disconnect when you are not using the cargo carrier/rack on your trailer hitch. I have attached a couple of short video demonstrations on these products for you to check out.

  • Recommended Trailer License Plate Mount With Light
The LED Trailer License-Plate Light w/ Mounting Bracket, 2 Wire, 5 Diode - Clear # LPL55CB is made of a molded plastic. If you are interested in a metal bracket I recommend the Peterson License Plate Light with Bracket # PM436B which has an incandescent bulb. You alternatively use the can use the metal mount # LP20SB along with the LED Heavy Duty Trailer License Plate Light, Ear Mount, 5 Diode - Chrome Plated # LPL41CB.

  • How to Wire the LED Trailer License-Plate Light # LPL55CB
You will need to use a quick splice, item # SWC502905-1, and splice the black wire from the LED Trailer License-Plate Light, item # LPL55CB, into the tail light wire on your trailer. The tail light wire is normally the brown wire, but you should use a circuit tester, item # 40376 if needed, to be sure you are splicing into the correct wire. You will then need to attach the white wire to ground, usually the trailer frame or the white wire coming from the trailer connector. Once wired...

  • License Plate Holder and Light for Use on Ramped Utility Trailer
You can add a license plate holder and light to your ramped utility trailer either with a single item such as # LPL55CB or # PM436B, or you can choose separate plate holders and lights to let you choose the designs you most prefer, such as plate holder part # CR30830 and light part # LPL12CKM2B. It may be easiest to use one product; my choice would be # LPL55CB since its LED light uses much less power than a typical bulb light (only about one-tenth as much power). You will make a...

  • Installing 2-Wire Lighted License Plate Bracket on Trailer
When wiring a 2-wire license plate bracket, such as the Optronics LED # LPL55CB, you are correct that the white wire will be for ground and the black wire is used for the running lights. The white wire from the bracket should be attached to a clean, bare metal surface on the trailer frame for a secure ground. As you mentioned, the brown wire on your trailer is most likely the correct wire to tap into for the black wire on the bracket, but you will want to verify this by testing the...

  • Recommended License Plate Brackets For Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier
We do have license plate brackets that can be mounted on a carrier. If you are looking for a bracket with an LED light I recommend part # LPL55CB. For a lighted bracket with a replaceable incandescent bulb I recommend part # LP55CB. To install either of these lights the black wire would need to tap into the running light circuit of your vehicle and the white wire would need to get grounded. The best way to wire this is to use a harness like part # HM48035. If you don't want to install...

  • Recommended License Plate Light for Rola Cargo Carrier # 59502

If you already happen to have a license plate bracket and just need the light then I would recommend the LED # LPL41CB. LEDs will last longer and draw less amperage than traditional incandescent lights. I have linked the mentioned products and an installation video for your convenience.

  • Jumper Ground Wire for Installing Lion LA080V2 Number Plate Lamp for Box Trailer
Any time trailer lighting uses the mounting surface for ground you can run into issues if there is not a consistent reliable ground connection due to paint, primer or corrosion. Aluminum trailers and trailers with folding tongues can also have this issue. Using a ground jumper wire is a great fix. You can connect the wire to one of the light's mounting screws and route it to a suitable grounding point on the trailer frame, or all the way back to the main wiring harness ground if you prefer. • Troubleshooting Weak Ground On Boat Trailer Where all Grounds Run to Frame
Normally if the 4-way on the trailer's wiring has it's ground wire attached to a clean part of the trailer frame you can then run all of the light assemblies grounds to the trailer frame and everything will be fine. Now if the trailer has an aluminum frame it would not be a good enough conductor for this to work and you'd have to run jumper wires from each light's ground to the ground of the harness. So I'd first try improving the main ground wire of the 4-way on the trailer frame and if...
